Gazette Public Protector visits locally Local stakeholders had the opportunity on Wednesday and yesterday to engage with Public Protector Adv. Busisiwe Mkhwebane on issues around the importance of establishing internal complaints resolution units, customer service units or sectoral ombudsman institutions within the provincial government. Adv. Mkhwebane visited Burgersfort as part of a nationwide roadshow to hold talks with government and other relevant stakeholders on the importance of addressing service and conduct failure complaints at municipal or departmental levels before the grievances could be escalated to her office. The roadshow commenced in Mpumalanga in July, bringing together an array of interested parties, including representatives of the provincial government, municipalities traditional authorities as well as various civil society organizations. It seeks to give effect to Pillar 7 of the Public Protector Vision 2023 - a detailed plan which is essentially about taking the institution’s services to the grassroots. Pillar 7 encourages organs of state to establish effective internal complaints resolution units, customer service units or sectoral ombudsman offices. Mkhwebane said organs of state need to develop Service Standards and Customer Service charters in line with the Batho Pele principles. Her first stop was at Sehlaku Technical High School at Driekop she had a discussion with the learners - whom the Public Protector describes as key to carrying her message home. Yesterday she met with provincial and municipal officials as well as representatives from various civil society organizations.

When caring is more than words alone Tubatse Ferrochrome honoured the global initiative of Mandela Day to make a serious difference. The Tubatse Ferrochrome Women’s Forum visited Makopole High School at the Ga-Mampuru community to donate sanitary towels to the girls. Often learners miss out on valuable education when they start their monthly periods because they cannot afford to buy sanitary towels. This donation did not only give them back their time at school, but also the confidence to take on life without fear of being caught off gaurd by their bodies’ normal cycle. In another Mandela Day initiative the Will Kathy Créche at Ga-Mapodile received some
plastic motorbikes for the children to play with. The donation was received with loads of appreciation and the children immediately taking off on their new ‘motorbikes’. Tubatse Ferrochrome also cares about their employees and regularly hosts Wellness Days. During these Wellness Days employees get the opportunity to voluntarily participate in getting health checks such as blood pressure, blood glucose testing and even things such as HIV or TB testing. In the most recent Wellness Day the focus was very holistic and employees could seek assistance with things such as debt management, budgeting and taking out insurance policies to provide and plan for the future of their families.

Women take initiative Women in law enforcement and emergency services took the lead this week with an all female force hosting a road block to make sure drivers have valid licenses and that their vehicles are roadworthy. This was part of their Women’s Month programme. The initiative took place on 15 August in Burgersfort near the R37 and R555 cross at Tubatse Crossing Mall. The traffic officers, police officers and emergency services ladies braved the early summer heat to make sure that law and order is enforced on the roads. A large number of traffic fines were issued for various offences.
The call to ‘Arise and shine’ Women from different Christian Assemblies gathered last weekend in Burgersfort for a weekend of growth, prayer and awareness. The theme of the weekend was ‘Arise and shine’ and different speakers graced the occasion. A walk with banners through Extention 10 saw the ladies not only proudly walk to proclaim their faith, but also getting some exercise to take care of themselves. One of the speakers, Rosemary Makola emphasised
the importance of taking care of yourself. Pastor Theresa (from Grace Healing Centre Church) brought a message focused on ‘Arise and Shine’. Pastor Dinah (Faith in Action Fellowship Church) encouraged the women to ‘always shine’. “A big thank you to the Limpopo District of Christian Assemblies International (Phalaborwa, Elim, Giyani and Lebowakgomo) as well as the women from Christian Assemblies Extention 10,” said Mrs Rosa Williams. The Eastern Limb Mines Career Expo -2018
T
he 2018 Eastern Limb Mines Career Expo took place from 31st July to 3rd August at Samancor Winterveld Club in Steelpoort with about 24 exhibitors. An estimated 6000 learners from surrounding schools as well as those from as far afield as Lephalale and Phalaborwa visited the venue throughout the week. On arrival each learner was treated to a meal before being ushered to exhibiting stalls. The pupils were divided into small groups of 10 to 15 individuals and directed towards exhibition stands where presenters taught them about multitude of careers and operational activities in the mines. Learners enthusiastically interacted with all sorts of practicing professionals from mechanical and electrical engineers, geologists,
Kobus Fourie, Jakes Van der Sandt, Peet Herbst and Nora Mphahlele
HRD manager’s forum – conveners of the exhibition – said the idea of the expo was brought about back in 2009. Human Resource Development (HRD) managers of mining operations in Eastern Limpopo region came together to deal with common training challenges. They identified aneed and thus an opportunity to provide career guidance on various mining industry professions as well as to engage with communities around their respective areas of operations. The process also fulfills some of the objectives in the companies’ social labour plans (SLP). The first expo was held at Modikwa mine in 2011 with focus on grade 9 learners. However it was realised that many schools did not offer relevant subject choices at that level, then focus moved towards the grades 10 and 11. Peet Herbst, member of the HRD forum, ex-
health and safety specialists to human resource management, finance and procurement. They were advised of a variety of career paths lying ahead of them as well as prerequisites of bursaries and scholarships opportunities offered by mining organisations as well as other industries. Not only learners were interested in the workings of the mines and smelters, but educators also demonstrated enthusiasm in the information that was dished out. In many of the presentations a good pass rate in functional mathematics, mathematics, accounting and physical sciences were repeatedly mentioned as a must. Kobus Fourie, chairperson of the Eastern Lim Mines plained that one of logistical challenges in organizing an event of this nature, had to do with aligning plans with learners’ academic calendar, so as to avoid conflict with their examinations. The other challenge had to do with communication with participating schools about a set date. In the end though the team aced it and put up a successful expo in all aspects. The Provincial Department of Education, Psychology and Guidance Services’ Ms. Nora Mphahlele said the department receives many requests for career expo’s from other sectors as well. However, by targeting learners in grade 10 and 11 the Eastern Lim Mines Career Expo plays an important role of helping learners to make appropriate subject choices in their final high school years. The expo has been well received and endorsed by local government as well as provincial government. Councilor MJ Phokwane - the mayor of the Fetakgomo Tubatse municipality, accompanied by other VIP dignitaries also visited the exhibition stalls and interacted with both the learners and presenters. Jakes van der Sandt, another member of the HRD forum stressed that while there are opportunities in mining, the sector cannot solely absorb everyone. Looking into the future, van der Sandt indicated, the forum intends to attract more organisations in the services sector to take part in the expo so learners could be exposed to career paths those sectors and encouraged to consider them as well.

