MEC to hand over title deed The title deed of the land where Modikwa Platinum Mine is currently operating, will be handed over to the community by the MEC of Agriculture in Limpopo, Mr Jacob Marule, on Saturday. The previously arranged handing over ceremony had to be cancelled because of the recent NUM strike at Modikwa Platinum Mine. MEC Marule will be accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Mr Mogobo David Magabe and the Mayor of Greater Tubatse Local Municipality Mr Nkosi Josias Mahlake. The title deed is for a claimed 3138.4388 hectares of land worth R4.3 million and about 3000 people are expected to attend the celebration. The Department of Rural development and Land Reform says after negotiations between the mine and the Mangabane community as the new landowners, the following benefits were agreed upon: Transfer of portion 1 and remaining extent of the farm Onverwacht 292 KT in title, measuring 3138.4388 hectare; Payment of rental on the Property by Modikwa after registration of transfer to the Trust; Payment of R4.3m (the purchase consideration received from the State for the Property); Consultation with the Mangabane Community with a view to incorporating
the community into Modikwa’s Social & Labour Plan programmes; Construction of a community centre to be shared with the Matimatjatji community; Entering into a long term agreement for the provision of small engineering repair works to Modikwa; Forming a joint venture with a stationery company for the provision of stationery to Modikwa and surrounding mines and the establishment of internet cafes within communities of the area; Fencing off the heritage sites of the Mangabane Community. Originally nineteen separate claims were lodged on the farm Onverwacht 292 KT commonly known as Difagate by several individuals and were later consolidated as per agreement between claimants and they called themselves the Mangabane Community. The claimants were dispossessed of their land rights in 1979 because of racial discriminatory laws and the area was earmarked for mining activities after the discovery of platinum. The claimants had unlimited usage of the land before their rights were downgraded to that of labour tenants and their livelihood depended mainly on livestock and crop farming. After the successful application of the land claim, the Mangabane community established a legal entity called Hwashi Difagate Community Trust that will benefit 244 households.

It is always good to make use of a recovery service that is a SATRA member. (SATRA = South African Towing and Recovery Association). “SATRA is able to manage and guide you through the whole process, whether it's a breakdown or an accident. You can call SATRA 24/7 for free advice and assistance arrangement on 0861 0 SATRA (0861 0 72872). Know who your insurer is. Your policy document will detail the name of the underwriting insurer. As an example, Santam underwrites a policy from ABC insurance brokers. If you are not insured, we Sakkie do offer a 24/7 credit card facility and will always assist you. Make sure your insurer will pay your entire towing bill. If they will only pay a portion. Or have given you a limit, we suggest you change your insurer, because you will find yourself having to negotiate on behalf of your insurer after having paid full premiums for "half a product". This will never happen if you are insured with a SATRA business partner”. (www.satra.co.za)

The Sekhukhune District Municipality has on Sunday concluded its IDP/Budget Consultations for the financial year 20122013. The Sunday consultations were comprised of all councillors from all over the District Municipality and were held at Jane Furse Comprehensive High School in Makhuduthamaga District Municipality. Speaking during the conclusion of the hearings, the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr Mogobo David Magabe said “throughout the month long process we have managed to touch nearly all centres existing within our district municipality. We are indeed motivated that we have engaged all our stakeholders as the district and are very proud of the type of response we received from our people. We wish to extend our heartfelt appreciation to everybody who has joined us to ultimately complete this mammoth task of realising our participatory democracy. We are more humbled because people have rescheduled their important projects in order to be part of this important foundation towards delivery of basic services”. The 2012-2013 IDP/Budget allocations were graced by Mayors from all the five local municipalities, Members of the Mayoral Committee, District Speaker and Chief Whip, all councillors, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, mining sector, business sector, community-based organisations, and interested formations. They started with a meeting with staff members by the Executive Mayor in Groblersdal, the head office of the District government. Executive Mayor Cllr Mogobo David Magabe said “in presenting our envisaged
budget of one- comma-one billion rands (R1,1 billion) for the financial year 20122013, I can state on record that I have instructed government officials to embark on business unusual. I seriously warned them that failure to respond to the basic needs of our people through the most common means like under-spending, overspending, laziness, and roll-overs will not be tolerated. The message is very clear, as politicians we can no longer afford to keep unpatriotic and lazy officials who only pride themselves in acts of fraud and corruption. Those will be caught and be named, shamed and arrested”. Throughout the consultations, members of the public were given the opportunity we given chance to interact with the priorities list of all the five local municipalities and the District Municipality. Among the most common issues raised are shortages of water, sanitation, electricity, roads, inadequate health care, jobs for the youth and development at large. Among villages visited are Kgopane in Greater Tubatse Municipality, Eenkantaal in Makhuduthamaga Municipality, Elandsdoren in Elias Motsoaledi Municipality, Ga-Selepe in Fetakgomo Municipallity and Manapjane in Ephraim Mogale Municipaliy. Throughout this process all local municipalities were given chance to present their IDP/Budgets for the coming financial year alongside the district municipality. The Executive Mayor responded to all concerns by indicating to the population of Sekhukhune that all their concerns are genuine and will be considered before the final IDP/Budget is adopted for the financial year 2012-2013.

