Expecting a refund? - take note Pretoria - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has implemented additional risk processes in the way that it pays out refunds to taxpayers. “It is important for taxpayers expecting a refund to note that SARS has this year implemented additional risk processes to ensure both the legitimacy and accuracy of the refunds paid. SARS has an obligation to both taxpayers as well as to the fiscus to ensure that fraudulent and invalid claims are stopped,” it said. “We are aware that taxpayers have an expectation that once they submit a return which results in a refund that this would be paid to them shortly thereafter. It must though be noted that such refunds can only be paid once all SARS processes have been concluded. SARS is committed to ensure that legitimate refunds are paid as soon as possible.” The 2017 tax season opened on 1 July 2017 for eFilers, while it opened on Monday for those filing their tax returns at SARS branches. Tax season is the single biggest annual engagement between ordinary citizens and SARS.

ECM values the health of their employees Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines hosted a flu vaccination campaign during the week of 5-9 June 2017 at their different operations. A seasonal flu shot is the single best way to protect against the flu.The flu shot works because it prompts your immune system to produce antibodies. In turn, these antibodies help the body fight off the types of flu virus that are present in the vaccine. After receiving the flu shot it takes about two weeks for these antibodies to fully develop. The campaign was managed by the Avoir group who. A total of 721 employees participated.

Community issues still high on the agenda
On Sunday this week the South African National Civics Organisation, SANCO, invited the local print media in Fetakgomo / Greater Tubatse Municipality to a meeting on Monday between community members who alleged they represent nine villages, and the Police in Burgersfort. Mr Jackson Tjatji of SANCO told the Platinum Gazette and Steelburger Lydenburg News before the meeting started on Monday that the villages were not satisfied with the lack of service delivery with regards to electrification and the fact that it looked if the municipal manager did not vacate his position after expiry of his occupational contract. “We have no confidence in the municipality, that is why we chose to come to the Police” Mr Tjatji said. Meanwhile Brigadier Risimati Robert Maluleke, Station Commissioner at Burgersfort Police Station turned the representative of the Greater Tubatse News away outside the venue at Burgersfort Police Station and then proceeded to do the same with the representatives of the two other newspapers inside the venue, saying that the media could not be involved at that stage. Platinum Gazette’s representative respectfully pointed out that the media did not invite themselves, but were invited by SANCO and will leave the meeting with SANCO’s blessing. Mr Tjatji of SANCO agreed to give the media feedback after the meeting, but this newspaper received none. The newspaper also pointed out that communities were unhappy about various issues, roads were blocked and tires were burned on a regular basis. Infighting were also going on in communities and nobody seemed to know what is going on and it seemed that nobody did anything to address the issues at hand, not the Local Municipality, political parties or the Police and that it will be in the public interest to enhance communication between various roleplayers and communities. Since then the tire burning, road blocking and chrome ore dumping have continued, while everybody were seemingly stricken with dumbness.

Calvin Street in Burgersfort is getting an upgrade to assist with the recent inflow of trucks to the nearby filling station. Trucks could not easily turn and had to climb the curb to access the fuel pumps for trucks. This resulted in broken curb stones. They also parked on the sidewalk while waiting their turn to fill up. The owners of the filling station cleared some
land opposite the business for the trucks to use as parking and turn-around space. They also started with construction to widen the road to allow better access for trucks towards the fuel pumps - a huge improvement. Hopefully these measures will reduce congestion and damage but also make it safer for learners using the road during the school term.
