The election is coming: you still have time to register

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced during the State Of the Nation Address (SONA) that the country will go to the polls on 08 May this year. On that day registered voters will have the opportunity to vote for the parties and candidates they want to govern them. The guys with the most votes win, be they crooks or not, you decide - that is democracy. But you must be registered, and to effect that you must visit your nearest IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) office before the election is formally proclaimed by a Proclamation. That proclamation is only expected by the end of February 2019 according to the IEC’s twitter account.

Run! Schools in the area are wrapping up their athletics programmes for the year. This photograph was taken at Laerskool Burgersfort last week Saturday when the school hosted a friendly competion. At that stage Eskom’s loadshedding did not disrupt as much as this week when even schools were severely affected by the lack of electricity. Said one teacher “We have a health risk you know. We do not have water as the pumps are not working. Children cannot wash their hands after they went to the toilet. It is a problem ...”

Minister withdraws Electronic Communications Amendment Bill The Electronci Communications Amendment Bill was this week withdrawn by the Minister of Communications, Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams. The Bill would have had far reaching implications for a variety of areas, including copyright. Ms Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, participated in a meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Telecommunications and Postal Services. The committee deliberated on the Electronic Communications Amendment Bill, which was tabled before Parliament in October 2018, followed by public hearings involving various stakeholders including the regulated firms. This was the first engagement between Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams and the Committee in her current responsibility as Minister. In her contribution, the Minister indicated that the Ministry of Communications has been mandated to spearhead and lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution, working with other stakeholders within and outside government. “Expansion of the Ministry’s mandate and the reconfigured department has implications for policy and legislation as we are now required to think anew; of course building on the advances of the past 25 years of democratic regulation”, said Minister-Ndabeni-Abrahams. She further mentioned that, “the Fourth Industrial Revolution is in our midst which calls for us to rethink our approach to everything we do, including the kind of institutions that will lead and enable the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” With regards to the specific issues raised in the report of the Committee on the Bill, the Minister informed the Committee that these would be considered as part of further consultations with the stakeholders. Further, given the fact that Parliament was unlikely to finalise the Bill during the remainder of the current term, the Minister informed the Committee of her decision to withdraw it.”

Arrests made for murder and kidnapping On Friday last week two men appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on charges of kidnapping, murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and the possession of suspected stolen property. According to a police report the suspects are aged 24 and 28 and were arrested on 7 February after an extensive crime intelligence driven operation. The investigation was launched after 36-year old Precious Mohlale Magagane went missing on 23 December 2018. The remains believed to be that of Precious Mohlale Magagane was recovered and will now be subjected to DNA analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory. The SAPS also recovered a 9mm pistol, ammunition and a motor vehicle. A cell phone belonging to the deceased was also recovered from the vehicle. The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers commended all members involved in solving the case and thanked members of the community for providing valuable information. The suspects are due to appear in court again on 15 February 2019 and had been remanded in custody. Last week their appearance in court caused community members to gather outside the court in anticipation of the suspects’ appearance. (Information: South African Police Service).

Renovations and improvements of approximately a quarter million rand will make the lives of children at Rehlahleng Special School much safer and easier.

Before the project some areas had no ceiling and many windows were broken.

The kitchen also received a make-over with large cracks being repaired and new stoves installed. Unsafe electrical fittings posed a danger. This was replaced and is now safe to use. New beds, matresses and blankets were also delivered.

amancor, Eastern Chrome Mines came to the aid of Rehlahleng Special School in Ga-Mampuru with renovations and improvements that was long overdue. The school takes care of approximately 150 children of various ages with special needs. The school teaches and develop skills like sewing and art, while providing a safe haven. The school approached Samancor ECM for assistance last year. Although this project is not part of the formal SLP of the mine, the company decided to assist as far as possible. With the help of some of the mine’s contractors like Sylvania, SSG, Sepedisana, GHH and Epiroc the buildings quickly received a make-over. A large number of broken windows were replaced, ceilings replaced and in some of the accommodation facilities installed for the first time. Lights were installed, broken ones replaced and fittings fixed. Bathrooms were renovated and adapted to better serve the needs of people with special physical needs. The kitchen also received attention with new stoves and the fixing of gas burners. A large number of bunk beds, blankets and matresses were purchased and delivered to the school. A new coat of paint finished off the renovated look. On Monday, 11 February 2019, the completed renovation project was officially handed

over. The children performed various items for the guests, including ‘Special Star’ by Mango Groove. Mr Pieter Brits, HR Manager of Samancor ECM said that these children are all special stars in their own way and the educators and caregivers too. He encouraged them to shine and continue to make a difference. He emphasized that Samancor ECM values education and sees it as a way to improve communities and the future of the area. The school staff, SGB, Ga-Mampuru Development Forum and representative from the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality thanked and praised ECM and its contractors for the work and care taken with the project.

How do you experience the load shedding? This week South Africans were hit by the most severe bout of load shedding from Eskom ever. The power utility declared stage 3 and 4 load shedding that saw some areas without electricity, two and a half hours at a time, for up to three times a day. Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan told Parliament’s Public Enterprises Committee on Wednesday that he hopes Eskom will come to grips with the latest load shedding problems. Consumers can however expect interruptions in electricity supply until at least April. Mismanagement and corruption as well as the loss of skilled labour are part of the cause of the current problems. “Government is very aware that apart from causing traffic jams and huge amounts of frustration in major cities, this is also a bad signal as far as investment in our economy is concerned.” To assist in sorting out Eskom’s maintenance problems top engineers from Italian energy company Enel will be coming to South Africa. Last week during the State of the Nation Address, President Ramaphosa announced that Eskom will be split into two entities. One that will own and operate the national grid’s electricity distribution and one that will be responsible for supply of electricity. On Wednesday Eskom announced that they are technically insolvent and that the R420 billion debt burden is a major risk to the South African economy. If the current situation do not change, the company could fail to exist by April. Platinum Gazette asked readers how they are feeling about the latest load shedding experience and how they cope with it.

