14 JANUARY 2011 The corrugated iron shack is not a tool shed or a house, but the classroom of the Grade R class of 2011 at Maepa Primary School near Ohrigstad. This year, the school has 12 learners in this class starting their school careers. The principal, Mr Steven Mkhabela ,says the school has requested better facilities and more classrooms “even mobile classrooms will be ok, but up until now, nothing is forthcoming. The rest of the school building is quite new and comprises four classrooms, with grades sharing the classrooms, except Grade 7, who have their own classroom. The corrugated iron structure was nicely furnished, and everything was ready for school and education by the Grade R teacher, Mrs Catherine Malepane. Unfortunately their wretre also no desks or space for desks in the hot little building. Luckily a cool breeze brought some relief through the large windows on the one side of the shack. Meanwhile the District Mayor and MEC for Education in Limpopo visited several schools in the area on Wednesday, functioning and non-functioning to see what is happening on ground level. They did not visit Maepa Primary School.

The little ones were quite content in their corrugated (iron) classroom (left). With then is the principal, Mr Steven Mkhabela and their educator, Mrs Catherine Malapane. The rest of the school comprises a brick building (bottom).

Catering for the children with a school It is the time of the year when many parents wish for another school in the Burgersfort area. Many children go to boarding school or have to get on a bus in the early hours of the morning to travel to school. It costs a lot in time and money. This could

however be something of the past. The well-known school group Curro are investing in Burgersfort with the construction of a modern new, affordable private model school, within Spekboom River Estate. Construction of the pre-primary, primary & secondary

school will commence in February 2011 with the first intake planned for January 2012. While the two estates are central to Cranbrook’s presence in the area, the Development Company is in Burgersfort for the long-term. The total development

encompasses a few thousand residential erven, business and light industrial development, a 43 000m² shopping mall, a hospital site, as well as the site for the new school. The school will not be limited to residents only. Enquiries: 084 403 2480.

NYDA (Limpopo) congratulates class of 2010 The National Youth Development Agency in Limpopo congratulated the 2010 matric class for the good work they have done. The NYDA in Limpopo say they have been confident from the start that the matrics were going to do the province proud. The agency called upon those that did not perform well to go back to class and work very hard, saying that it is important to remember that its is better to try than to givep. Parents, teachers and learners are encouraged to go back to class and work very hard in ensuring that even better results are produced this year, saying “when the former Limpopo Youth Commission launched ‘ MATRIC FRIDAY’ we had made commitments to the fact that we will be rolling out the back to school campaign, a further engagement with FET and Higher education institutions in ensuring that we

broaden access to higher education and advance the educating of the African child concept. As NYDA – Limpopo Chapter, we are busying finalizing details of the campaigns and have also started a process to ensuring that our provincial Universities and FETs play a major role in admitting learners who qualify. We have also ensured that a comprehensible processes is put in place in partnership with NSFAS in ensuring that students who are in need of financial assistance receive the necessary attention.” “As the National Youth Development agency – Limpopo Chapter we remain hopeful that working together with parents, teachers and learners we can produce even better results this year. We are thankful to everybody who heard our call and stood side by side with us and learners in supporting them ( 2010 matric class) during their final examination period.

Class of 2010 fares well locally Local schools in Burgersfort did not fare too bad in last year’s matric examinations, with some school turning out excellent results. One of these schools are St Thomas College in Burgersfort with a 100 percent pass rate, while Calvin College also fared very well with an overall pass rate of close to a 100 percent. A large number of individual learners has got distinctions and in the case of Calvin College most distinctions was had in Life Orientation, followed by Sepedi (Home Language), Mathematical Literacy, Accounting, Afrikaans (First Additional Language), Mathematics, Economics and Life Sciences. Joshua Generation had two matrics in 2010, both passing their examinations. Werner Smulders will start his studies for a B.Comm degree and Johan Koen will pursue studies in Theology. The District Mayor, Cllr David Mogobo Magabe, embarked on the government’s back-to-school campaign earlier this week, visiting schools in Sekhukhune District, including the Greater Tubatse Municipality. The Mayor was accompanied on his visit by senior officials of the Department of Education and members of the Mayoral Committee. The primary aim of the visits to the schools was to allow the government the opportunity to assess the readiness of schools to begin with the process of learning and teaching from the first day. Cllr Magabe also used the opportunity to encourage learners and teachers to work hard.

Eastern Chrome Mines welcome children back to school Eastern Chrome Mine (ECM) distributed pencil cases at Steelpoort Academy this week. Education is important to ECM and the cases will hopefully serve as a reminder to the pupils to work hard during the year. The mine cares about the community and their children and therefore supports the efforts by local schools to provide quality education. The children were very excited to receive such a handy gift at the beginning of the school year. The pencil case is ECM branded. It also contained various stationery items that will help the children kick-start the year.

What changes are on 2011 Kicked-off at a fast pace and some people have already forgotten their New Year’s resolutions. There are however things that we wish for that will remain for the rest of the year. Sometimes these things are within your control, but often the outcome depends on someone else. We asked readers what changes they wish for in 2011?

Ms Stephina Maile said: “I want 2011 to have less crime. There must also be job creation in Burgersfort”.

Mnr. Stefan Maree sê: “Beter paaie in Burgersfort. Ek het my kar se mags 3 dae terug afgeskryf op potholes”.

Me.

Ms. Lebo Monesa said: “I wish for better roads. Everywhere you go there is potholes. I often use the Stoffberg road and it is terrible. If you are a woman driver and you get a puncture it is very stressing”.

Mnr.

Ms. Sheena Mosekiemang said: “I wish for a shopping complex with movies and more franchise eating-out places. We also need a day-care centre on the Lydenburg side of Burgersfort”.

Mr Senior Khazamula said: “I want to become a rich man this year, if God will bless me with it”.

Mnr. Oros Brits sê: “Daar moet spietkops wees by die robotte met spitstyd. Die mense ry nes hulle wil”.

Mnr.

We’ll clean up this town’?”
