Seven treated after shots at strike

Focus was put on National Water Week Celebrations when schools in the vicinity of the new De Hoop Dam visited the visitors centre on site where they were introduced to a new innovative project of Dwarsrivier Mine to conserve the environment (see pages 6 and 7 in this issue) while they were also treated with a visit to the construction site itself. When returning from the dam wall, they were suprised to see the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, emerge from a helicopter at the visitors centre. After a short sojourn at the visitors centre (and a meal for the learners) the minister, local politicians and officials (and their entourages) departed for Ga-Malekana next to the steel bridge at the Jane Furse turn-off from the R555 to meet the community (bottom photograph). More about the celebrations on page 2.

Seven members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) were treated at Modikwa Clinic early yesterday shortly after union members started a strike in protest against various employment issues, inter alia, salary increases at Modikwa Platinum Mine. The chairperson of NUM at Modikwa, mr Silence Matsepane says a strike certificate has been issued to the union by the CCMA on 9 March and a notice of the strike was issued to the mine in due time. Platinum Gazette could because of deadline constraints not attent the NUM members’ gathering at the mine yesterday, but according to Mr Matsepane union members were peacefully “jumping around” outside the mine’s entrance when the Police allegedly shot at them with rubber bullets. As a result seven union members had to be treated at the clinic. Mr Matsepane told the newspaper just before going to press that at the moment, talks with the mine are deadlocked and that a new round of talks will probably only start again on Monday, saying “we are are prepared to sit down and talk. We hope that we are not far apart”. NUM said on Wednesday the company offered wage increases of 9.5% for the A-band, 8.75% for the B-band and 8.5% for the C-band, while it was demanding a 12% increase for all employees. A number of other issues were also disputed, including minimum wages, the livingout allowance, the equalisation of bonuses, housing and medical subsidies, among other issues. Mr Matsepane says the company keep claiming that they have no land for housing since 2003 and that no progress on this issue had been made up to date. “There is no going back. Mine management must meet our demands or else the strike is on them,” NUM regional secretary for the organisation’s north-east region, William Mabapa, said in a statement. Modikwa

Platiunum Mine is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Anglo American Platinum. The operation comprises a 450-mdeep underground mine, consisting of three decline shafts and a concentrator.

Samancor strike set to continue Meanwhile a strike at Samancor Chrome, the world’s second-largest chrome producer, in its third week is to continue because the union representing the strikers says it will make no further concessions. More than 3500 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members at Samancor are demanding that operations personnel and smelter operators be paid the same wages. The NUM said it would not budge in terms of its demands for wage equalisation at Samancor. “The meeting is over now. There has not been any progress,” union spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said. “The strike will continue until a resolution is found.” NUM and Samancor Chrome management met on Wednesday and Tuesday, but failed to resolve the strike. “We have not arranged any other meetings now. It will depend on the company’s willingness to come and talk to us.” Seshoka said 3500 union members downed tools at the company’s Eastern Chrome Mines, near Steelpoort and Western Chrome Mines, near Mooinooi in the North West. Other conditions of service were also in dispute. These included the calculation of benefits, family responsibility leave and funeral cover. Samancor Chrome sells more than 700 kilotons of chrome ore per year in export markets.

National Water Week celebrated locally National Water Week was celebrated on a grand scale in Sekhukhune District last week Friday when the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, visited the new De Hoop Dam and afterwards met the community at Ga-Malekane next to the steel bridge at the Jane Furse turn-off from the R555. Before the large event in the tents, schools in the area gathered at De Hoop Dam where Dwars River Mine launched a new community project to protect the enivronment (pages 6 and 7). Sekhukhune District Mayor, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, told learners and guests at the dam that it was imperative to interact through meaningful engagement with learners and everybody else on issues relating to climate change and bio-diversity. He said this year’s theme is “WATER IS LIFE. RESPECT IT. CONSERVE IT. ENJOY IT”.” He said Sekhukhune District Municipality invites everybody to be vigilant and considerate about the role of water in

social and economic development, including the need to get citizens to change their attitudes towards water use. The Mayor said the District Municipality is confident that it will achieve its milestones as it it seeks to unlock all hurdles to the provisioning of quality water. He said attached to De Hoop Dam (which is now 81 percent complete) “we have already made meaningful progress regarding the construction of water treatment plants, reservoirs and laying of bulk lines”. Water Treatment Plants are in Steelpoort and Mooihoek, bulk pipelines are visible on the R37 road from Burgersfort to Ga-Maroga and on the R579 road from Ga-Malekane to Jane Furse. A 25 magalitre reservoir in Jane Furse has been completed and plans to connect a bulk pipeline from Jane Furse to Lobethal are at an advanced stage. Bulk lines will also be constructed from Bothashoek to praktiseer where existing reservoirs will be augmented to supply in increased water demand.

National and local star, Winnie Mashaba (right) proved to be a smash hit with the large crowd sheltered under te tents from the harsh sun (bottom).

