Anglo Platinum Limited held its Bokamoso Skills Development Graduation Ceremony at the Sekhukhune FET College’s Dr CN Phatudi Campus in Praktiseer last week Friday. Over 500 youths attended a portable skills development programme, providing them training opportunities in areas such as plumbing, bricklaying, tiling, welding and catering. Over 3000 learners in communities around platinum communities participated. In partnership with both provincial and local government, the company offered training programmes that enable participants to create their own employment opportunities in addition to participating in the national infrastructure development programme. The skills development model that was used is integrated and covers technical training, workplace/ experiential training, entrepreneurship training and exit opportunities. Also on Friday the company handed over Community Trust Funds to the traditional leaders of various communities around Twickenham Platinum Mine. Delivering the keynote address at the function, Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Ralepane Mamekoa, told the audience that partnerships between the mines and businesses are the key to economic development and job creation in the area. He said more than 27 companies are active in mining in the Greater Tubatse municipal area. If only one company, in this case, Anglo Platinum, can achieve so much in such a short time, development and education in the area can be hugely accelerated if all the companies do their part. Because of the sheer scope of the project, certificates where handed to students in batches, and photographers struggled to get the large groups into the lens for group photographs. Cheques (ranging in the region of R1 million) were handed individually to traditional authorities before it was time for lunch and entertainment for all.
Ceremony marks community involvement
08 December, when By-elections in two vacant wards in Burgersfort were supposed to be held, went by virtually unnoticed election wise as only the ANC has nominated candidates. Their candidates were declared councillirs as their nominiations were uncontested by other political parties. (See the results of the election in the IEC graph). As far as Platinum Gazette could determine, it was not that other parties did not have any candidates available. A COPE member told the newspaper “it is not worth it at this late stage to try and fight an election in a ward. It is unneccessary waste of time, money and energy. We will rather wait for next year’s local government elections”.

‘Nationalisation of mines, better services’ - ANCYL
NEWS The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) held its third subregional conference in Tubatse in Burgersfort last week Saturday. During the conference seaveral resolutions were taken. On mining delegates said that Tubatse is rich in minerals and yet its people are poor, conditions of the roads and other facilities are deteriorating because of the influx of people attracted by mining activities. They supported the call by the ANCYL national leadership that mines must be nationalised, saying “ If mine bosses resist our programme of nationalisation, they must pack and go to the West. Mines must be biased towards employing the majority of local young people who are piling up the streets without any hope of decent life”. On governance they agreed that service delivery is poor and lashed out against, corruption and the inability of the municipality to employ local young people to accelerate service delivery. “Tubatse is amassed with skilled young people who are been compromised by the so-called girlfriend deployment’ of relatives and friends with no competencies. We therefore resolved that ‘a new broom sweeps clean’. The next council must be composed in a way that young people will play a major role in governance” they stated
17 DECEMBER 2010 in a news release after the conference, adding “ laziness, corruption, poor performance by current councillors will not be tolerated as it compromises delivery of services”. Delegates warned young people against the dangers of the Aids pandemic, saying “young people themselves must promote an in-depth awareness of HIV/Aids in their respective communities. The one condom, one round motto must precede any conjugal relationship amongst young people. Substance abuse must be minimised”. The conference expressed its concern about the low standard of education in communities and the early drop-outs amongst young people. The conference called on all spheres of government to take part in uplifting the standard of education including local mines by awarding a reasonable number of bursaries, learnerships and experience training, expressing the view that “mines in the area have a responsibility to plough back skills appropriate to their operations”. During the conference Mankgase Mashabela was elected Chairperson, Pelaelo Matemane, Deputy Cahiarperson, Emmanuel Makgoga, Secretary, Mmaselo Motshwane, Deputy Secretary and Halinda Mojalefa, Treasurer.

