Fatality at Bokoni

The Department of Water Affairs says the De Hoop dam currently under construction between Steelpoort and Roossenekal will probably be completed in December this year. According to the Department progress to date include the placement of concrete with the total volume of 129 000 cubic metres, which was placed in 30 days during November 2011. This is a new South African record for Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC). Partial impoundment is expected to commence before the end of 2012i. In 2003, the then President Thabo Mbeki announced the construction of a dam on the Olifants River System that would supply water to the towns, industries and poorly serviced rural communities in parts of the Sekhukhune, Capricorn and Mogalakwena regions of Limpopo. The Olifants River Water Resources Development Project, with its many phases, including the construction of De Hoop Dam will supply water to communities and mines in the surrounding areas. In March 2007, the construction site was officially opened during a sod turning ceremony. Construction activities advanced at good pace with many milestones achieved. As per the De Hoop Dam Charter, signed by the Department of Water Affairs, the Premier of the Province, as well as the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, it was agreed that a minimum of 60% of the labour force, should be sourced locally. There are 1061 people employed on the site, of which 842 are local residents from Makhuduthamaga (2 wards), Tubatse (6 wards), Elias Motsoaledi (1 ward) Municipalities. The completion of the dam unfortunately also holds some bad news. The department says as the end of construction approaches, the amount of work will become less and less, up until the dam is fully operational and providing water to communities and industry in the area. This means that some employee contracts will not be renewed as the work downsizes. This process will continue until completion of the project.

Another mineworker in the area died this week. On Wednesday Anooraq Resources Corporation (Anooraq) announced: “with deep regret that an employee was fatally injured at the Bokoni Platinum Mine’s Vertical shaft, on Tuesday, 14 February 2012, in a fall of ground accident in the 6-E17 raise line. The South African Department of Mineral Resources has issued a Section 54 safety stoppage notice in respect of the Bokoni operations and further updates will be provided to the market in due course. ‘The law must take its course’ - Executive Mayor

Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale blitzed through Greater Tubatse Municipality on Tuesday, inter alia to inspect work on the new bridge between Penge and Mankele village. It was decided to build the bridge after an Imbizo where residents complained about their safety in crossing the Olifants River. The photographs were taken last week Thursday. As can be seen on the photogrph, work on the bridge and tarred road to Mankele is progressing rapidly.

The Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, says he is disturbed by the ongoing violent protests in Praktiseer area of the Greater Tubatse Municipality. “Of utmost concern to me and the entire leadership collective is that this protest is done in the name of service delivery. And unfortunately this raises lot of suspicions due to the fact that our people in Praktiseer, Ga-Manoke, Bothashoek and part of Dresten have been without water since January and there was no violence. One wonders the timing of the violence since on the Monday violence broke out, it was the same day that government has began supply of water to all the people”. Whilst the District Municipality acknowledges that not enough was done to communicate the breakdown of its raw water pump in the Tubatse River, which led to interruption of supply of water to residents, and the coordination of its water tankers to assist with water, Executive Mayor Magabe still maintains “it can’t be that when there are challenges our people should take to the streets and embark on unlawful marches, barricade public roads, prevent people from going to work and deny learners access to schooling, burn tyres and intimidate public officials with death and destruction of their properties. All this are purely criminal acts and SAPS should then work accordingly”. “Once again I urge our people to be careful not to be abused by criminals who