Samancor ECM assists the Civil Society Development Initiative Civil Society Development Initiative (CSDI), is situated at Riba Cross Village. Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines, took the initiatives to get involved with this project by assisting them with some maintenance problems on their buildings. Samancor ECM in partnership with OSC did the renovation of the building which included the painting of walls, fixing and painting of ceilings, and the repairs on the ablution

facilities. The renovation was of ECM’s commitment to care for the community and to ensure that vulnerable children and poor families get proper care and support services in a healthy and safe building. The manager of the CSDI Mrs N.R Maphanga expressed her gratitude to the Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines. (Information & photographs: Mariska Stickling, ECM)

Stinky stream still flowing Tenants of the building next to where Supa Save is currently operating are smelling something bad on a regular basis. The building’s tenants include amongst others a Medical Centre, FNB branch, SA Multi Loan, Essential Books and Stationery and E-Touch Hair Salon. Their employees and tenants are forced

to drive and walk through streams of sewage and waste water regularly. The degree of flow and the content of the stream vary from day to day. The tenants have on numerous occasions contacted the Department of Health at the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM). In last year an official of GTM allegedly gave the shops from where the water and sewage is coming 7 days’ notice to rectify the situation or face closure. Six months later, the situation is getting unbearable for the tenants and no attempts have been made to clear the health hazard. By the time of going to press, GTM have not responded to written enquiries.

DWARSRIVIER MINE

Water is Life Conserve it, Respect it, Enjoy it

National Water Week was celebrated last week from 5 – 11 March 2012. A major event took place at De Hoop Dam. Dwarsrivier Mine, committed to the development and health of local communities, was part of this event. Approximately 300 learners from various schools in the area visited the De Hoop Dam on Friday, 9 March 2012. The 2012 National Water Week had the theme “Water is Life – Conserve it, Respect it, Enjoy it”. The children were encouraged to conserve water and the environment. Mr Remember Mmbengwa (photograph top leftt) of Dwarsrivier Mine, officials from the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs, Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District, Cllr. Magabe and officials from De Hoop Dam addressed the learners. Dwarsrivier Mine in the fight against climate change has initiated a campaign called ‘Adopt a Tree’. The various schools represented at the event each received Marula trees to be planted at their schools. Dwarsrivier Mine donated this and the idea is to teach children about a carbon footprint, but also to encourage them to take care of the tree and receive incentives for doing so. The Marula The learners each received a water bottle, T-shirt and foam cap from Dwarsrivier Mine.

tree is indigenous to the area and during Marula season produces fruit that is used to brew Marula beer. This is often an additional income to families selling their Marula beer at stalls next to the road. So far 100 Marula trees have been procured for adoption. A formula will be used to determine how ‘green’ schools are by taking care of their trees. Depending on the size of the tree, a carbon footprint is measured. The bigger the tree, the better for the environment and the bigger the rewards for the schools. Dwarsrivier Mine will be visiting the schools to encourage them to keep looking after their trees and to measure the growth of the trees. Before leaving for a sightseeing trip of the construction of the De Hoop Dam, the learners watched the Sekhukhune District Mayor, Cllr. Magabe and Greater Tubatse Mayor, Cllr. Mahlake together with Mr Mmbengwa of Dwarsrivier and other officials plant two Marula trees at the Visitor Centre at De Hoop Dam. The children each received a water bottle, T-shirt and foam cap from Dwarsrivier Mine. Upon their return from the wall construction and lookout point, the children each received a warm meal before departing to the National Water Week main event next to Gobetse Secondary School. The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa also attended this event as the keynote speaker. Dwarsrivier Mine is proud to have been involved in Water Week and will continue to play a role in the communities surrounding it. Mr Mmbengwa left the learners with the encouragement to support their initiative and to plant more trees.

Approximately 300 local learners representing various schools attended the event at De Hoop Dam.

The minister said… Mrs. Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs addressed the crowd at the main event next to Steel Bridge on Friday last week. In essence she said: “Water is life, conserve it, protect it, enjoy it. I also want to add to that theme the line that says – share it. Access to water is a basic human need and right. But like every right it comes with responsibilities – in this case they are to protect and conserve it”. Impoundment at De Hoop Dam will commence during the third quarter of this year and the completion of the dam is due by December 2012. Water delivery to the water treatment works at the Steel Bridge is planned for January 2013. She also mentioned the coming job losses as the De Hoop Dam nears completion. She confirmed her department’s commitment to ensuring that the Bulk Distribution system that is still to be constructed, source as much local labour as possible. She also told the audience that the completion of the dam itself would bring job opportunities in the form of tourism and related economic activities in the area. “I call on everyone to not only celebrate Water Week this week, or this month, but throughout the year. We can all contribute through conserving and protecting this precious life source that is very scarce”. Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa at the event.

Did you know about the Marula?

What is your carbon footprint?

