Bumpy road The Independent Electoral Commission chose to see the positive side of things when all of a sudden posters appeared for the second round of registration that took place last weekend, going so far as to advertise the registration posters on a pothole warning sign next to the road between Lydenburg and Steelpoort (photograph left). As if anyone

wants to rush off and register to vote for such a road... The newspaper visited several voting (registration) stations during the course of Saturday, and found everything peaceful and quiet. There were no incidents as there was nobody to cause any. Registration on Saturday proceeded extremely slow. One registration officer atrributed it to the fact that people where at their workplaces “and also they are attending funerals, maybe more people will come after the funerals” she said. One voting station, at Boerboomkraal on the Lydenburg road from Burgersfort, literally sat on the stoep with a

problem. No key to the school. But this problem did not deter the friendly staff at the voting station. They simply proceeded to sit on the stoep and started registering (and as witnesssed by Platinum Gazette , very efficiently) (photograph bottom left). Party agents also posed no problem, they were accommodated under a tree across the school grounds from where they could witness the process from under the shade (bottom photograph). What happened was that when the election personnel found the school locked they arranged with the Police to go and fetch the key, but they on their turn,

got delayed because of a crisis on their way back to the voting station. According to the IEC office in Burgersfort, the frequency of registration picked up on Sunday and a total of 7034 voters were registered during the weekend. For prospective voters who still want to register, all is not lost. They can still register at the IEC office in Burgersfort up to the day the date of the forthcoming local government elections is proclaimed. Meanwhile, residents had interesting views around registering and the election. Turn to page 6 for more ...

11 MARCH 2011 Anglo American Platinum is going to spend about six thousand million rand on the Twickenham Project to become a fully fledged mine by 2015, without any frofit up until then, says the man at the helm at Twickenham, Mr Musala Mutangwa. Mr Mutangwa was speaking at a stakeholder breakfast and community builder awards function held at Twickenham last week Friday, bringing communities and politicians up to date with what is happening at the project. Lstening attentively was not only local community stakeholders, but also the Mayor of Sekhukhune District, Mogobo David magabe and Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Ralepane Mamekoa. Meanwhile, while Mr Mutangwa was speaking to his audience, the problems of mines and communities were highlighted as people stood outside, busy with serious diplomacy trying to attend the function as they did not get an invite, but claimed to represent certain parts of the communities around Twickenham. After some differences and misunderstandings were sorted out, all amicabley attended the remainder of the function, proving that mining areas can also be dangerous minefields. Mr Mutangwa in his business report told guests that a concentrator plant will be commissioned at Twickenham in 2015 and it would then start to process the ore that had been stockpiled in the meantime at about 80 percent capacity. At that stage the mine will become fulle operational (we are now still at the foundation phase of the ‘house’) he explained. When the mine becomes fully operational in 2015 about 5000 people will be employed, with the company aiming to employ at least 75 percent of the workforce from surrounding communities. Schools and children was an important point he highlighted in his speech, saying that children in high school must recognise that their will be an opprtunity for them in 2015 and that they must gear their education to that goal. “We need skilled people from this area”, he said. Also speaking, Excecutive mayor of Sekhukhune District, Cllr Magabe, said it is still governents policy that a tripartite partnership between government, mining companies and communities exist. These partnerships are the keys to economic development and should be strengthened in the future. After all the speeeches several awards were handed over to prizewinners in the community, which varied from prizes to pupils who excelled in their matricexams, to the donation of kit to a soccer team.

Grant payouts verified The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is currently doing a physical verification to ensure that grants are going to the right places. This week people flocked to the SASSA office in Praktiseer, bringing children along. The queues became uncontrollable at some stage and on Monday some of the streets had to be

closed and the local traffic department called in to help control the queues that snaked out of sight of the SASSA office. Verification was also done at Ga-Motodi. People came from as yearly as 05:00 to stand with the children in the queues for verification. Mr James Shirindi from the SASSA branch in Polokwane told Platinum Gazette that they are currently going through the villages in Greater Tubatse and that people don’t have to go to the Praktiseer office. Although a list of the dates and places where they would be were promised to the newspaper, nothing was received by the time of going to press. Yesterday, before going to press they were busy at Leboeng where another large crowd of people gathered to have themselves verified. Mr Shirindi asked that people be on the lookout for the village verifications because then people would not have to come to Praktiseer and children would not be kept out of school unnecessary.

