In with the new at GTM The drama around the recalling of Greater Tubatse Municipality’s mayor, Councillor Nkosi Josias Mahlake, came to a head this week on Tuesday during a council meeting in Burgersfort where his resignation was announced and his predecessor, Councillor Ralepane Mamekoa was elected to complete the current mayoral term. Councillor Mamekoa also served as a representative at the Sekhukhune District Municipality since the last local government elections. Mayor Mamekoa’s election was widely welcomed and the packed public gallery erupted with jubilation at his election. This was however not the end. The Council’s Executive Committee was also reshuffled after a number of resignations from the committee and all new members were sworn in during the Council meeting. After the meeting a joint media briefing were held by the outgoing mayor and the new incumbent of the position. Former mayor Mahlake thanked his political party for the opportunity he had during the past years and everybody he worked with for their cooperation. He said he will remain an ANC councillor in the council and that he will be prepared to serve in any role or position the party seems fit. Mayor Mamekoa in his address to the media committed himself, the Executive Committee and the Council to fulfill the mandate they received, saying that the IDP (Integrated Development Plan) will remain the guideline and that residents of the municipality must realize that service delivery and any efforts to it, does not stop, it remains an ongoing process. In the same breath he stated that the local government have no problem with service delivery protests, as long as it takes place within the framework of established guidelines and the law. He also said people should realize that sometimes people like mayors have to attend to other commitments and that representatives may be used to receive memorandums etc.

Did you know that high blood pressure can develop over years with nearly no symptoms?
Emmanuel Manngo is your friendly pharmacist at Burgersfort Pharmacy.
High blood pressure is a very common condition. It happens when the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease. It is however easy to detect and working with your doctor and pharmacist you can keep it under control. Most people show no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems such as stroke and heart disease. There are two types of high blood pressure. The one is without an identifiable cause and develops over many years. This is called Primary or Essential high blood pressure. The second type is called Secondary Hypertention and is usually caused by some underlying conduction such as kidney problems, thyroid problems or some types of medication. It is recommended that you have your blood pressure checked regularly. You can have this done at all Kalapeng Pharmacies. Your pharmacist will refer you to your doctor should he or she detect a problem with your blood pressure.

Dwarsrivier Mine Dwarsrivier mine helps develop entrepreneurs Dwarsrivier Mine, Greater Tubatse Municipality and the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) last week hosted a graduation ceremony for members of the Incubates Programme in the area. The function took place at Jorge’s Resort on Thursday, 3 July 2014. The programme aims to enable small businesses in the area to operate efficiently with a good business foundation. The entrepreneurs are empowered to market and run their businesses according to good business practice. They are skilled to make use of opportunities in the market especially for emerging business ventures. On Thursday the graduating incubates not only received words of encouragement, but also a certificate for their completion of the programme. Dwarsrivier Mine showed its commitment towards developing and investing in small business ventures in the area through donating computers, printers and software to the graduates to help kick-start their various business ventures. Mr Remember Mmbengwa, SD Manager from
Graduating incubates received certificates recognising their completion of the programme. They also received a donation from Dwarsrivier Mine to kick-start their business.
Dwarsrivier Mine told them that the mine believes in developing and creating business opportunities for small businesses in the area, but that they also expect a high standard from these entrepreneurs’ companies. He encouraged them to make sure they are registered on the relevant databases and keep themselves informed to maximise their chances of doing business with large companies. Dwarsrivier Mine recently launched the SMME Portal website in conjuction with Samancor Eastern Chrome and Two Rivers Platinum Mine – SMME business ventures can register on this portal website for free and have access to tender and other information related to the operations and procurement of these companies. Different speakers took to the floor during the day’s programme, but the message was clear that although business is tough, hard work, dedication and delivering the best possible service will help these incubates make their mark in the business world. The recipients of Dwarsrivier’s donation thanked the mine for their assistance, knowing they’ll need this technology to run a professional venture.

