11 FEBRUARY 2011

Laerskool Burgersfort is very busy with the annual athletics meetings, and last weekend was no exception, when they participated at Laerskool Drakensig at Hoedspruit. On their way back the kids did not go straight home, ut had an important stop to make. The prefects at the school are running a project at the school to collect food and clothing for learners who are less furtunate. With the athletes in their vehicle were 17 bags of old, but still serviceable clothing and boxes of tinned foodstuff to donate towards a worthy cause. The athletes stopped at the Sculpture Garden and Rock Face Art on the way to the Echo Caves where they handed the food and clothes to pastor Jeff and Tembi (bottom photograph), who are also guides at the sculpture garden. The learners not only handed over the school’s donation, they also listened attentively to the pastor and the Bible stories he told them. The pastor is running a community project in the area and most of his income is also donated towards the betterment of the light of the needy in the area. Electricity projects progressing well Joy was the order of the day when more than 1000 families from "Dark City" in Praktiseer finally had electricity switched this month. Between October last year and this month 1293 households in Bokome village, Ditenseng, Kalkfontein, Tswenyane and Lepelle, all part of the Greater Tubatse municipality received electricity connections. The municipality’s Tehnical Service Director, Bruce Mohlaba, told newspapers the conditions under which the villagers lived, forced the local

government to provide the villagers with electricity to change their lives for the better. "School-going children and workers were the most vulnerable since they were forced to bath in cold water," Mohlaba said. Meanwhile, a number ofther electrification projects are still in progress, such as the one at Maepa Village between Burgersfort and Ohrigstad, where electricity will probably be swithced on towards the end of this month.

Rabies vaccination campaign next week

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) is actively partnering with their service providers to assist with projects in the local communities. In January ECM normally receives quite a few requests by schools to assist with the clearing of their school grounds. This year ECM received requests from Makgekantshe Primary School, Mangabane Primary School and Dithamaga Primary School. Through partnering with their service providers, Motlokwa agreed to clear 2 grounds at Mangabane (bottom), One for athletics and one for soccer. Emake Civils agreed to clear the grounds for both Makgekantshe (top) and Dithamaga Primary Schools.

The Animal Health Division of the Department of Agriculture in Tubatse (Praktiseer), is again embarking on a rabies vaccination campaign in the municipality for dogs and cats. The campaign starts in Burgersfort at the OK Mini Market on 15 February. Personnel will be available in the parking lot from 08:00 till 17:0, as well as the next day, 16 February, during the same time. On 16 February vaccinations will also be done at the gate at Motaganeng between 08:00 and 16:00. On 17 February a team will administer vaccinations in Steelpoort next to Pep Stores form 08:00 till 17:00, while vaccinations at Tubatse Residence will be done on 22 February at the tuck shop between 08:00 and 17:00. Ohrigstad will be visited on 23 February and residents must take their animals to the team next to the Police Station. The hours are form 08:00 till 17:00. On 24 February the vaccination team will be available at the gate at Winterveld Village from 08:00 till 17:00. The Animal health Division says residents must remember that the vaccinations are free of charge and important to prevent a possible rabies outbreak in the area. Residents must also remember to bring their pets’ vaccination records with if they have any. Enquiries can be directed to the programme coordinators, Mr M A Muroa at 013 216 1093 / 082 767 9736 or Dr M F Makgamatha at 013 216 1093 / 072 553 7043.

11 FEBRUARY 2011

To make use of religious President Jacob Zuma used heaven and hell in an expression of what the result of an ANC vote or an opposition vote will lead to in the forthcoming local government elections. Zuma likened that voting for the ANC will be like choosing heaven while voting for the opposition will be like voting for the devil. This happened at a political rally in the Eastern Cape last weekend . Since then the ANC has been defending the statement and opposition parties, as well as church leaders have been condemning the remarks, saying Zuma should apologise. According to the ANC’s spokeman Mr Jackson Mthembu the remarks were “figurative and metaphoric”. He said: “...we are in agreement with the President that not voting for the ANC is tantamount to throwing your vote in burning hell”. Zuma told voters that card carrying members of the ANC will be blessed because they will be let through to heaven. He also referred to the ANC’s track record, history and policies as the goodness of heaven. Mtembu during the week said that jealousy is driving other parties and organisations to complain about the remarks because they are “jealous for not having thought of the expression themselves”. He also said that South Africans understand Zuma’s figurative expressions and the context in which it was used. The DA said that Zuma’s words were offensive to ordinary citizens. They feel that his remarks will create division in South African communities and is trying to mobilise along religious lines. “Indeed, this is an act of shameless political and religious blackmail - the sort of political skulduggery that may be the norm in autocracies, but that should be anathema to our constitutional democracy. Mr Zuma should apologise unreservedly for these remarks” the DA said. The SA Council of Churches also urgently requested to speak to Zuma this week to discuss the words he used. The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) said that they considered Zuma’s statements as blasphemous. Reverend Theunis Botha, leader of the CDP said that Zuma is “coercing people into voting for the ANC” and that this tendency to use religion as an instrument of intimidation “borders on blasphemy”. We asked readers how they understand Zuma’s words, what they think about it and whether they feel that the issue is being blown out of proportion?

Mr Nerious Moloko said: “It is not a political matter. I don’t think it is right to speak like that. We should not relate God to politics. As a politician you should respect God and although you may visit churches, you should not converse your party and promote it in church”.

Mr Johannes Moagi said: “I think the President is being misinterpreted. I don’t think he can speak like he is mad about these things. I think it was just a joke he made”.

Ms Princess Kgoete said: “I think it is smooth, it is okay to talk like that”. Ms Magdeline Phala said: “No, they can’t talk like that. They can’t equate politics to heaven. Myself, I am a Christian and the only way to heaven is to believe in God”.

Ms Rosina Kgwete and Ms Phuti Selepe said: “We agree with the church and opposition. You can’t compare the party to heaven. The Bible says heaven is a place of peace and we think that in heaven you will not lack anything. Now we don’t have water or electricity. People are still struggling to get employment”.

Mnr Whitey Ludick sê: “Almal het vir die ANC gestem en Suid Afrika is besig om die hel in te gaan. Weet Zuma ooit waar is die hemel?”

Mr Tshepo Mashile said: “I don’t think it is okay to speak like Zuma did because it offends the nature of the Holy Word. It critisizes other parties and all parties want to help people. Calling them the devil/hell is offensive”.

Above: Mr Abel Tshukudu said: “They must not talk about God like that. Politicians and God are not the same”.

Maatlopo United still on the right track Maatlopo United collected three points away from home last weekend. They beat Ngwaabe City Motors 3-1 in an exciting match. The first goal was scored by Collen Mphoka in the 17th minute of the game. Thapelo Moropane increased the lead in the 33rd minute to make the score 2-0. The hosts fought back and the halftime score stood at 2-1. During the second half of the game, the hosts tried to equalise but Maatlopo’s defence by Taripo Nkosi was excellent and denied them any opportunities. This did not deter Ngwaabe City Motors. They pushed forward, but Maatlopo

counter attacked and this gave Collen Mphoka the chance to make the score 3-1 in the 56th minute. On Sunday 6 February the team was supposed to play agains IX Experience from Mooihoek, but due to reasons beyond the team’s control, the game did not take place. This week Maatlopo will host King Born from Dennilton at Ntoampe Stadium. Instead of 12 February this game will take place on 13 February.