Tubatse Police had their hands full during the recent long weekend with roads accidents in the area. From 27 April to 29 April 2012 eleven motor vehicle collisions were reported at Tubatse SAPS and six of the cases are further investigated. In one of those cases one driver was killed in an accident that occurred in Bothashoek (Dithabaneng) on Friday night 27 April 2012. It is alleged that two vehicles were involved in a head on collision and as result another vehicle was also involved. One driver was seriously injured and he died later at the hospital while the other drivers and passengers sustained minor injuries. The drivers were taken to hospital for blood alcohol tests. The Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol. A peaceful march was held by community members from villages around the Twickenham Platinum Mine Project last week Thursday. The small group handed a handwritten memorandum to mine representatives at Hackney Shaft. According to the memorandum, read to all present by Mr Abednego Mashabela, the community wants more aid from the mine with community projects such as the tarring of roads, the re-gravelling of internal streets in villages and the erection of street lights. They also want respect for their tradistional
leaders, compliance by the mine with ;labour laws and employment for the disabled, youths and women at the mine in senior positions. The group also feel that the mine’s development plans should be coordinated with that of government. New Private Community School for Burgersfort Access to high quality schooling is crucial for the future of our children, and for the sustainability and growth of the economy of the greater Tubatse area as a whole. More Telkom troubles In the 27 April 2012 newspaper Platinum Gazette reported about the trouble we’ve experienced with our Telkom line. Since then we’ve had a call from Telkom to inform us about our next option. They suggested that we should travel the 160km to the nearest walk-in office and apply for a wireless connection. We found this suggestion totally absurd as there is currently no wireless coverage in Burgersfort. This was established during the more than half an hour long call on which we’ve reported on 27 April. Apart from the terrible service to expect someone to travel that far for something that should be sorted out with a simple repair or otherwise in a way that would least inconvenience the client, we already knew the option they are giving is not a solution. When the client services consultant was asked whether she knows where the closest walk-in office was, she was unable to tell us. She was also not aware that the solution she was trying to sell would not be viable. She was politely asked to get back to us with a workable suggestion. We are stil waiting for her to call back... Platinum Gazette has however not been the only company who have had trouble with Telkom in the Burgersfort/Steelpoort area. After the previous article we’ve received the following letters: “Just to let you guys know….
I’m living in Natosville, Burgersfort and since October 2010, our Telkom land line was discontinued because of cable theft. They have refused to repair or replace the line. We have since been using our cellphones as well. Hope that someone can take these guys to task for the pathetic way in which they run a company!!!! We can’t call it a telephone SERVICE, because there is NO service. Thank You Ayub Bhaijee” “Thank you for the valued electronic newspaper. Always looking fwd to it. Sad about Telkom. We at Sylvania Metals (Pty) Ltd Steelpoort Plant have the same problem. About 2 and a half years ago our lines were also stolen in Steelpoort. Telkom informed us also telephonically after numerous calls that the line will not be replaced because it will cost them over R 200 000.00 to replace. We shared a line with Samancor. Their response was that our bill is too low monthly to replace the costly line. We waited 6 months to have the line installed when we applied for one. We had the privilege of using it for 8 months before it got stolen. Ever since then we are using out cell phones to make calls as well. Have a blessed safe week! Kind regards Linda Bosch”

