Platinum rallies on world markets

Platinum Living Events presented a family day at the Segorong Secondary School grounds in Praktiseer last week Saturday to welcome spring. The Bison Falls Spur mascot proved to be equally as popular as the jumping castles. Part of the fun and games during the day were prizes sponsored by Bison Falls as well as face painting and water games.

Good news for local platinum producers is that the price on world markets for the metal rose the most in four months and traded for $1102.70 per troy ounce in New York on Tuesday. Just before going to press yesterday (Thursday) the spot price of platinum was $1094.80 per troy ounce. Analysts says the spike in the platinum as well as palladium prices are linked to a weaker US dollar and the fact that platinum producers and labour unions in South Africa had failed to reach a wage agreement, stirring fears of less production and availability of the metal on world markets. Reports surfaced that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) will break off wage talks after they failed to reach an agreement with employers after more than a month of negotiations. South Africa accounts for more than 70% of global platinum output. Major players in the platinum market, Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin together account for 60% of global platinum output. Few observers expect platinum to keep rising. "The labor side is leaning toward a more realistic path, so even if they go on strike, it may not last long," said Eijiro Nagao, head of commodities trading at Sumitomo Corp. Back in 2014, when South African mine workers went on a fivemonth strike, platinum price gains were limited, and mining companies suffered a major blow to earnings. Year to date platinum is up 24.5% and palladium's price has risen by more than 22%. AMCU is demanding pay hikes of more than 50 percent for its lowest paid members, and a 15 percent hike for its higher paid members. At South Africa's platinum mines, worker pay make up almost half of mining companies' operating costs and output is also frequently affected by stoppages over safety. Analysts also pointed out that while the South African rand stays weak against the US dollar the higher price will benefit local mines, but as soon as the local currency firms up, gains will be less, impacting on local production costs. Platinum and palladium prices tend to be volatile thanks to the highly concentrated supply environment. Together Russia and South Africa control between some 80% of the world’s supply of PGMs (South Africa on its own produces 80% of the world's rhodium). The structure of supply has not altered in any substantial way since the 1970s when platinum and later palladium came to the fore as an important part of the world’s automobile industry.

Two Rivers PlaƟnum invests in Enterprise Development
T
wo Rivers PlaƟnum’s inspiring vision for private sector to play a meaningful role in the sustainability and growth of local economy, parƟcularly within its core communiƟes located in the Steelpoort area, is now taking shape. The unemployment of youth in the area, especially among the mining communiƟes, is high. It is clear that the mining operaƟons cannot address this challenge alone. To address the challenge, Two Rivers PlaƟnum mine, an African Rainbow Mineral operated company, through its Enterprise Development (ED) iniƟaƟve have commiƩed to incubate 30 local businesses. The steady increase of the youth populaƟon in the area where the mine is operaƟng is not being matched by an increase in job opportuniƟes. There is a large discrepancy between what the youth are being taught and what employers expect them to know. These gaps can be narrowed through a coordinated effort aimed at developing and supporƟng the local entrepreneurs. It’s an inspiring vision for business
to play a real role in the sustainability and growth in the country’s economy. Two Rivers have acknowledged the need for creaƟon of jobs through the development of small medium and macro enterprises in the area where it operates. “The B-BBEE Amendments are providing corporate South Africa with an ideal opportunity to construct sustainable businesses in the mining communiƟes and to play a lead role in the socio-economic transformaƟon of the country. Two Rivers is a proponent of this noƟon and we want to contribute by passing on knowledge, experience business support”. This will help us realize our transformaƟon objecƟve of integraƟng the upcoming local businesses into our procurement value-chain”, said JJ Joubert, the Business Leader of Two Rivers PlaƟnum. Two Rivers have thus far succeeded in establishing small businesses from the area. They have already provided start-ups with essenƟal tools and resources to enƟƟes such as Bokang Pebetse (Pty) Limited, Sekgeu ConstrucƟon, etc. which were then used for their development, survival and business success. In addiƟon the mine also provides valuable support in the form of mentorship through a fully-fletched incubaƟon programme. Research have shown that 80% of South Africa’s start-ups fail in the first three years and this is largely aƩributed to a lack of support. However, the survival rate of a start-up is increased by the incubaƟon process, which assists small businesses in becoming financially viable.