Do you have the right to complain? This past weekend was voter registration weekend. Although the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was satisfied with the turnout in the area, many people are still not registered or have not verified that they are on the Voters Roll. We asked readers whether they think that people who are not planning to vote have the right to complain about things such as service delivery?

Me. Ek is hier gebore! Ek is ‘n Suid-Afrikaner. Sou ek gaan stem sal iets verander? Het ek daai waarborg?” Mr John Mushinga said: “I believe you have nothing to lose by voting. You can try, then complain”.

Me.

Ms Kgaogelo Thobejane and Ms Brenda Moraba said: “We won’t vote because they’ve given us nothing. We don’t have roads, electricity or water. Why should we vote? It is our right to complain”.

Right: Ms Lebogang Ramasobane and Mr Tobius Mokwena said: “We really feel that government is not doing enough. Lots of people have no streets, no electricity, no water etc. Yet, we faithfully pay our taxes. Government does not care. There is no need to vote, but on the other hand if you don’t vote you are not going to get any change. It is a 50/50 , never a win-win situation”.

Ms Comfort Jubsta and Ms Pontsho Molabe said: “ What’s the point of voting people into power if nothing is going to change? We’ve been voting but we don’t see anything happening. Potholes are everywhere, we struggle with water, so we don’t see the point of voting. Nothing is motivating us to go and vote. You vote for this person and nothing happens, then you vote for that one and still nothing happens. Yes we can complain because of this”.

Mr Vincent Mohlabe said: “It is not right because we can get good service delivery. People must vote. But it is also your right not to vote, but then don’t complain”.

Mr Peniel (Bantwini) Marule said: “You don’t have the right to complain if you did not vote. You’ve been silenced if you don’t vote. Vote, then complain”.

Mr. Sydney Mojele said: “No, you don’t have the right to complain. You must go and vote before you can complain”.

Me. Gertrud van der Mescht sê: “Dit maak nie ‘n verskil of ek stem of nie. Dis soos: If you worry you die, if you don’t worry you still die. As ek stem gaan die paaie regkom? Nee. As ek nie stem nie gaan die paaie regkom? Nee. Jy kan seker nie regtig kla nie, maar om te stem maak nie ‘n verskil nie”.

Me. Dis mos hoekom jy stem”. By haar is Brandon.

The princess and the frog masked ball Joshua Generation had a ‘Princess and the Frog’ themed Masquerade Ball last week Friday evening, 4 March 2011. This event was held to raise funds towards upgrading their Computer Centers and it was a huge success. Couples turned out in extravagant formal wear and masks. The atmosphere was dreamy and relaxed. The food was well prepared and service was exceptional. It was a great opportunity for the community to reach out to one another and meet new acquaintances. Joshua Generation would like to thank the following people/businesses in contributing to making this evening unforgettable: Tubatse Chrome Club, Maliflora, Guests & Glasses, Ruan Kleyhans @ Photo it, Kobus the DJ, School Staff, Parents and Sponsors. This event will become an annual event as Joshua Generation only received positive feedback and financial support. Do not miss out on next years’ event!

Don’t miss this... Ladies Golf Day On 26 March Tubatse Chrome Club will be hosting a Ladies Golf Day. The day will start at 10:00 and all ladies who are interested are welcome. The day will take on the form of a golf clinic where those who know nothing about golf can start to learn and those who can play the game, can improve on their game. After the day the top 10 ladies will be selected to play against the juniors at the club and friendly games against ladies from the surrounding towns. This however does not mean that the other ladies will be left out in the cold. Training and development will continue. There is also no need to have all the equipment on the 26th. Just come and experience and enjoy the game. This clinic and training will be free of charge. A free lunch will also be served on the day. To book your space contact Rob Higgs on 082 309 4653.