NEWS
The controversy surrounding SABC’s On Tuesday this week controversial SABC acting chief operations officer (COO), Hlaudi Motsoeneng was permanently appointed. His appointment surprised the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela who released a report in February that recommended he be replaced. Her report with the title, “When Governance and Ethics Fail” found that his appointment is irregular. She found that he misrepresented his qualifications – that he passed matric, and that he increased his salary from R1.5 million a year to R2.4 million in one year. One of the latest controversies surrounding Motsoeneng is his call for journalists to have licences to practice like the medical and law professions. He has been quoted as saying: “You know when you are a journalist, you are a professional. If you don’t have ethics and principles and you mislead on your reporting, like lawyers…if you commit any mistake, they take your licence”. Motsoeneng’s appointment was announced by Communications Minister Faith Muthambi. She told the media that she followed the recommendation she received from the SABC’s board. The SABC’s board has been given until 17 August to respond to the Public Protector’s report. Political parties reacted with shock at the appointment as well as his statement that journalists should have licences. EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said: “Those were damning findings by the Public Protector. A person admitted to lying about his qualifications. When is Mr Hlaudi being fired? I don’t even think he must be here”. The DA reacted by saying that Motsoeneng’s permanent appointment meant that he will be free to continue his “reign of terror” at the SABC. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about the whole issue.
Mr Elvis Setladi said: “This is the ANC government! Appointing him permanently?! These days the more connected you are, the richer and safer you are. This is how our government operates. Journalists don’t need licences. They do their work to inform the public. The public won’t agree to Motsoeneng’s suggestion”.
Mr Selomane Mahlatsi and Mr Thabo Clement Malatji said: “He has a great idea. It will be good if they need licences because sometimes they write lies. They have to be professional as it is a proper job. Mr Motsoeneng however had no right to give that comment though as he himself lied about his qualification. It was perhaps just that he was scared of the journalists”.
Mr Patson Sekgobela said: “I’ve heard about him. The law about protection of information etc. is alright, but I agree with Mr Motsoeneng that journalists should be regulated more”. With him are Mr Adam Mafane and Thulani.
Mr James Lekhoana said: “I don’t think they should be licenced. Take the journalist to court if they write something wrong”.
Mr Lesley Ndou said: “I don’t agree with him. Journalists are regulated enough already. Some people in government just want to hide corruption. That is the main thing why they want more regulation and licences. His appointment is politically motivated. I think he is a close friend of the big man”.
Mr Ussuf Choonara (middle) said: “I disagree with this man. Journalist must be free to do their work. They must be able to move around and do what they want”. With him are Mr Arfan Mohammed and Mr Akbir Sian.
Right: Mr Mphele Kgasago said: “No, I don’t think Motsoeneng has the right idea. Journalists should be free to report however they want to. They must just check their facts and get all the sides of the story before publishing. The editors should also double check their journalists’ stories. Maybe Motsoeneng was feeling the heat because there are so many question marks around him”.

COO - your opinion about this issue
Mr Thabiso Mphahlele said: “I don’t agree with him that journalists must be licenced. That will only help some people to cover up corruption. Only a few journalists will anyway qualify for a licence and they’ll be scared of losing the licence so they won’t be free to write about anything”.
Mr Freddy Mkhabela said: “I totally disagree with Motsoeneng. If journalists should have licences he should also have an appropriate qualification. Then he cannot be appointed where he is now without matric. Personally I do think journalists should be regulated a bit more. Journalists must write facts and proof and not on rumours”. Links: Me.
Left: Ms. Silence Mokoo said: “His appointment and statements are not right. The things in place like the Press Ombudsman is enough”. With her are Motheo and Lebone.
Right: Mr Thami Malope said: “They are just trying to put stumbling blocks in the way of journalists. In some cases though, selfregulation is not enough. Journalists give us information. If they limit the journalists’ capacity with a licence, the information we will get will also be limited. This licence thing he wants is like when they disbanded the Scorpions because people were afraid they’ll be exposed”.
Mr Kgampu Maphori said: “I definitely disagree with Motsoeneng. He does not even have a proper qualification and now he wants to have licences enforced on journalists?”
Me. Left: Mr Joseph Mohlala said: “I find it strange – him being appointed permanently now. He should have cleared himself first before this became permanent. The media guys are already regulated so much by things such as the Secrecy Bill, for a guy like him – with no qualification himself to say others should have licences.
Left: Mr Sajiel Ajaz and Mr Atif Hussnain said: “No, it is not good. They must let him go. People like that is too dangerous for our country. He is a lucky man with that salary! He should leave the journalists alone. Just train your journalists well”.
Mr Ralph Sekhukhume said: “I don’t agree with Motsoeneng that journalists should have licences. He lied to the public about his qualifications in the first place. He is just trying to protect himself”.