It can be found in 29 countries.

Dwarsrivier Mine donated Marula trees to local schools and the Visitor Centre at De Hoop Dam. This will help local people to make their carbon footprint smaller. But what is a carbon footprint? A carbon footprint is a measurement or calculation of the carbon dioxide (one of the primary greenhouse gases). Everyone produces carbon dioxide through our direct use of energy (by making use of fossil fuels such as coal for heat etc.) and indirectly through our consumption of resources that require energy throughout the lifecycle of the product. A carbon footprint is generally calculated for a year. It is the sum of all our actions and activities where there are CO2 (and other greenhouse gas) emissions which impact on the atmosphere and the environment. A product also has a carbon footprint. This refers to the total amount of CO2 (or other greenhouse gases) generated throughout the lifecycle of the product - from the raw material and packaging to the manufacturing, distribution, transport, use and disposal of the product. (Adapted from www.greenworks.co.za)

A single tree can bear up to 500kg of fruit per year! A medium large tree is approximately 9 metres tall, but can grow up to 18 metres. Only female trees bear fruit. The male trees only display flowers. Marula wood has traditionally been used for carving pestles and mortars, bowls, drums, stools and even canoes. It has also been used for making tomato boxes and toilet seats. The bark of the tree has medicinal properties. It is said to work for treating diarrhoea and insect bites. The essence of the leaves has relative anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties. The Marula has since 1951 been a protected tree in South Africa.

The National Water Week event at De Hoop Dam and nearby communities was hosted by the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs, the Sekhukhune District Municipality and Dwarsrivier Mine. The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs. Edna Molewa was the keynote speaker of the day and gospel singer Winnie Mashaba was part of the day’s entertainment.

16 MARCH 2012

Do you know your rights? Next week Wednesday South Africa will be celebrating Human Rights Day with a public holiday. This day remembers the day in 1960 when Police killed 69 people in Sharpeville who were participating in protests against pass laws. Four days after the incident black political organisations were banned and many political leaders arrested or forced into exile. Human Rights Day on 21 March every year is aimed at ensuring that the people of South Africa are aware of their human rights and that the abuses that happened during apartheid will not occur again. We asked readers if they know their human rights and if they’ve in the past felt that these rights were not respected.

Mr Simon Molobela and Mr Alec Moriri said: “Yes, we do know our rights. People must be educated to know their rights”. Mr Moriri added: “I’ve previously felt people infringed on my rights when they do things like invading my personal space, but they don’t always know they are doing it”.

Mr Bonga Peter said: “I know my rights. Most of the motorists in Burgersfort don’t respect our human rights. They think it is democracy if they stop anywhere in the middle of the road without consideration for any oncoming cars”.

Mr Khonzaphi Ngcenge said: “I feel like my human rights are always respected. People in South Africa know their rights”.

Mr Mphele Maaboki said: “People don’t respect Human Rights Day, especially in the environment we work in - the mining industry. You will find that it is a public holiday, but they make you come to work. I know my rights”.

Mr Ledimo Moretsele said: “I think that we are not familiar with our human rights, especially in the work place. You will find that in a work place as a supervisor you sometimes forget that the person next to you have rights. Then it is easy to act in a way that violates their rights. The Human Rights Day public holiday is essential for people to be reminded of their rights”.

Mnr. Roelf Burger sê: “Ek hou op Menseregtedag net vakansiedag. Ek kan tog niks aan my menseregte doen nie. Ek voel die manier waarop die taxi’s in Burgersfort ry skend my reg op veilige padgebruik”.

Mr Mike Galvin and Ms Nicole Labuschagne said: “As far as rights - we don’t always know what our rights are especially at work. We don’t know what we can do to protect ourselves. I (Galvin) recently felt that my human rights were violated in a work related incident”.

Mr Given Komane said: “Some police officers don’t respect other people’s human rights. According to our law all people have human rights such as freedom of speech and movement. The Police sometimes just shoot people - they don’t respect and protect”.

Mr Titus Nkgudi said: “I understand my human rights. But that thing about Activism against Women and Child abuse - I like it, but I am also against it. Men are left behind. Even if a man cry you don’t have a shoulder to cry on. The Human Rights Day itself is valuable as a public holiday. The normal person should be taught from school about their human rights. I just want the rights to be balanced in terms of gender. Even in the workplace employees and employers should get information about their human rights. Explain it in meetings”.

Mr Sebatane Melatji said: “We must understand what human rights mean. It is not just a holiday next week. I’ve in the past felt that my human rights have not been taken into consideration at times. I want to encourage people to remember this day”. Left: Ms Sophie Riba said: “I respect Human Rights Day. Yes, I know my rights and I also know a lady whose husband I feel don’t respect her rights. She is not allowed to attend the children’s sporting activities. I also feel women’s human rights are violated when men complain about us wearing mini skirts. We have a right to wear what we like”.

Mnr.
