SANAS accreditation for laboratory Samancor, Eastern Chrome Mines constructed and commissioned their own laboratory in 2009. The laboratory plays a key role in ensuring that product quality is on specification. In May this year, the laboratory received an assessment by the South African National Accreditation Body, who uses the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). This is a independent body capable of assessing organisations for compliance to the relevant international/national standards and verifying their appropriate competence for tasks in their scope of activities. SANAS accreditation benefits accredited organisations through an impartial assessment by

experts on their performance. After a process of six months, the ECM lab received their accreditation on 27 July 2011. On the 6 October Linda Grundling from SANAS did the formal handover to Elsie Mashishi from ECM. She highlighted that the ECM Lab is now on par with any other international accredited laboratory. She also commended the Laboratory for this tremendous achievement within such a short period of time. SHEQ Manager Frank Cotton said “ECM is very proud to have a laboratory of such high quality and is especially proud of the leadership team in the Laboratory who has lead this team to success.” He encouraged the team to keep up the good work.

Prestige for Modikwa Platinum The John T. Ryan Safety Award recognises outstanding safety practices in the mining industry. This year saw the award presented in South Africa for the first time to Modikwa Platinum Mine on 19 August with the official trophy handing ceremony at th mine, taking place on Wednesday this week. The John T. Ryan award was presented at the prestigious annual MineSAFE Awards, a joint venture between the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the Association of Mine Managers South Africa (AMMSA) and the South African Colliery Managers Association (SACMA), and with valued input from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), the Chamber of Mines, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the United Association of South Africa Unions, the event provided an opportunity for several mines to share and learn new ways of improving safety within the industry. The trophy, depicting a miner coming home to his family at the end of his shift, symbolises the importance of every life. The trophy was named after John Thomas Ryan, a mine rescue worker in the USA coal mines in the early 1900s. Ryan and George Deike, a fellow rescue worker, identified the lethal combination of methane gasses and open flame cap lamps as one of the main reasons for the high fatality rates in the mines at that time. Working with Thomas Edison, the partners developed and launched the first incandescent cap lamp that has become the forerunner of the electric cap lamp that is still used today. MSA , leading manufacturer of sophisticated safety equipment and locally represented by MSA Africa, is the official sponsor of the prestigious award. “This award pays tribute to mines that are dedicated to turning a passion for safety into success,” said Hayley Arnesen (photograph top, right) MSA’s Customer Focus Programs and Loyalty Director in Africa at the handing over ceremony at Modikwa on Wednesday. She said the

SELECT

award is fast becoming the most presitigoius in the world and it will be presented next year in four categories. She explained that the award was highly regarded and tailored for the mining industries in the different countries where it is presented. A newly established South African John T. Ryan committee, consisting of representatives from AMMSA, SACMA, SAIMM, and the Chamber of Mines, was tasked with determining which South African mine had the lowest total injury frequency rate (TIFR) during 2010. Although there was only one overall winner in 2011, in future a winner will be selected for each of the four different categories: Platinum, Gold, Coal and Diamond & Base Metals. Each of the category winners will receive a plague with the overall winner collecting the bronze floating trophy. She said the idea behind the bronze trophy is best put in the words of French Inspector General of Mines, Fredric Le Play (1806-1882): “The most important thing to come out of a mine is the miner.” After receiving the trophy, Modikwa Platinum Mine’s Business Leader (in the bottom photograph getting assistance with the heavy floating trophy), Mandla Nxumalo, told the audience and representatives of MSA that Modikwa realises it has a massive challenge ahead to maintain the safety record that made it a trophy winner. He also acknowledged the role of his predecessor, Sean O’Connor, in establishing the solid base for safety at Modikwa with the rest of the personnel. He also said he not only spoke on behalf of the company, but also the unions and contractors who individually play crucial roles in the mine’s safety record. He expressed the vision at every mine in South Africa’s safety record should be worthy of the trophy Modikwa just received.

