After the Red Ants in Burgersfort Ms Betty Maile said: “I’m happy. They gave us papers to move. We moved across the street after they cleaned here for us. The Red Ants brought our stuff here where we are rebuilding. I’ll be happy when they build our new stalls”. Read more on pages 2 and 3.

Hawkers moved
Ms Mahlatse Kgwedi and Ms Winnie Mashaba said: “No, we are not happy. We are not registered with the Hawkers Association but we did get a notice a few weeks back. They did not tell us the exact date we have move”. (Only hawkers registered with the recognized Hawkers Association will be considered for allocation of space in the new development. Hawkers can apply to become members at the municipality).
Mr Elmon Makhubedu said: “It was not nice. The Red Ants tried to break my container and it is not even on the development site. In the end I got to an agreement with the Red Ants, but I was not happy. I’m going to stay here on this opposite side of the road where I’ve always been when the construction is finished”. Ms Kleintjie Maphanga said: “I was not feeling happy on Tuesday. There was no business that day. We were not even able to buy a bread before going home because of what happened. We did not make any money. Now I don’t have a space. I was selling fruit and veg from a bakkie. I don’t know now. I want to move back here when the development is finished”.
Mr Thomas Masango said: “I was feeling bad when the Red Ants came. We knew we will have to move but they did not tell us when we will have to go”.
Ms Mekey Lekwana said: “We were not so happy with the municipality on Tuesday. I had been on this other side of the road all along, so I did not have to move. I’ll be happy to go and work in the new development when it is finished”.
Mr Tbishi Makofane said: “We were not surprised that we had to move, but we were so surprised by the Red Ants. They gave us notice to move. I already moved 2 weeks ago. I want to move back once they are done. They told us they will build us some shacks. I want one of those stalls they are going to develop”.
Tuesday morning Burgersfort became red. The Red Ants moved in to clear areas occupied by hawkers. This land will be used to develop formal hawker stalls and a flea market. We asked the hawkers how they experienced the move.
Mr James Fakude and Mr Andrew Thobejane said: “We are not feeling OK. We don’t know what to say. Yes, we did get notice but the municipality did not tell us about the Red Ants. The contractor told us that they will tell us the day before they start that we must move. Ja, we hope they make a nice place on that site”. Mr Pontso Mampho, Mr Matthews Mohlala and Mr Sibosiso Moloto said: “We are not feeling alright. We were surprised to see the Red Ants. We thought we were going to die. We were so afraid. The municipality did not tell us we have to move. They just came and pushed us away. Now we don’t have a plan. Maybe the municipality will show us a site to go when the construction starts”. (On Wednesday the car washers were back on the proposed development site. The municipality will not be catering for them within the development as their trade requires special drainage systems, large amounts of water and electricity for pressure systems or vacuum cleaners).

Mr Nico Mokgotho said: “It was not alright on Tuesday. Now we don’t have space to sell our fruit and veg. They are chasing us from town. We are not sure what will happen now. They told us that after 6 months we will be able to move back, so we will see”.

Making way for progress Hawkers in Burgersfort received notice to move to new areas for the development of a flea market and hawker stalls. A court order followed the offical notices and on Tuesday stalls were removed. Mr Patrick Mnisi said: “It was wrong. The Red Ants were chasing us away. They told us before that we will have to move, but they did not tell us on which date. It is too small where we are now”.
Ms Girly Baloyi and Ms Matlatso Mashaba said: “We’re feeling free because the municipality gave us notice. We are happy because the municipality will give us a nice place. We moved our stuff very fast when the Red Ants came. We were not surprised to see the Red Ants because they gave us notice”. Left: Mr Tumelo Lekubu and Mr Minolta Matenchi said: “Ja, we got notice. On that notice they did not tell us they are going to send the Red Ants. We were so worried when we saw them. We look forward to moving back once all is done”.
Mr Godfrey Mnisi said: “We don’t have a problem. The municipality wants to develop but we were surprised to see the Red Ants. Nobody had moved out when they came. They gave us notice but we did not know the exact date when we should be gone”.
Letter to the traffic chief Whity submitted photographs of traffic officers seemingly making no impression on drivers in Burgersfort. Here is his letter to the traffic chief: “Are we paying these people to control the traffic? There are three of them, two standing around and the other one has got no idea on how to do what he is paid for. Two lanes are becoming four with these so-called traffic controllers that are getting paid. In front of BOXER taxis are turning in front of all the other vehicles. They are entering and exiting the taxi rank, there is no control there and this is causing the problem at the robot under the bridge. Go to the bridge at Leopard’s Bush, where everyone is stopping at the stop and the traffic is flowing. There you will find 5 traffic officers and only one pulling off the vehicles to check their licences. The others are sitting in their cars eating. Traffic in Burgersfort is a joke. If you have a taxi you can drive the way you want to. You can stop when and where you want - just put on your hazards. You can also make u-turns anywhere in town, no problem. I am looking for a Taxi to buy, looks like this is the way to go in Burgersfort Whity, Burgersfort
Phone a friend for help? One of the three photographs Whity forwarded to the newspaper.
Mr Doctor Kgwete and Mr Simon Magabe said: “We will be happy when that development is done and we have enough space to put our stuff in the stalls on that side. We received notice, but the contractor was supposed to let us know the date when we must be gone. We are not fighting with the municipality because that development belongs to us”. Ms Emily Mmala said: “It was bad. Very bad. When I woke up I came to town to make business and to survive and provide for my children. Then the Red Ants came. We were so surprised. We were worried. That space where they will now build is too small, so I am worried there will not be enough space for everyone”.
Mr Thabo Khumalo and Mr Silas Thobejane said: “We feel bad. The way they promised us what we will get once the construction is done makes us follow the orders. There is no other way. I hope they will give us some workshop space somewhere. The municipality must look out for us with bright eyes because there is no space where we had to move now”. (Individuals doing mechanical repairs and welding are not considered hawkers by the municipality and will not be catered for in the new development. “They do a specialized job and need to find themselves a workshop to work from, “ Mr Thabiso Mokwena, Communications Manager for GTM told the newspaper).

New(ton) running shoes for Atokia On Friday last week Zola Budd-Pieterse, one of South Africa’s long distance running legends visited Laerskool Atokia. Laerskool Atokia is proud to have a large number of cross country runners and the children took the opportunity to learn from Zola. The school’s principal, Mr Beukes van Zyl introduced Zola to the children as an olympic athlete who broke world records. He added that they are too young to know much about that, but they should know that they are lucky to be in the company of a legendary athlete. Zola accompanied the tekkie manufacturers,
Newton to the school. Newton has donated running shoes to the school’s runners. Most of these children will be participting in the upcoming South African Cross Country Championships. The Letsoalao family is one of those with outstanding athletes - 7 of them will be competing at national level. Newton’s tekkies are designed to suit athletes used to running bare foot or mainly on the balls of their feet. The children were impressed with their new brightly coloured running shoes and proudly posed with Zola.
Zola had just the previous weekend finished the Comrades Marathon in her Newton running shoes. She took 7th position in the women’s race. Zola is currently residing in South Carolina with her family. Mr van Zyl thanked Zola and Newton for their effort, time and support for the children of the school. Zola gave a short motivational talk with the central message that athletes must work hard and never give up. She encouraged them to keep on training and reach for their running dreams.
