New The Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality’s satelite office in Praktiseer is boasting a brand new national flag as well as a new municipal flag. The previous one was literally falling apart as Platinum Gazette reported recently. Residents can now once again take pride in these special symbols flying above these offices. Earlier this week new flags had not yet been hoisted at the municipal buildings in Burgersfort and Ohrigstad. The posts were empty. The photo on the left was taken last Friday.
Malachi 3:10 (NIV) “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”
Where is the bridge? Residents from the village Maseven in the Ngwaabe area are still negotiating their way through rough terrain where a bridge will make things much safer and faster. Residents benefitted from a stretch of tar road constructed a few years ago. The construction however stopped short of an area where an access bridge is desperately needed. Locals know how to swerve off the road and take the ‘bush road’, but visitors to the area might just be brought to a sudden and dangerous stop.
SAPS visits Kopi Primary School The Burgersfort SAPS conducted a back-to-school campaign at Kopi Primary School on 7 February 2017. The theme of the day was: ‘Crime does not pay’. Needy learners were also given school uniforms by the officers. (Information & photographs: Const V. Maluleka. Burgersfort SAPS)

Provincial state of education in focus A look at challenges, reasons for dysfunctionality and more The ANC Parliamentary Caucus in the Limpopo Legislature, met in an ordinary meeting on Tuesday, 14 February 2017, to reflect on Members’ observations during the 2017 back to school campaign. The observations discussed included the following: Schools that achieve good results are naturally functional and have extracurricular activities - these include morning and afternoon studies. It was also observed that districts like Vhembe that perform better, generally have extra lessons on weekends. However this is not the case in Sekhukhune and Capricorn districts. It is the view of the Caucus that, ‘we cannot have one school achieving over 80%, while others fail to pass even one learner’. The Caucus raised a concern that the majority of educators are approaching pensionable age; this will result in a gap within the sector. Government’s efforts to enroll more students within the Fundza Lushaka Bursary Scheme, had been noticed, but the Caucus emphasized the need to have more teachers within the Maths and Science streams. It was also recommended to the Department that, in consultation with the Department of Higher Education, it should be considering re-opening Colleges of Education in the Province. Schools that have a greater parents involvement, at the level of School Governing Bodies, sports, academia and other areas, generally perform better. Drug abuse is rife in most of the dysfunctional schools, e.g. there are more incidents of reported drug abuse incidents in schools like Hwiti High in Mankweng, Masalanabo in Modjadji and Mabogopedi in Thabazimbi. Whereas in functional schools, like
Mbilwi and Dendron High, there are no such incidents. The meeting also discussed an incident of a School Principal who is running a shebeen, adjacent to the school in Schoonoord, within the Sekhukhune District. The Caucus considers the high rate of teenage pregnancy as worrisome. There are reports that some schools are dysfunctional on days of SASSA payouts, as most learners go for their grant collection. The Caucus is also of the view that School Management should monitor the progress made by ‘progressed learners’. It is appreciated that the phenomenon of condoning learners is as old as education, but it has always been managed, and not used to get rid of learners who are deemed ‘incapable’. It was recommended that the Department should institute programmes to support these ‘progressed learners’. The issue of dilapidated un-refurbished infrastructure was raised sharply in the meeting. In some instances, there are schools which do not have electricity supply and properly functioning ablution facilities. The Provincial Department requires additional funding in excess of R21 billion to keep up with infrastructural challenges. An analysis is constantly being done to assess the needs of individual schools. However, there is a general concern by the Department that acts of vandalism are working against progress made at schools. These acts of vandalism are perpetuated by community members in most of the schools. The Caucus made a clarion call to members of civil society to desist from acts of vandalism on public property. The Department demonstrated a continuous commitment to provide schools with

10 Februarie 2017. Sy het my so mooi gehelp en was die hele tyd by my. My omgewing waarin ek geboorte geskenk het was regtig baie skoon.
