Dagga is still illegal
During the past few weeks, reports of individuals that landed in hot water because of possession, cultivation and trading in dagga filled the news pages of local and national media like clockwork. This week a dagga article or two appears on page two of the newspaper. It also seems that a recent court judgement is confusing people. The judgement says that cultivating dagga at your home for personal use should not be illegal. This judgement is appealed by the State, which means that even if you just plant it at your home for personal use, it still remains illegal until the appeal is finalised. The judgement also do not change the status of dagga as a drug, whether it is legal or illegal. It remains a drug. And the large scale farming, cultivation and trading of dagga remains untouched by the judgement under appeal. It is and remains illegal. So, be warned ...
The white elephant ... Remains a white elephant and probably the most expensive advertising post Burgersfort can boast of. Almost ten years ago Platinum Gazette was heavily criticized for asking the question whether it was worth it to spend so much money on a pedestrian walkway over Dirk Winterbach Street. So what is the situation today, a few years on? Nice bridge with no (read: zilch, zero, nada) pedestrians using the utility, because of amongst other reasons, crime concerns. Go figure ‌

Cultivation of dagga is illegal The Ohrigstad SAPS arrested a 48-year old man on 7 May 2018 for cultivating dagga. The man was caught growing 27 dagga plants with an estimated street value of R500. The plants were confiscated and will be destroyed. He was cultivating the plants in the Brandraai farm area and was discovered while the police were conducting crime prevention operations within the farming community. Sgt Kholofelo Phokane from the Ohrigstad SAPS warned the community that they will continue to arrest anyone found in possession of drugs. “We urge our community members to continue working witht the police to curb this as it poses a danger to the community and especially the youth,” he said. Women in farming
Shebeen closed
Protea Community Farms is a community proud of themselves for taking the lead by also encouraging women to take on farming. The community relies on leaders like Mr Nkosi from the Department of Agriculture to assist in training the farmers. “We realised that farming and land is one of the cardinal pillars on which our country rely. This together with education, development, sport and recreation is ignored by many, but valued here at Draaikraal farm”, said Community leaders. (Information & photographs: Protea Community Forum).
The Burgersfort SAPS closed a shebeen at Mareseleng Village on Sunday, 6 May 2018. A community member provided the police wiht a tip-off about the operation of the shebeen. The police officers investigated and found a 38-year old woman selling liquor without a license. She was arrested and the liquor confiscated. The SAPS will continue to clamp down on outlets not operating with a license and not adhering to the rules set out for selling liquor. (Information & photograph: Constable V. SDM hosts IDP consultation at Leboeng The Sekhukhune District Municipality is continueing their tour of the area to conduct consultation meetings for the 2018/2019 Draft Integrated Development Plan (IDP). Last week Thursday they visited the community hall at Leboeng within the Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality. The meeting was well attended. The meeting was led by SDM MMC for water and sanitation, Cllr Mbusi Mahlangu Ka-Mphezulu. (Photographs: SDM Communications Unit)
Under construction Storm water drain covers were damaged by heavy vehicles pulling off the road and driving over them. This means that many are currently undergoing construction for repairs. It may be a
little too late for the rainy season and at the moment doubling as a ‘container’ for a wide range of debris and rubbish. Hopefully this will be removed before covering and the next downpour of rain.
While a slow down in the economy has hit many businesses in the area over the last few months, it was business as usual for this lady selling mealies at the busy Tubatse Crossing Mall intersection. Her popular ‘road house’ approach to serve customers within their vehicles is an inspiration for others to think outside the box to make their businesses work in a tough environment. (Although her customers sometimes cause a regretable traffic pile-up at peak times).
Danger...
When carrying a load stretching past the back of a vehicle, some type of red warning indicator is required by law to warn fellow motorists of the danger and to keep them at a safe distance. Unfortunately in Burgersfort the law is not always followed as seen on this photograph taken in Dirk Winterbach Street.

