The Municipal Electoral Office in Burgersfort in the old municipal building was a hive of activity on Wednesday. Candidate lists for the elction (Proportional Representation and Wards) were put up on the notice board on the outside of the building where the public can go and have a look at who they want to vote for. These list were also available on the IEC’s website on Wednesday, but by Thursday were removed again, but will probably again be available soon. In the mean time election placards of political parties has started to appear all over town and in the rest of the municipality, promising a heated fight. What Platinum Gazette could gather from

what it could see on the candidates’ lists on the IEC website before it became temporarily unavailable online, was that political parties in the municipal area registered their candidates with vigour, with old enemies, and new ones appearing on the lists. They will now go and try to get voters to vote for them on 18 May. The list of Proportional Representative from which voters can pick, spans about seven pages of names, indicating that opposition parties was not deterred by the result of the 2006 election and hope for a better performance this time. If you are tired of the people representing you at this time, now is the time to make a change, if you are registered to vote on 18 May 2011.
Brigalia Bam says: ‘Be tolerant’ Speaking at a ceremony earlier this week where the leaders of political parties were to sign the Electoral Code of Conduct, the Eelection Head said she hoped the disappointment of those not elected “will not lead to anything that is negative”. “Without multiparty tolerance we will slide into the tyranny of the majority. Each political party must be willing to compromise and work together.” Bam said a survey conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission had revealed that more South Africans than ever intended voting in this election. She said South Africans were highly politicised and would closely watch the May 18 elections, which will be the third since the country became a democracy in 1994. This year, 53 596 candidates and 121 parties would contest the elections, compared to the 45 179 candidates and 97 parties in 2006. Leaders present at the ceremony included the Democratic Alliance’s Helen Zille, the Inkatha Freedom Party’s Mangosuthu Buthelezi and the Freedom Front Plus’s Pieter Mulder. It was not clear who would sign the pledge for the ANC as the party’s representative had not arrived at the start of proceedings.

SDM concludes IDP consultation process The Sekhukhune District Municipality has concluded its IDP consultations for 20112016 on Tuesday 12th April 2011. The last sessions were held in Winterveld outside Steelpoort and involved the business people, mining houses and labour formations. The consultations, which started on the 22nd March 2011, saw the Executive Mayor of the District Municipality Cllr Mogobo David Magabe together with his team visiting more than fifty villages across the district and a variety of stakeholders. The Executive Mayor and his team including local mayors, members of mayoral committee and councilors engaged communities around critical issues of development such as ongoing and new infrastructural projects (water, sanitation, roads, electricity, landfill sites etc). “As we mark the end of this process, we need to take stock of the challenges confronting our people. Indeed Government has done much to uplift the standard of living of our people, but we acknowledge that more still need to be done”, said the
Executive Mayor Cllr Mogobo David Magabe. “The people have spoken and government has listened. Now is the time for us to implement the turn-around strategy and deliver quality services to our people. We are fully committed to work with our people as we have done during the apartheid past and in our current democratic regime” said the Executive Mayor Cllr Mogobo David Magabe. The district has a budget of R879 million for the financial year 2011-2012. It is clear that we need to allocate more resources to water as it represent the most critical challenge. An amount of 141 million has been put aside for water. It is worth noting that the IDP consultations where not a smooth ride.At some villages in Greater Tubatse Municipality some communities disrupted meetings complaining about issues ranging from relationships with councilors and mines. Finally, the district municipality believes that the legacy of centuries of apartheid can’t be undone in seventeen years of democracy and freedom.