Breast Cancer

Advertorial

Breast cancer, as the name suggests, is a cancer that affects the breasts or mammary glands. It is the second most popular cancer after lung cancer and is the fifth most common cause of deaths due to cancer worldwide. Breast cancer incidence increases with age; the older the woman, the more chances of being dignosed with breast cancer. Nevertheless, younger women with breast lumps are at a far greater risk for breast cancer in comparison to asymptomatic women of the same age group, and to older women. Contrary to popular belief that it is a woman’s affliction, it can affect both men and women. Breast cancer can be inherited both from either a female or a male relative who may have had the disease or who acts as a carrier of the mutant gene(s). Breast cancer, like other forms of cancer, is considered to be the final outcome of a legion of environmental and hereditary factors. However, the exact cause is not known. It is suspected that more than one factor is involved. Also the risk of breast cancer increases, as a woman gets older

Common signs & symptoms of breast cancer include: ·

·

·

A change in how the breast or nipple feels You may experience nipple tenderness or notice a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area. A change in how the breast or nipple looks. This could mean a change in the size or shape of the breast or a nipple that is turned slightly inward. In addition, the skin of the breast, areola or nipple may appear scaly, red or swollen or may have ridges or pitting that resembles the skin of an orange. Nipple discharge

An Early Breast Cancer Detection Plan should include: · · · · · · ·

Beginning at age 20: Performing breast self-exams and looking for any signs of change. Age 20 to 39: Scheduling clinical breast exams every three years. By the age of 40: Having a baseline mammogram and annual clinical breast exams. Ages 40 to 49: Having a mammogram every one to two years depending on previous findings. Ages 50 and older: Having a mammogram every year. All Ages: Maintaining a healthy weight, following a low-fat diet, getting regular exercise, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.

Have you been counted in Census 2011? From 10 October 2011 until the end of the month 120 000 census workers will go knocking on doors to collect information from 13 million households in South Africa. The Presidency this week said: “This will enable us to know how many people there are in South Africa, where they stay, what they do, how many are employed and how many are struggling to get jobs. They will check access to water, education, sanitation and other services. This information will tell us as government how far we have come and how far we still need to travel to ensure a better quality of life for all. ” Reports about attacks where the robbers pretended to be census workers, made many people nervous about opening up their homes to the Statistics South Africa workers. The public can however verify that the person standing at the door is who he or she claims to be. Each worker will have an identification card, with a photograph and ID number on. These cards cannot be tampered with to change photographs. The workers will request a telephone number from the person they visit if they leave the form behind to be completed. According to Ms Tracy Daniels of the Census 2011 Enquiry Centre, people are not required to invite the workers into their homes. They can answer through a security gate or fence or can fill the form in themselves and have it collected the next day. The census workers are on the road between 08:00 to 20:00. All the questions on the form must be completed and although some questions such as an income bracket may seem personal, they are intented to determine the wealth of a specific area etc. This will be seen in conjuction with questions such as the appliances you use e.g. microwave or refrigerator. To get more information on Census 2011 contact 0800 110 248. We asked readers if they’ve been counted this first week and how they feel about Census 2011.

Mr ZP Mkhebe said: “They’ve not been to my house yet. I’ll serve them and not waste their time. It is important to get everyone counted”.

Me. Charmaine van der Gryp sê: “Nee, hulle was nog nie by my nie. Daar is geen nut aan die tellery nie. Hoe weet ek in elk geval dis regte sensus mense wat klop? Daar is soveel bedrog. As hulle by my kom moet hulle maar die vorm los ek sal dit self invul”.

Mnr. By hom is me. Lettie Reyneke.

Me.

Mr Dumis Madalane and Mr Desmond Makwana said: “They’ve not been to us yet. We only see cars driving around with yellow stickers and we are waiting for them - patiently. We want to be part of history and we want to know the statistics of South Africa. Yes, it is important to count the people as it reflects in the budgets for service delivery - not the estimate, but the real statistics. We will not be afraid to open our doors”. Regs: Mnr. Victor Fourie sê: “Nee, hulle was nog nie by my nie. Ek gaan nie vir hulle oopmaak nie. Ek gaan net nie die deur antwoord nie. Daar is te veel kriminele wat voorgee hulle is sensusmense. Ja, dit is seker belangrik om getel te word, maar hulle veg ‘n verlore stryd”. By hom is Magdaleen Fourie.

Mr Tumai Mago said: “Yes, they’ve been to my door. Then they realized that I am a Zimbabwean and they just count South Africans. They must know how many people are in the country to plan for job creation”.

Mr Kuziva Nyamuroma said: “They’ve not been there yet. I am waiting for them. They will help make a better budget for us when they know how many people are in the country. They will know how much food to put on the table”.

Regs:Mnr. Donovan Swart sê: “Nee, hulle was nog nie by my nie. Ek sal oopmaak. Dis belangrik dat die mense getel word”.

Ms Anna Muso said: “No, I’ve not been counted. Ja, I will let them in, no problem. Yes, it is important to get counted”.
