Gazette RAL upbeat about roads Fresh from successful participation at the 2018 Investing in African Mining Indaba that ended this week in Cape Town, the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) will host a stakeholder engagement and fundraising session with the mining industry in the Sekhukhune District Municipality of Limpopo Province. The event is scheduled for toaday Friday, 16 February 2018 at Lapeng Guest Lodge in Burgersfort (Platinum Gazette sincerely hopes the RAL delegation approach the lodge from the Steelpoort direction so that they can first-hand experience what needs attention). The session is an opportunity which will not only benefit RAL, but mines and communities. “It is therefore important that we join hands in ensuring that this and other future relationship-building sessions or events become a success,� says RAL CEO Maselaganye Matji. RAL is reaping the benefits of its resourceful association with the mining Industry. In 2015, the then new RAL Board and Executive management of the Agency led by the Board Chair, Matome Ralebipi and CEO Maselaganye Matji, adopted a strategic Partnership approach as part of the successful turnaround strategy for the Agency that was just returned from administration. Through this approach, RAL is targeting to create partnerships with the private sector relevant or benefiting from the Limpopo Provincial road infrastructure network to help augment its constrained budgetary and financial resources for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of Limpopo roads. This partnership includes both RAL and the private sector co-funding key economically strategic road infrastructure projects in the Limpopo Province. The mining sector, particularly, has been the flagship of this approach. Since adopting this strategic partnership approach, RAL has raised more than R380 million and continues to secure more partnerships. R100 million is the amount targeted for the current financial year. According to Matji, more than attracting new partners, RAL wants to strengthen its relations with the existing ones, hence their recent participation at the Mining Indaba, and these stakeholder engagement events. At the recent Mining Indaba, the Agency engaged and strengthened its relationships with current strategic partners in various projects, amongst others De Beers, Exarro, Ledjadja Coal and PPC Cement. RAL has been mandated to manage, control, plan, develop, and maintain the provincial road network on behalf of the Limpopo provincial government. The road asset portfolio of RAL measures in the extent of 20 260 kilometres (km), of which only 5 974 km is tarred and the balance of 14 286km is gravel or dirt roads.

Jewellery thieves flee after high speed chase On Monday morning the SAPS Provincial Tracking Team gave chase after a trio crime syndicate robbed one of the jewellery stores in Tubatse Crossing Mall on Monday morning.
Three men allegedly entered the shop with weapons and fled on foot before allegedly leaving town in a bakkie at high speed. The suspects took the R555 but was met by a Tracking Team who was informed of the
robbery. The Tracking Team tried to pull over the vehicle with the suspects. The suspects fired shots and the SAPS members retaliated. During the high speed chase that ensued the driver of the suspects’ bakkie lost control of the vehicle near the Eerstegeluk turn-off. The suspects all fled from the scene of the accident into the bushes and managed to evade arrest. Jewellery worth thousands of rands taken during the robbery was recovered. The vehicle used by the suspects was reported stolen on Friday last week. It was allegedly taken during a house robbery. The SAPS appealed to the public to come forward with any information that can lead

DCM launches new SMME Portal Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) launched their new SMME Portal on Thursday, 8 February 2018. The event took place at Chrome Valley Lodge and was well supported by local SMME representaƟves. DCM previously shared a portal with other mines, but the decision was taken last year to create a dedicated domain for the mine. This makes it possible for suppliers to be up to date with tenders,
site visits and other informaƟon. Suppliers can register on the new domain or suppliers who had previously registered on the old portal can check that their details are correct and up to date. The portal will assist in making sure that there is properly controlled communicaƟon flow between DCM’s supply chain and SMME suppliers. Legal documentaƟon such as Tax Clearance CerƟficates, BEE CerƟficate and more is uploaded onto the portal with the contact details, type of business in which the supplier is etc. The system will also give warnings when cerƟficates are due to expire and new ones are required to be uploaded. When a quotaƟon is required for specific work on the mine, the supply chain will through the portal communicate with SMME suppliers. They will receive both sms and e-mail communicaƟon with regards to requests for quotaƟons. There is no cost involved with registering on the portal. The portal system’s developer, Mr Kabelo Mzolo demonstrated the process of registering with a business on the portal through a presentaƟon as well as a step-by-step run through on portal itself. This was shown on the big screen and suppliers aƩending the
day could take notes or ask quesƟons aŌerwards. The security of the portal system has also been upgraded to ensure that supplier informaƟon is protected. Some of the important things that was underlined during the day’s session included the importance of attaching all the required documentaƟon, making sure that you respond within 3 days of receiving communicaƟon requesƟng a quotaƟon and properly indicaƟng the types of business your company or cooperaƟve is doing. These fields are important as the mine will only communicate quotaƟon requests according to their needs and what was indicated. For example, a company doing construcƟon work will not receive invitaƟons to quote for catering or cleaning work. The new portal will replace the old database DCM had and provide streamlined communicaƟon with small suppliers. All local SMMEs are welcome to register on the portal domain (even those who were not at the event last week are welcome to register). To register visit www.dcmssmeportal.co.za and follow the instrucƟons to register as a new user. AlternaƟvely log into the portal as a previously registered user with your old password and details. Be sure to update any outdated informaƟon and provide the correct contact details so you can benefit from the new line of communicaƟon set to make it easier to know about tenders and quotaƟons.

The day ended with a warm lunch and an opportunity to network with different stakeholders.

Calvinites compete
Steelies making the school proud Athlethics High school learners participated in the circuit athletics event at Phalaborwa las week. Danie Grobler was second in the 100m and shot put u/15; Thato Makakola was first in the 1500m and fourth in the 100m; Katlego Choma was second in 100m hurdles.
Calvin Prep School hosted their inter house athletics on Friday last week. The learners participated in different track and field items while singing and team spirit was judged on the pavillion. The school’s two teams, the Lions and the Tigers faced off during the day’s competition.

Modikwa runners flying the flag high The Modikwa Platinum Mine Athletics Club athletes are very busy preparing for some of the bigger races waiting later in the year. Last weekend one of the runners, Mokaila Lawrence Tjia participated in the Pick n Pay Marathon’s 42,2km race. “The race was very exciting. It was well organised with cloudy weather” he said.
Tjia finished the race in 04:10:20 and was proud to receive his runners’ medal. Herman Mogale, another Modikwa Athletics Club athlete ran the Klerksdorp Marathon on 10 February 2018. This marathon counts as an official qualifier for the Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon and the Comrades Ultra Marathon later in the year. Runners wishing to participate in these marathons are required to prove that their level of fitness is good enough to eventually finish these gruelling races. Only selected marathons in every province count as Comrades and Two Oceans qualifiers. The qualifying cut off time for this race was five hours, while athletes were given an alotted time of six hours to finish the race (although without qualification). Both Modikwa athletes thanked the Club and management for the support they receive in their running efforts.