On Thursday the 24 April Modikwa Concentrator Plant celebrated the milestone achievement of 2 year Lost-Time Injury Free work hours. During the occasion both UASA and NUM representatives attributed the achievement to zero tolerance for unsafe acts, and employee’s commitment to safety. The Concentrator Plant motto “Two Steps to safety” which encourages the employees to focus on their Mini Risk Assessments, and Standards and Procedures, had a noticeable change in the safety belief of the employees. This resulted in an improved safety culture within the Plant. Acting SHEQ Leader, Hennie wood in absentia, send a message of support to the Plant Team and further send his farewell message. Mr. Tumi Molapo Concentrator Leader highlighted that “if safety is possible with me, then it can be possible with you”. Employees should strive to improve on health and safety performance by fostering a workplace free of harm and set a bench mark in the industry on safety and health. The Plant has decided to take safety forward through sustaining the excellent performance, partnership and self-discipline. The Concentrator Plant management has further recognised and acknowledged the
outstanding safety practices and effort by employees. This was shown by presenting an award to Jimmy Pfiser, who always took safety very serious and went beyond the call of duty to ensure that he seek ways of assisting where he can, put in place initiatives that will raise awareness on safety, Plant PPE requirements, installation of rubber mats in showers to reduce risk of slippery floors. The results of “Two steps to safety” resulted in the development of a new motto “My safety action = No harm and Zero injuries”. Inputs to this motto were provided by plant management to assist the further improvement on safety. “My safety action= No harm and Zero injuries”, builds on the foundation laid by “two steps to safety” and will further enhance concentrator plant safety over the next years. All employees supported the motto by putting their signatures to the pledge.

Why are so many jobs still being lost? Economists expressed their shock this week when Statistics South Africa announced that the official unemployment rate in South Africa for the first quarter increased to 25.2%. According to the broad definition used, there is now 7.7 million people in South Africa who are unemployed. Only four out of every 10 people have work. One of the shocking facts is that the percentage of employers decreased with 5% compared to the figure for the last quarter of 2011. There is now only 669 000 employers in South Africa. It is also much less than 10 years ago when South Africa had 850 000 employers. In the formal sector 107 000 jobs were lost and in the informal sector 28 000 jobs were cut. The construction industry was hit hard with 71 000 employment opportunities that were lost. According to economists this shows that the infrastructure development programme is not yet at the desired levels to have an impact on unemployment. They aslo predict that the tough economic circumstances will continue for the rest of the year in both South Africa and the world. We asked readers what they think is the problem why so many jobs are being lost and what they think should be done to remedy the situation.
Ms Jenni Steyn said: “I think our government is mismanaged. They look only after themselves and not after the workers who grow the economy and make the money for government and the country”. With her is Aidan Wafer.
Ms Sarah Maseko and Ms Surprise Masinga said: “Friends and family are hired when creating jobs. Some people don’t have a qualification and if you don’t have it, they will let you go easily and you don’t find work easily”.
Mnr. Baie werke is so verloor”.
Ms Nyarai Mungofa said: “People don’t want to learn. They don’t value education. The jobs available are mostly for skilled people. You see the papers are full of them. If people advance themselves, they can be much surer of a job and will not be laid off so easily”.
Mr Justice Mphahlele and Mr Tshepo Mabowa said: “There is an imbalance in terms of government creating stability in job creation. They are on face value trying to create jobs, but on the other hand government is filled with corruption. Look at the tender system. People get tenders illegally - yet there is a notion that we are creating jobs. The tender recipients get money, but in the same month they receive it, they lose lots of it after they’ve bought off some hands in government. They money they get go through various hands and it does not go into the people that should be employed’s pockets. They should totally scrap the tender system and everything must go through the Department of Public Works who way back handled everything government was building and taking care of. Left: Mr Brian Thebe said: “We ourselves blacks. We are always jealous of each other. If you’ve got money you keep it for yourself. You don’t use it to generate and create jobs for others and create economic growth. We are also lacking experience and we always complain. Government is not helping employers to create more jobs”.
Mnr. Johan Vogel sê: “As daar ‘n ander party aan bewind kom sal hulle dalk meer werk skep”.
Mnr. Christo Augustyn sê: “Daar is nou groter apartheid as in die tagtiger jare. Hulle moet dit doodmaak dan sal die land regkom”.
Mr Jan Mgigi said: “The government must tighten the borders. There is a free flow of people in South Africa. These people work for cheaper than local employees and employers also bargain with them and don’t follow the labour laws. If they can tighten the borders things will turn around. They should also empower the youth. They do crime because many of them use nyaope (drug) and it makes you want to steal to just have money to buy it”.
Mr Thami Malope said: “It is because some businesses are struggling because of the economy that people lose their jobs. Businesses are also scared to take in people because when they strike they destroy things. Government must have us fix what we destroy ourselves. We must talk, not destroy”.
Mr Anthony Mashego said: “The problem is the tender process. You cannot have private companies responsible for water, roads and health. Now people are employed for short periods of time because of the tenders. Previously the TPA did everything and they employed lots of people. Water and Roads should be reversed back to them”.
Mnr. Thias Korf sê: “Hulle praat net en doen niks nie, daarom word werk nie geskep nie”. By hom is Ricardo.