Opel Crossland X for:
Safety Comfort Quality Driveability Economy Following its separation from General Motors and international acquisition by PSA (Peugeot-Citroën), Opel is going it alone in South Africa and needs to rebuild market presence. To this end the company has introduced the Crossland X in South Africa towards the end of 2017 and Platinum Gazette got the opportunity to drive the 1.2 Cosmo turbo this week. After getting the keys from the friendly personnel at Westvaal Mashishing, we immediately headed towards the Long Tom Pass. The SUV competes in the same market segment as the Suzuki Vitara and the Ford EcoSport, and the more expensive one we took for a test drive even against it’s own brother, the Mokka X. It is a fast growing segment and the question is whether the Crossland X has the ability to lure buyers away from other offerings. We did not drive the other cars, except the Mokka X and it is totally different in character than our daily commutes. The three cylinder 1.2 turbo engine may be small, but the 81 kW and 205 Nm it produces supply enough grunt to pass a few trucks (and cars) quickly and safely up Long Tom. The engine is shared with its new brother, the Peugeot 2008, and pulls very smoothly and quietly in tandem with the six speed automatic gearbox. We tried it, but there was really no need for manual shifting mode when overtaking in this car. We also experienced no jerkiness when the auto box shifted under harsh acceleration. Our car was furnished in what is described as “Florey – Jet Black” for the cloth and vinyl seats in the brochure, which made for a somewhat somber, but practical and stylish interior. Inside for the most part, the quality appears solid, with a soft-touch upper facia and leather-wrapped steering wheel providing tactile reassurance that this isn’t a budget offering. The seats are comfortable and provide good long-distance support. Overall, we’d say the cabin ambience is slightly more “premium”. The boot’s size is competitive with rivals and the rear seatback is split 60/40. The bench can also slide to increase legroom or boot space as required. It’s a spacious-enough vehicle, with good head- and shoulder-room all-round. The boot is decently shaped and sized at 400 litres with about 100 litres more space available if the rear bench is pushed forward. There is also a smaller, hidden compartment underneath the boot floor. Fold down the rear seats and you have good usable space on offer, but not quite class leading. Opel claims a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 5.4L/100 km. We really don’t know about that one as the trip computer in the car (which we reset before our drive) showed a figure which was much higher, while other testers in the motoring industry reported a more realistic figure of about 7L/100 km (which is still very good, by the way). The ride height is pegged at 124mm which is only just sufficient to climb a kerb. Nevertheless, the 215/50 17 inch tyres contribute to a good ride quality on gravel, which is probably as far as you’ll ever see one venture “off-road”. We think the Crossland X is a leader in the segment when it comes to in-car entertainment features. Standard safety items include tyre pressure monitoring, ABS, front and rear parking assistance (with reverse camera), ESP, hill-start assist, 6 airbags, rear Isofix child mounts and even lane-departure warning (which can be deactived). It carries a 5-star EuroNCAP crash rating, with 85% and 84% scored respectively for occupant and child protection. So, it’s a very safe car. On the entertainment side it gets Opel’s Intellilink system and in terms of comfort there really is little to complain about. As per usual for an Opel, the steering wheel is adjustable for rake and reach, and the driver’s seat in this model is height-adjustable, too. Finding a very comfortable driving position is therefore easy. In the rear, you can slide the bench backwards if you want to prioritise legroom. Automated wipers and lights, as well as cruise control and climate control are also included as standard. Crossland X prices start at R241 000 excluding VAT for the non-turbo manual transmission car. The Cosmo automatic with 1.2 turbo mill will set you back R370 000 (VAT included). Westvaal Steelpoort and Westvaal Mashishing can be contacted at 013 000 8621 and 013 230 9230. The car comes standard with a 5-years/120 000 km warranty and 3-years/60 000 km service plan. Service intervals are scheduled for every 15 000 km (or 12 months).
