Minerals Council declares national day of safety and health in mining

Johannesburg - Following a meeting of the Board of the Minerals Council South Africa, the Board has advised that it is deeply disappointed, concerned and saddened by the increase in fatalities experienced in the mining industry this year, and in 2017. In addition to the active steps being taken by the Minerals Council and its members to address these recent events, and to get the industry’s quest for Zero Harm back on track, the Minerals Council will lead a national campaign of Safety & Health Days in Mining 2018, to be launched in mid-August. While arrangements for each member company’s Safety & Health Day are still being finalised, Minerals Council President, Mxolisi Mgojo, said: “This day will mark both the remembrance of those whose lives have been lost in mining, and a renewed and absolute commitment by all member companies to safety and health of employees as the primary objective of every company.

On the opening day of the Career Expo the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Maudu Johannes Phokane visited the Samancor Eastern Chrome tents.
amancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) participated in the Eastern Limb HRD Career Expo for Grade 11 learners last week. This annual expo shifted the focus to Grade 11 learners this year, to assist them with not only possible career opportunities, but also bursaries, apprenticeships and learnership opportunities they can apply for. Approximately 6 000 learners visited the Career Expo that ran from 31 July to 3 August 2018. Every mine represented at the event, ensured that the schools within their footprint of operation had an opportunity to visit the expo. Transport was provided to make it easy for them to attend. Samancor ECM has shown their commitment towards the improvement of education and development within the area through current and previous SLP projects. Millions of rands have been invested in improving and creating new infrastructure at schools in the area. The Company sees education as a way in which everyone can improve their own future. By investing in school infrasturcture and development they contribute towards creating better equipped leaders and possible employees for the future. Samancor ECM’s exhibition included the full spectrum within the company, including Human Resources, Finance, SHEQ, Mining, Ventilation, Rock Engineering, Engineering, Diesel Mechanic and other artisan careers,

Metallurgy and many more. Each station was manned by employees working in the specific fields on display. They were able to not only provide learners with background on what their careers are about, but also answer any questions about subjects needed for further studies towards obtaining a qualification. Learners were kept engaged with inter-active games and demonstrations related to the career areas on show. Samancor ECM is also committed towards providing assistance in terms of bursaries and apprenticeships. The learners received information explaining the opportunities available and the requirements needed to apply. Learners made the best of their time at the event, collecting information and asking questions. Each received a boerewors roll and a goodie bag as well. During the opening of the event the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) Mayor, Cllr. Maudu Johannes Phokane emphasised the need for strong ties between government and the public sector. He added that events such as the Career Expo are testimony to the mines’ commitment towards improving education and creating opportunities in the area. He had a message to parents and learners to also take responsibility and make use of the opportunities and not contribute towards instability in the area through enhancing their education on every level. Phokane and other dignitaries enjoyed a walk-through to also experience what learners are being exposed to.

Bauba concludes ore financing, offtake agreement Johannesburg - Bauba Platinum Limited (Bauba; JSE: BAU) announced this week that it has concluded a financing and offtake agreement for run of mine (ROM) chrome ore that includes a US$5 million prepayment earmarked for future growth. The financing and offtake agreement, for 240 000 tonnes (t) of chrome ore to be sold at an anticipated 20 000tpm from Bauba’s Moeijelijk Mine in the Burgersfort area (near Moroke / Mecklenburg), is with Gerald Metals S.A. (Gerald) and Pelagic Resources Pty Ltd (Pelagic Resources). The prepayment will help to fund Bauba’s growth enhancement projects at Moeijelijk and new acquisitions, says CEO Nick van der Hoven. Key at Moeijelijk is the ramp-up of underground production to 30 000tpm while, in terms of possible new acquisitions, van der Hoven says the company is targeting operating chrome and other mines, both in South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent. The agreement with US-based Gerald and SA-based Pelagic Resources includes a reduction factor on ROM chrome ore tonnage obligations, once Bauba starts producing chrome concentrate from Moeijelijk’s new wash plant. The new plant will process ROM chrome ore to produce lump and then foundry, chemical and metallurgical grade concentrates. The sale of these into the international market for them, which is less volatile than that for ROM chrome ore, will diversify the company’s revenue stream and enhance profit margins, says van der Hoven. Pelagic Resources – which specialises in international finance, marketing and supply chain solutions for the global trade of mineral ores and alloys – has participated in the marketing of Bauba’s chrome ore production for the past 18 months Gerald is a leading private global commodity trading company with approximately US$3 billion in assets and US$10 billion in revenue. Bauba is its first entry into the chrome ore market. With Pelagic Resources, it has successfully placed and sold the miner’s monthly ROM chrome ore production on a spot basis during the past two quarters.

