Leboeng village, between Ohrigstad and Strydom Tunnel, was abuzz last week Saturday when Leboeng Police held their annual Women’s Day contests between nine schools in the area. The event is also meant as an anti-crime initiative and proved itself over the years a huge hit with the surrounding communities, especially with the included Miss SAPS Leboeng competition which is hotly contested. As usual the ballroom dancing (left) is also high on the agenda. More about the event on page 6. (Photograph supplied by constable Andrew Maimela Sibatana of Leboeng SAPS).
EVRAZ sells 34% to local partner EVRAZ plc (the company that also own Mapochs Mine at Roossenekal) has signed an agreement to sell 34% of the issued share capital of EVRAZ Highveld Steel and Vanadium Ltd to Macrovest 147 Proprietary Limited R289 million. It has been agreed that Macrovest will also refinance 50% of the outstanding working capital facility provided by EVRAZ plc. The purchaser of the shares, Macrovest, is led by Barend Petersen, a chartered accountant with significant local and global experience. Mr Petersen is the executive chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines, and a nonexecutive director of De Beers Group, Ponahalo Group, Anglo American South Africa, Alexander Forbes, Curro Holdings as well as Sizwe Business Recoveries which he founded in 1998. He is also the chairman of the Environment Community Occupational Health and Safety Committee of De Beers Group. Alexander Frolov, EVRAZ CEO, said the sale of such a significant
interest in Highveld to a local strategic investor is an important step to ensure sustainable development of Highveld as South Africa’s leading steel and vanadium business. “We have analysed various options for the further development of Highveld and decided to introduce a strong local partner, who we believe will add significant value and expertise in developing our South African asset in a challenging market. As a result of the transaction, EVRAZ will remain a 51% shareholder of Highveld and continue to focus on growing operating efficiency and profit enhancing initiatives.” EVRAZ is a vertically integrated steel, mining and vanadium business with operations in the Russian Federation, Ukraine, USA, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Kazakhstan and South Africa. EVRAZ is among the top 20 steel producers in the world based on crude steel production of 16,1 million tonnes in 2013. EVRAZ employs approximately 100 000 people.

Like a rock or not? The government’s sanitation programme in villages is progressing well and everywhere in villages, new toilets, such as these can be seen. This particular toilet, was posted by well known local marathon runner, Daniel Makua, on his Facebook page (three times), saying that he is thankful for the new facility at his house in GaMampuru, except that it is about to fall in on him and his family. While travelling in the area Platinum Gazette has seen others that do not look very stable. Maybe extra care should be taken when ensuring the sturdiness during construction?
Lanes and (illegal) lanes into the sunset Three lanes where only two are supposed to be. Burgersfort’s traffic remains a problem, but also give time to appreciate a nice sunset. When the Platinum Gazette’s editor exclaimed to a number of traffic cops gridlocked like everybody else (but in the opposite direction) “You should start
working!” they hit back with “what are you saying?” to great entertainment of a taxi with about 50 passengers inside, who burst out laughing in unison. (In their defence, they did work, quickly sorting out a problem of spilt paint in the middle of the road, getting the mass moving again).

Approximately 90% of adults are infected with the virus that causes cold sores - although only about 40% may experience an outbreak
Thabiso Mogakane is your friendly pharmacist at Greater Tubatse Pharmacy.
Cold sores are small, painful blisters that usualy occur on or around your lips. They are often called fever blisters. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus which you can get through kissing, sharing dishes, towels or utensils with someone who’s infected. Cold sores usually clear on their own after a week or two, but anti-viral creams that can be applied as soon as you feel the tingle of them starting to appear, and this can usually speed up the healing process. Sun exposure and stress are factors that can help trigger flare-ups of the virus. It often accompanies flu or colds when the body’s immune system is at a low. Trying to cover the cold sores with make-up can sometimes just cause it to get worse as the chemicals in makeup can aggrevate the problem. It can help to get a new toothbrush after the blisters have cleared up as toothbrushes can harbour the virus. To help prevent flare-ups you can use sunscreen or lipstick with a sun protection factor of 15 or higher. Ask your friendly pharmacist about over the counter treatments available to help with the problem. You can also get booster vitamins from your pharmacy to help build a strong immune system.