Five years fatality free operations at Modikwa Platinum “The avoidance of fatal accidents starts with reducing the number of incidents and lost time injuries”. Modikwa Platinum Mine is pleased to announce the achievement of Five (5) years Fatality Free at 06:00 on the 12th April 2011. Modikwa became the county leaders and joined the ranks of a select few mines in South Africa when they achieved 7 000 000 fatality free shifts in September 2010. This has now been improved to the major milestone of five (5) years fatality free. Added to this remarkable achievement Modikwa has been notified by the Department of Mineral Resources that we have been awarded the DMR Safety Achievement Flag for Platinum Mines which will be proudly flow at Modikwa throughout 2011. This huge safety success is attributable to the diligent adherence to standards and the practicing of one of the Modikwa core values “of caring for each other”. Excellent communication and understanding by employees and by the
Unions and Associations on the reduction of risks and elimination of unsafe acts, and the working together with the relevant Governmental departments played a major role, but, ultimately the reward for this safe performance goes to the employees in that they have not injured themselves, and in making Modikwa a safe mine to work at, they enjoy the benefits. The avoidance of fatal accidents starts with reducing the number of incidents and lost time injuries. This in turn reduces the serious injuries and ones that can easily become fatal. Thus there has been an all round improvement in the general safety on the mine indicated by the measurement of incident free days per month which have already exceeded 77% being incident free! Modikwa currently sits on some 7 800 000 Fatality free shifts with the projection of 8 000 000 Fatality Free Shifts being attained in Mid June 2011.

When all is not going so well For driver Archie Rutherford and his codriver Mike Lawrenson things did not go according to plan. By the time the team reached spectator point number 11 on the first leg they had serious problems on various systems on their vehicle. They made a quick stop to talk to their family/support team who promptly let the team waiting in the pits know about it. They had to retire after the first leg.

To give them two days more or not? The Department of Education has allowed schools to take the two work days falling on March 28 and 29 off. This will result in an Easter Holiday stretching from Good Friday on 22 April until 3 May 2011. Schools for the second term started this week and will be open less than two weeks before the Easter long weekend will arrive. According to the Education Department’s spokeperson, Granville Whittle, the schools that are taking the time off are required to submit a plan to the Department to indicate how they will make up for the lost time. We asked readers how they felt about these two days of holiday for learners and teachers. We also asked what their plans for the rest period will be.
Mr Zakes Mtsweni said: “That one is not good. Especially matrics should put in some extra effort. There should be no school closures. They also need winter classes because be want good results”.
Mr Ben Sibindi said: “They should go to school. Last year they wasted time with the World Cup. Now they must go to school - even on Saturdays. It is not so long then it is the June holidays again”.
Mnr. Louis Pieterse sê: “Dit kan goed of sleg wees. Hulle sal minder werk in kry, maar dis lekker vir die kinders. Ek gaan daardie tyd Groblersdal toe”.
Mr David Matemane said: “They should be going to school on those days. The public servants are already disagreeing on an increase of 4.8% and are about to go on strike, so they must not lose any more days”.
Mr Daniel Moshoana said: “It is not a good thing. The Easter Holidays are too long. It will make us lag behind. Those days should have been used to make up for time lost”. Mr Moshoana is a teacher and principal.
Ms Shadi Phasha said: “It is a problem. They should go to school. We will be going to church”.
Me Liezl Kirchner sê: “Nee, hou vakansie! Wat gaan nog 2 dae verskil maak? Ons sal seker weggaan”.
Ms. Nakedi mashiloane said: “I don’t support it. We’ve already lost a lot of time. They may not be able to cover the syllabus. April has so many holidays already”.
Mr Thomas Mdhlala said: “They are just teaching the kids to be lazy. They’ve just come back from a 2 weeks break”.
Ms Hellen Selahle (left) and Ms Eniccah Maimela said: “It is good. We are not going to spend money for pocket money for the children”. With them is Terry Bopape who will enjoy his days off from school.
Me.
By hom is Erise en Elisma.

Modikwa athletes run at Mponeng mine The Mining news 10km road race took place at Mponeng mine in Carletonville last weekend. Modikwa Marathon club was well represented at the annual race, where many of the mining houses’ teams compete. This very fast paced race was won by a Goldfields runner, kicking gold dust in everybody else’s eyes as the slogan on the running vest states. Peter Molapo again came in under the top 20 and said the fast pace of the shorter distance specialist was too fierce for him. All the other team members came in under 45min showing they are well on the way in the training for this year’s Comrades Marathon. The team will be in action at this weekend’s Loskop Marathon, from Middelburg to Loskop Right: Peter Molapo
dam, a 50km ultra Marathon. The teams would like to thank everybody for the great support they receive from Modikwa. “We would like to wish them best of luck for this weeks race!” management said. (All photographs: Willem Montgomery)