JSE-listed Bauba operates the Moeijelijk chrome mine, close to Tjibeng. The mine provides employment to more than 400 people, most of whom live in Tjibeng.Bauba covered half the cost of the donation. Learners benefit from donations On 3 August 2018 the learners of Leolo Technical High School in Praktiseer attended an award giving ceremony in celebration of what would have been Mandela’s 100th birthday year. The event was attended by learners, parents, educators, SGB members and Mr Selepe Malope who was deployed from the mayor’s office in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality to give a speech on behalf of the Mayor. 20 Learners received a full set of school uniforms, sanitary pads and toilet rolls. These were collected through the school fundraising committee led by Mr Osilias Ndala Mosoma. This committee approaches the business community to assist in building workshops, laboratories and studios following the declaration of the school as a technical one. Steelies hosts annual Grade R open day Steelpoort Academy hosted their annual Grade R open day on 27 July. Prospective learners were brought to the school by their learners to get a taste of school and for them to apply to be registered for the 2019 school year. While parents took care of official business the children were kept busy decorating their own cookies and playing ball or colouring pictures.

Caring for communities
Pick n Pay Steelpoort is actively involved in the communities surrounding Steelpoort during the year, but they also contribute their bit on Mandela Day every year. This year during July they changed lives at Legapana Primary School in Longtill. They installed 3 gas stoves and fixed up the kitchen in which meals are prepared every day. Nearby secondary schools also attended the official event at which the kitchen donation was officially given. These learners received sanitary pads and roll-on deodorants. Pick n Pay Steelpoort also sponsored the catering for the dignitaries at the official event. At Kgahlanong High School 675 sanitary pads were distributed. Playing mini-cricket Last week Saturday Laerskool Burgersfort hosted a mini-cricket event. Laerskool Ohrigstad and Laerskool Drakensig attended the friendly games where children learn more about cricket and develop their batting and fielding skills in a minature setting. SPORT Zacharia Lenareng the 2018 champions The Thomas Madigage Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Pulana Maroga Soccer League came to an end during the last weekend of July. This exciting tournament saw a third place playoff match between Maroga Tearing Lions FC and Mooihoek Real Touch FC. The game ended 2 all and Tearing Lions beat Real
Touch FC 5-4 on penalties. The final was between Batau FC and Zacharia Lenareng FC. the game started at a fast pace, with both teams attacking. On the 25th minute Lenareng FC scored a goal through Frank Ngele. At half time the score was still 1-0 in favour of Lenareng FC. After the break, Lenareng continued to attack Batau at all angles but failed to finish up. In the 55th minute Benny Tjie of Batau FC was send off after playing a dangerous tackle on Skoonduur of Lenareng FC. Batau managed to regroup and equalized through Doctor Ngele‘s goal. The match ended 1-1. Lenareng overpowered Batau 9-8 on penalties. Pulana Maroga Soccer League congratulated Lenareng FC as the 2018 champions of the Thomas Madigage Soccer Tournament. Laerskool Ohrigstad samel geld in op die golfbaan Laerskool Ohrigstad het verlede Vrydag hul jaarlikse golfdag by die Lydenburg Golf Klub gehou. Die dag is goed ondersteun deur besighede en persone wat gespeel en putjies geborg het.
Die span onderwysers, ouers, beheerliggaam- en gemeenskapsondersteuners het hard gewerk om van die dag ‘n sukses te maak. Die skool is baie afhanklik van sulke dae en projekte om geld in te samel. Elkeen wat ‘n wat ‘n bydrae gelewer het en gehelp het om van die dag ‘n sukses te maak, is bedank.