Owners of land in Burgersfort (in the Google Earth image the large piece of vacant land adjacent to the build-up area to the South of the R37 route through the town) went to court to fight a land grab that is ongoing since the end of last week. As far as could be established an interim court order was obtained by at least one of two land owners. Respondents in the matter have indicated that they want to oppose the interim order. As far as could be determined, the matter will be heard on Tuesday. The involvement of the Police in the matter, who allegedly also did not react to the land grab is also a bone of contention between the sparring parties. Apart from the illegality of the land grab it is not clear if criminal aspects, that is allegations that people are selling plots at land for thousands of rand (the fraud aspect), and the possible political aspect (that a political party or civil group) are behind the issue, are also investigated.

By the time of going to press 21 people were arrested for public violence.

Boxing teaches youngsters discipline and focus In one of the least known areas - Ga-Maguduza section of Strekfontein village, in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality is one of the area’s best kept secrets for boxing fraternity. Young men of school-going ages gather daily at the homestead of Mr Phillipos Matšomane to hone their boxing skills. According to Mr Matšomane the daily routine of these boxing legends in the making include going to school at the local Moganetšwa Primary and Good Hope Secondary, doing homework together, running in the hills, fitness exercises, sparring and punching. As a community activist, sport enthusiast and a community builder, Matšomane uses boxing to instil the values of discipline and strict adherence to the principles of athletic success. He also uses his constant contact with young men to mentor them into responsible, caring and considerate adults. As the President of Matšomane Boxing Club he said his club educates the young boxing charges to become a good example to their peers, starting with sharing in home chores such as drawing water and washing dishes for them to internalise the values of non-sexism and respect for women. “I am committed to producing holistically useful champions who will add value to society and to boxing as they punching their way to the titles of the future” said Matšomane

He added that their club has not received any form of funding and they use his thatched spare room to train, punch and lift without much room for the more than 20 athletes. “Our biggest headache at the moment is transport to tournaments and the parents are so poor you won’t even know how to ask them to pay for transport fees” he added One of Matšomane Boxing Club’s seasoned boxers Bongani Khumalo (19) says his time to represent South Africa at any Olympic or other level has come and wished boxing promoters from Boxing South Africa could visit and give them a platform to shine. “I have more fight in me, I only need to take it out there” said an enthusiastic Bongani If you are willing to help or donate to Matšomane Boxing Club you may contact Mr Phillipos Matšomane on 072 790 1861 or the Community Development Worker Ms Violet Boshomane on 082 958 3447.
