After further investigation in the area two individuals, Agnes Rantho (41) and Hendrick Phala(52) were arrested in two different houses at Riba Cross (Polaseng). Opposition parties in Greater Tubatse Municipality staged a walkout from the council chamber in Burgersfort last week Thursday in protest against what they see as unlawful proceedings with regard to the way things are done. Their main objection against what was happening, is that they did not receive at least 48 hours notice of the urgent council meeting as required in article 17 (c) of the Rules of Order of the Council of the Greater Tubatse Municipality 2007 (resolution no A87/2007). According to the parties they also did not receive agendas before the time and had no time to study the issues

before the council. Their objections was noted and then they were ignored, they claim. The fact that everything did not happen according to the rules (they were phoned according to the rules, but only 26 hours before the time and no aganda was available at that time). This is not the first time they are complaining as they say it happend before. Then they received the aganda less than 24 hours before the meeting. The DA investigates possible legal action, while the other parties will refer the issue to their provincial offices. What happened inter alia at the meeting is that Acting Municipal Manager, Lemon Phala, was appointed Municipal Manager.

Focus on women

This week the focus shifted to women in society and their role in the economy. President Jacob Zuma said in the Peter Mokhaba Stadium in Polokwane on Women’s Day on Tuesday that women should be more empowered in companies especially the mining setor. US visitors in Kgautswane celebrate Women’s Day A group of 14 tourists from America visited Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre in Limpopo on a cultural exchange experience. The tourists consisted of nine African American youths and five chaperones arrived at the centre on 8 August and they slept at the centre. Their visit coincided Women’s Day on 9 August and they celebrated the day with some of the villagers at Ga-Makgopa in Kgautswane Village where they spent the day experimenting and having the feel of African village woman’s life. Among other things, they were taught how to grind mealies, fetch water from a well about a kilometre away, balancing a water pot on the head while at the same time carrying a baby on the back, cook porridge and other cultural meals. According to Ms Sharon Lachappelle their visit was a learning expedition to learn and experience South African village life and what is happening at Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre. “Back home I manage a similar institution called Baxter Community Center specializing in mentoring, day care centre, dental and medical clinic, employment, tax programme, budgets, sewing classes, recreation classes, prayer clinic, cooking classes and community gardens. I think we share the same ideas some of the activities are similar to those we do back home. We plan visiting the village every year”.

Some of the tourists said it was their first time to set foot on South African soil and they had this to say: 14 year old Dangela Klyce said; “It is awesome, I enjoyed myself and it is very different to America”. 19 year old Shanea Winbush said she has learned not to take things for granted. “I was surprised that we share many beliefs. I was also amazed at how the community came together as one; we tend to do that as well back home in the US”. Raqhelle Millbrooks (14) said it was fun to experience the African cultures personally rather than watching it on TV. Actually doing it! Like carrying the wood, water and a crying baby at the back. Calvon Owens (14); “It was exciting to learn what South Africans went through and I learned the true story not what we see on TV. TVs show only the sadness part of the country and they forget or ignore the happiness and the loveliness of this beautiful countryside”. Kgautswane Thusong Service Centre manager and founder Clara Masinga said she wholeheartedly enjoyed the day and learned a thing or two from the tourists. “I feel very blessed to have people from abroad recognizing what we do in this little village. I appeal to others to follow a suit and support this village developmental initiative”. Masinga can be contacted at 082 533 7718.

Go-cart fun at Laerskool Burgersfort Last week Friday Laerskool Burgersfort in preparation of their Winterfees the next day participated in some fun activities. The day was also attended by Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines who believes that children are the future. Ms Davida van der Walt, Communication Specialist at ECM says that investment in schools and nurturing of children is high on ECM’s priority list. The school hosted a fun go-cart day for all thepupils which formed part of a fund raiser for the school. On Saturday singer Zak van Niekerk performed at the school. Mr Whity Ludick, who is a member of the School Governing Body, approached ECM to sponsor GoCarts for the day. ECM took this request to heart and supplied the school with two go-carts and a pit crew. The children had a blast and the ECM pit crew luckily only had to repair one buckled tyre. Due to all the physical activity involved, avoidably empty cold drink cans ended up on the school field. ECM place a lot of value on keeping the environment clean and came up with a creative solution. The ECM team took along foam caps and motivated the kids to clean up the field in return for caps. The

Part of the day’s fun was the beauty contest. Anelda Beukes (grade 1 A) was the Miss Burgie Jnr. Zelda Ludick (grade 5A) was the Miss Burgie Snr. and Mohammed Tayob was the Mr Burgie Junior for 2011.

kids gladly cleaned up and were very happy to receive their caps. ECM would like to extend a word of thanks to all the volunteers who participated, and to Corne Muller from Lumcor and Kobus Coetzee from MRE who supported ECM with the transport of the go-carts.