Christmas message by the Sekhukhune District Mayor “As the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, I would like to take this opportunity to send my festive greetings to everybody in the District. The year 2010 has been a year full of milestones that we all shall cherish in our life time. We started it with Mayoral consultative meetings geared towards of 2010 / 2011 IDP Budget. It is through that campaign that as elected officials of the ANC-led government, fresh mandate was received from you the people. We also met with stakeholders like traditional leaders and NGOs to deliberate on issues of service delivery. We highly appreciate your contributions towards our 2010 / 2011 IDP-Budget. As we entered this festive season, let us remind ourselves that respect and discipline are the core values of UBUNTU in our culture. You indeed made us proud when you graced the occasion of the biggest soccer show piece THE 2010 FIFA World Cup. You braved all sorts of weathers and gathered in your thousands at both Ntwampe and Monsterlus Sports Grounds. We thank you for that. During this time of the year, we dare not falter. HIV/AIDS continue to be a thorn in our lifetime. And us as 1,2million people of Sekhukhune District, we join the world as we advocate Safe Sex and support to victims of HIV/AIDS. We notice with sadness the ongoing loss of lives on our roads. And our message is that one life is one too many. Let us respect one another and obey the laws of the road. As Sekhukhune District Municipality, we are aware that many of our people still work long distances from home. We welcome them to motherland as they arrive for the festive season. We are humbled by the fact that our crime statistics are very low. Therefore we call upon everyone to behave very well so that we may achieve zero crime rates. In case of any eventuality, please contact the nearest SAPS and avoid taking the law into your own hands. To parents and guardians, we urge you to use money sparingly, the new academic year is here. And in the spirit of our internationally acclaimed campaign of ONE GOAL, that is education for all children, let us save money. To all learners in awaiting Grade 12 results, we wish you success. We depend on you for the much needed engineers and doctors in the District. As the ANC-led government, we are on course with the targets for Millennium Development Goals. Weather be it on water or sanitation, we are on course. Together we will dismantle all challenges ahead of us. That is why for the New Year, we still say to you “Working Together We can Do More”. On behalf of the District Municipality, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year. Do not Drink and Drive and Arrive Alive”.
His Worship, the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe.

What do the children wish It is almost Christmas time and although Christmas is not about receiving gifts, it is a ritual that takes place in many homes. Christians use this ritual to explain that like the wise men in the Bible who brought gifts to the newborn Jesus, we give presents in rememberance of God’s gift to us - His only Son. However, no matter why people give gifts over Christmas, the children are always ready with their lists of ‘most wanted’ goodies. This is what a few had on their wishlists for this year.

SPORT Hope in Heels Tubatse Ferrochrome hosted the Hope in Heels Walk on Thursday last week. A heavy thunderstorm delayed the start, but did not dampen the spirits of those who came to participate. The walk followed a route of approximately 5km around the golf course and back into Tubatse Village through the security gate. Some people walked in high heels, while others chose to keep their feet comfortable in tekkies. The Hope in Heels event was hosted in support of the Sixteen days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse. The entry fee of R10 per person as well as a R50 contribution (from Tubatse Ferrochrome) for every Tubatse employee entering, went towards charities supporting this cause. These include: Women + Men against Child abuse, The Leigh Matthews Trust and the iKhaya Le Themba Home of Right: Denzel Groenewald (9) was first to be back at the Chrome Club and welcomed the first adult, Emmanuel Mthombeni.
The rain did not keep people from participating. Before the start each participant released a helium filled balloon.
Hope. 500 Helium filled ballons were released before the start of the walk. This represented a few things: 1. Giving your hope wings. 2. Breaking free from abuse. 3. Releasing it as a symbol for everyone who is still caught in the circle of abuse. The first child back at the club was Denzel Groenewald (9). The first adults were Emmanuel Mthombeni, Shaun Fergusson and Renier de Beer. They are all from MTTi Training Centre and did their company proud. At the finish everyone received a medal, goodie bag and wors roll. The Hope in Heels Walk is due to become an annual event.