This year was the 13th annual competition. Every Fire Team consists of 5 members competing against each other in 3 different fire drills. The Tubatse Chrome team took the third place with the Devil’s Cross. They team lacked no spirit, and took a long their mascot, Chief Kruger, which is a sure hit under the ladies! Chief

Tubatse Chrome Management makes a difference Tubatse Chrome’s Management team decided to make a difference in the local community. During April, 60 leaders from Tubatse Chrome embarked on a life changing experience in the local communities. The team left Tubatse Club with local taxis and were transported to different locations in the community. Some team members went to Maelebe Primary School at Tukakgomo and Kgahlanong Secondary School in Ga-Mapodile Township where they assisted with feeding the children and spend some time with the children to discuss their career opportunities. Another group visited the soup kitchen at Tukakgomo. The Tukakgomo Kitchen (Khomanani)
prepares food for orphaned children. The team helped setting up a vegetable garden. Yet another team visited Bokome Pre-Primary School where they erected a fence to keep the children safe. The school looks after children between the ages of 1 and 5. Everyone also had the opportunity to visit a local home in Mampuru or Phasha, and spent some time with the locals. The day was brought to completion having some fun with local dancers. This was a remarkable experience for the Tubatse Team. We asked one of the participants to tell us what her personal experience was. Marike Jonker, a Process Specialist at West plant was part of the team that went to the Maelebe primary school. She commented: “At Maelebe primary school I got to interact with the children ages 3-5. This was an overwhelming experience
as I got to experience first-hand the setbacks that these children have to endure. It was an eye opening experience. Each of those children touched my heart with their little hands. Even though they have setbacks, the obvious being transport, luxury and setting, these children learn so much from having so little resources available to them. The one thing that these little kids taught me while spending time with them was that no matter what the circumstances – you can always walk around with a smile on your face – and they do, each and every day (it took them some time to warm up to me though). We just have to remember that giving them new buildings and running water and food is good for them, but in the end the real satisfaction for these kids lies in the TIME we provide them with… spending time and getting to learn and share with them as they open up their hearts to you is the best experience anyone can ask for. You will never realize the impact that a child can have on your life, until open up your heart and spend some time with one. During the afternoon, I was fortunate to be a part of a team who played
soccer against local children in the GaMampuru area. This was truly an amazing experience as you get to be a part of the passion of these youngsters – even though they ran circles around us – the interaction with them was unforgettable. The part of the day that was truly memorable and that I will never forget, was the openness and warmth that these people accepted us with into their community. The festivities that ended the night were AWESOME… dancing with the locals and enjoying time with them was truly and unforgettable and a lifelong memory that is imprinted on my soul “

Jeanette is privileged to say that her parents are still married after 41 years and has a deep love for her family.“They always have made life more standing in some dark times”. She is married to Shayne and is the happy step-mom of three children who she loves and nurtures as her own. Jeanette experienced the terrible loss of a child after her baby girl (3 months old) died. Jeanette now thinks of her as her baby-angel above who watches over them. This experience to her is a reminder that life is short, don’t stay mad, love life and most importantly love your family. She feels this is easy with a wonderful husband who loves, cares and supports her. Someone who is the love of her life, her best friend and her soulmate. Jeanette is the manager for the family owned construction company where she has worked for the past 17 years. Her passion for her job most certainly has to do with the fact that it has become a family legacy, and she would like to keep this legacy going. She states that she is a very hard working person and easily finds great positive escape in her work. “Employ the nation” she always says. In her free time, Jeanette’s hobbies beside her job are to host dinners or high teas for her family and she loves scrap booking.
Lionel’s longlife tomato Mr Lionel De Aguiar’s tomato harvest was a big success this year. It is however not the size or the health of the tomatoes that had him amazed over the past few months, it was the life a single tomato picked late December 2011. On Tuesday this week when Platinum Gazette visited him, the tamato was still looking fresh. He says that the tomato has never been refrigerated and was placed on the windowsill in his kitchen with another from the same vine. “I like to see how long things last compared to those we buy in the shops” he explained. The ‘brother’ of this longlife tomato has by now shrivelled up and is starting to decompose (see photograph below). He is looking for someone that could help him explain this extraordinary tomato. People can visit him at Nalito’s Restaurant in Burgersfort.

Fieldtrip to Hoedspruit On the 4th of May 2012, the Grade 3 and 5 learners of Calvin College had a fieldtrip to the Hoedspruit Endangered
Species Centre (HESC). This centre focuses mainly on the conservation of rare, vulnerable or endangered animals, but the cheetah conservation is their main priority. The learners had a highly educational tour, teaching them about conservation and encouraging each one to embrace their ability to make a difference. This hands-on student’s programme also showed them how to manage their own environment, and protecting it for future generations. This visit was a life changing and wonderful learning experience to all.