Why are there so few women in As South Africans celebrated Women’s Day on 9 August the spotlight fell on the empowerment of women, especially in the business sector. The 2011 Women in Corporate Leadership Census of the Business Women’s Association showed that only 4.4% of chief executive and managing director positions were held by women and only 15.8% of all directorships are held by women. President Jacob Zuma, in his speech at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane said that they are worried that ”the target of 10% for women participation in mining was not met as the recent Mining Charter review has indicated. This means that more work must be done to open this sector for women”. The ANC also expressed their worries about the slow pace of empowerment of African women in the workplace. They account for only 0.8% of top management in companies. According to reports government is considering legislation to speed up the empowerment of women in the workplace. Many women have been politically empowered with 43% of the cabinet being women, but many are still economically disadvantaged. The DA, Numsa and Inkatha Freedom Party said that women must be given ways to empower themselves. Many women are not economically active due to the high cost of living, HIV, the cost of transportation and the high rate of adult unemployment (for both men and women). We asked readers whether they think better legislation would be the answer to empowering women and why they think there is still such a gap between men and women in the workplace?

Mnr. Mr German Molobela said: ‘Yes, legislation will work. If women qualify, it is right to put them in the positions. Many people think women can’t do the job, but there are some strong women out there. I encourage women to be strong and to work hard”.

Left: Mr Prince Mkhunou said: “The best way is to balance without forcing. Empower the women as many are not skilled. Take them step by step and they will end at the top. Women are not given enough chances. Some women may have the capacity but not the confidence”.

Mr Samuel Mamba said: “I think in especially production there are not enough women, but production won’t go so well with women as when men are in charge. There is a perception that women can’t do the job. Some can, some cannot’”.

Mr Johannes Masekwameng said: “I don’t think legislation will work. It must not be forced. The gap is still there because many ladies can’t do a man’s job. Like in the mines. The women can’t carry heavy things while the men can. Maybe in the offices they can hire more women than men”.

Mnr. Henry Roux en me. Leanne Payne sê: “Die maatskappye is seksisties. Mense is grootgemaak dat ‘n vrou hoort in die huis. Ons weet van baie vroue wat maatskappye run en baie suksesvol is. Daar is nie ‘n ander manier as om deur wetgewing gelykheid af te dwing nie”.

top positions in South Africa?

Ms Thelma Tebele said: “They must make the law. It is our history that makes us lag behind. A long time ago they did not recognise women. Now we have the same qualifications, attend the same schools and universities”.

Mr Amos Mkhonto said: “It will work to bring in a law. There is a perception that women are less qualified than men”.

Mnr.

Mr Jacob Tjia said: “It won’t work. A women must be in a management position because of her qualification. It is the most important thing. They do get appointed to the mines. Their most top positions are held by women. I disagree with statistics”.

Mnr.

Left: Mr Ernest Maloma and Ms Rachel Maloma said: “They must empower women. Women have the potential. Empower them with skills and the rest will happen by itself without legislation”. With them is Tetelo Maloma.

Mr Theo Nhlangulela said: “When women get the skills and do the work satisfactory, it will be good to have them in those positions. Don’t take a lesser person just to fill the position with a female candidate. Many women are still scared to go and work at the mines as it is a man’s workplace and most jobs are physically fitting men better than women”.

Buffels win at home

“We kicked off at 20:45 on Friday night against the Groblersdal rugby club – Loskop. We won 17 – 12” said Mr Charl van der Merwe this week. This was the team’s fourth consecutive win. “Keep it up lads, only two more to go!” was his message of encouragement. “Our next match is against Louis Trichardt on their grounds, and the week after that at Musina. No more home field advantage!”

Die sonpanele dra by

SPORT Fannie honoured Fannie Matshipa (33) was honoured for his outstanding performance at the 2011 Comrades Marathon. Fannie attended the evening with his wife, Granny and three children Precious (3), Lorraine and Makkie. Fannie is currently an employee of Tubatse Ferrochrome and runs in the Samancor Chrome Club colours. He finished second in the gruelling Comrades Marathon this year. Fannie will in early September be

representing South Africa at the 100km World Championships in the Netherlands. He is currently preparing for that and has been spending time with his coach, Mr John Hamlett and some other team members doing altitude training near Dullstroom. Hamlett also attended the awards evening held on Monday at Tubatse Chrome Club. Mr Desmond McManus, general manager of Tubatse Ferrochrome wished Fannie well for his trip and paid tribute to this outstanding runner. He said that Fannie has three attributes that makes him a shining example for all to follow. According to McManus Fannie is always very

humble. Fannie’s achievements have not made him think that he is better than others. He is also an example when it comes to dedication and perserverance. “Fannie, you’ve put Samancor Chrome on the map,” McManus told him. During the evening’s proceedings, Mr Asaph Morwaswi, a teacher at Mante Primary School near Steelpoort also had a chance to speak. He told the audience that as an athletics convenor at the school he saw Fannie’s talent even as a young boy. He also told Fannie that he is an inspiration to the children who now attend his alma mater. Fannie thanked everyone for their support.