A South African trend is that security risk is moving to the softer targets – the residences where individuals rather than companies are responsible for paying the security bills. The above bring about demands for lower security costs, which are achieved by certain security companies, but to the detriment of the service to the resident or complex or estate. Security guards are normally unhappy because they are underpaid, are not paid statutory required benefits such as annual bonuses, provident fund contributions nor overtime, uniforms are shabby and guards pay for part of the uniform pieces or provide own shoes and on the other hand are government statutory payments not met – all of these to cut costs to be able to have a warm body in a uniform at the gate meeting the requirement of having a guard at the gate. It is indeed in the residential areas, complexes and security estates where security requirements are stringent - where lives are at risk. A higher than normal level happy security officer, properly equipped and dressed is required to care for our lives and belongings. Thorburn Security Solutions is putting together a package for residential security in Burgersfort which is based on volumes and the provision of security to four or more estates – we would like to see higher graded guarding on Grade C levels in estates, equipped with sms based panic alarm system linked to a reputable response company and Thorburn managers in Burgersfort and Steelpoort, backed up by a 24 hour Thorburn mobile supervisor in Burgersfort for immediate client interaction (not replacing individual response services). Live guard petrol monitoring systems is essential. Security officers would be remunerated as prescribed by the Sectorial Determination and no short cuts taken in the payment systems, which will include the payment of the prescribed minimum 208 hours basic wage, overtime, Sunday time, public holiday time, annual bonus and contributions to the Private Security Industry Provident Fund. Uniforms will add to the image of residential estates and a monthly performance and attendance bonus system is in place. A second phase of the development, which could be sooner than later could be dedicated, qualified armed response whilst off site cctv and alarm monitoring systems from an independent Thorburn Remote Monitoring Center is a further development on the horizon for Burgersfort. take advantage of their genuine service delivery concerns such as shortage of water to instigate their unlawful activities. Water is a constitutional right for all and government has the responsibility to supply people with water without failure”. On the alleged arrest of Putiputi Mogakala purporting to be COPE leader, Mr Gert Masilela, former PAC councillor and Collen Dlamini, Greater Tubatse Municipal employee, and others, Councillor Magabe says “we must allow Police to execute their duties without any interference from whoever, be it political or otherwise. We are a constitutional country and we need respect the independence of our law enforcement agencies hence I can’t comment much on the arrests and the justice process because this institutions are independent and the function as such”. Mayor Magabe said in conclusion “During our urgent meeting which was held on Sunday last week with residents of Praktiseer, we outlined short, medium and long term plans that the District Municipality is embarking upon to solve this problem of water shortages once and for all. And we will share more details during a Mayoral Outreach meeting with all residents to be held at: Batubatse Primary School on Sunday the 19th February 2012 at 10:00 am” Currently all the people of Bothashoek, Praktiseer, Ga-Manoke and part of Dresten are receiving water as usual.

From IT to cattle farmer

“Farming has always been in my blood”. This is according to Mohlaka Lucas Makuwa (36) who is a young cattle farmer at Orhigstad on the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. Makuwa who was born at Ga -Phasha Village near Steelpoort, said he started saving money when he was still working as an IT technician in Johannesburg. Born at a very remote and rural village, Makuwa, was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He said he grew up like any other village boy and herded his father’s cattle while he was young. He said he started with a piggery project in 2000 and changed to cattle farming in 2005. “Each month I would buy two cattle and that is how I started my farming mission. Today I own a herd of 300 cattle, sheep and goats and my intention is to become one of the biggest cattle farmers in this area. His herd comprises of Brahman, Nguni, and Photograph and article: Doc Marebane

The new pink Bulls away jersey? The new Bulls away rugby jersey was revealed this weak and received a mixed reaction from the team’s fans. The new jersey will be a mix of Jacarandapurple, Very Berry and Fuchsia Rose. The new modern jersey was designed by Puma and the owners of the Bulls, the Blou Bulle Maatskappy, believes that they will now also be able to tap into an expanding women’s and youngster market. The jersey will only be worn when the team play games overseas. Locally they will still wear the traditional light blue jersey. Puma, the designers of the new jersey this week said that the idea is that the jersey’s design will distract their opponents. We asked readers what they think about the new design. Mr Emmanuel Mashaba said: “I think it looks good. They needed change. The team doesn’t change. We’ll still get the same performance”.

Food poisoning

Advertorial

Supply Chain Management Unit

Food poisoning, may especially occur in areas with high temperatures where food or water has been contaminated with certain types of bacteria, parasites, viruses or toxins. Most cases of food poisoning are due to the common bacteria called Staphylococcus or Escherichia coli (E. coli). Causes and risk factors Food poisoning are commonly recorded after eating at picnics, large social functions or restaurants. Often more than one person is affected. Bacteria can get into the food in different ways such as when the food is being processed, water that is used during gowing or shipping that may contain animal or human waste, the improper handling of the food during preperation. Food poisoning can occur from eating or drinking. People who are not washing their hands properly before working with or consuming food are at risk of contracting food poisoning. The use of unclean cooking utensils during the preparation process is another risk factor. Risky foods include: dairy products or foods with mayonnaise that have been out of the refrigerator for too long. Frozen or refrigerated foods that are not stored at the proper temperature or are not reheated properly. Raw fish and raw fruits or vegetables that have not been washed well. Undercooked eggs, water from a well, stream or untreated tap water. People that are the most at risk of contracting food poisoning are the elderly and children. People with a medical condition such as diabetes or kidney disease or struggle with a weak immune system are also at risk. Symptoms Symptoms depends on the type of food poisoning, but can include: abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever and chills, headache, nausea and vomiting, weakness. Treatment Tests may be done on your blood, stools, vomit or the food to determine the cause of the symptoms. Patients usually recover from the common types of food poisoning within a couple of days. It is important to maintain the proper amount of fluids in the body. An electrolyte solution sold in pharmacies could assist with replacing lost fluids and electrolytes in the body. In extreme cases a drip will will be used at a doctor or clinic to help replace fluids.