Ms Shadi Eunitaid Marebane said: “I’m doing nails and this week my business is not going well because we need electricity to dry the nails with the UV-lamp. Government must do something with this load shedding because it is very bad”.

Ms Refi Mohlala said: “I’m stuggling. I cannot cook and I cannot study at night. I now use candles and feel government must make a plan”.

Ms Orpha Phala said: “We are struggling with the load shedding, especially in the schools. We cannot make photocopies for the learners when there is no electricity. We can also not pump water. Learners go thirsty, they must wash their hands and dishes must be washed after they were given food. It is also a problem at home. I have to buy candles and cooking is a problem because we don’t have generators”.

Ms Selina Moshitoa said: “It affects us very badly. The refrigerator starts to smell when the electricity goes off. The meat goes bad. There is also a shortage of water because we cannot pump. It is so hot here and we cannot live without water. Water is life. We now live in the dark. We are afraid of the snakes and scorpions in the dark and we don’t have candles”.

Mr Hamilton Mdluli said: “It is affecting us and our businesses. I’m selling frozen juices on the street, but when the electricity goes off, it melts and I cannot sell the liquid like that. Government must make a plan. We heard that there is a machine they did not fix in time. They must make plans so that we can continue with our businesses”. Ms Nanny Magabane said: “Business wise it is affecting our sales. We work on a target and when our customers come and there is no electricity we cannot help them. At home it often goes out in the middle of my cooking. This is just too much. We will have to go solar. If it goes on like this we won’t know what electricity is – we’ll go to gas and solar power”. With her are Glad Bokeng and Gladwin Bohlale.

The Matsepane family said: “The refrigerator is a problem. The food goes rotten. Appliances get damaged and our children also cannot properly do homework or study. There is a lot of disturbances because of load shedding. We cook on gas, but we cannot pump water or use the fans and it is very hot. We have a chicken business and it is a problem. They cannot eat in the dark. This business of no electricity affects our lives, our schools and our businesses negatively”. Mr Botsotso Mohlala and Mr Bemosa Motedi said: “It’s really bad. It is something we’ve never experienced like this before. We cannot record or produce music and it is our business. Entrepreneurs are struggling enough as it is. School kids cannot bath in hot water and if you did not cook before the electricity went off, you cannot eat”. Mr Ephraim Ngele said: “We cannot eat because we cannot cook. In schools nothing can happen. There are no tests because we cannot make copies of question papers and other materials. Our fridges get damaged and the TV too. We are scared to use candles because the kids are small and don’t know how to handle them and Mr Melvin (Rooney) Seroka said: “My they can cause a fire that sister suffered because she could not can damage the house. do her assignment for school because We cannot cook too early we had no candles. It was dark. The to have food because it is businesses cry about the crime as very hot here and then the well. The alarms don’t always work food goes off and we get without electricity. Will Eskom now food poisoning”. replace what they’ve lost?”

SPORT Tyron and Thinus Mango Mania 40km done and dusted fly the Chrome Golf Club flag high Local golf players participated in the Limpo Closed Stroke Play Championship last weekend. Tee-off times started at 07:00 at Polokwane Golf Club to find the champion golfer in Limpopo. 64 players competed from all over the province in the province’s top stroke play event. The scene was set for a tough battle as some familiar faces made their return to the provincial level. The course was playing tough with some extra deep rough after the good rains the club had and the set-up was sure to challenge the players on a different level. The weather played along nicely with no rain or excessive heat predicted. The morning started off well with Tyron Luck from Chrome Golf Club in Steelpoort taking the lead after the first 9 holes on 2 under par 34 with Johan Geldenhuys from Polokwane Golf Club close behind him on 1 under par 35 and Neil Rathmann from Polokwane Golf Club together with Thinus Labuschagne from Chrome Golf Club on level par 36. After 18 holes it was a similar story with Tyron Luck still in the lead with level par 72 after a bogey on the 17th to finish the back nine with 38. He was joined by Thinus Labuschagne and and Neil Rathmann as the clubhouse leaders after the first 18. Players enjoyed lunch and a short rest as the sun came out and the humidity climbed a little bit. It started getting hot and it looked like the tough layout started taking its toll on some of the players. First in the clubhouse the afternoon was Tyron Luck on 2 over par with a very unfor-

Jannie and Sanet Oosthuizen participated in the Mango Mania MTB Race in Hoedspruit on Saturday last week. They finished the 40km race in a respectable 2 hours and 33 minutes. “The race was well organised and race markers were very clear and easy to follow,” said Jannie. After completing the race, riders were treated to Mango tasting - big, small, hairy and much more with all the necessary information to make the mango tasting a must do. tunate double bogey 6 on the 18th hole the last hole of the day. He was soon overtaken by his fellow Chrome Golf Club member Thinus Labuschagne on 1 over par 145. Then came the two Polokwane Golf Club members, Jannie Bronkhorst and Johan Geldenhuys who fought hard for their level par 144 scores. But the afternoon round belonged to Hans Merensky Wildlife Estate member, Hardus Schoeman who came in with a 64 in the afternoon round. Hardus made 9 birdies and 1 drop shot for his 8 under par score witch gave him a total of 5 under par 139 to be crowned the Limpopo Champion Golfer of the year 2019. Hardus felt he had a fair amount of luck to shoot 64, but like Jean Sadie, Head Professional at Polokwane Golf Club says, “you still have to make the putts”.
