Lunar eclipse spectacular The longest lunar eclipse in more than a decade turned the moon blood red on Wednesday evening giving stargazers around the world a rare visual treat. The first eclipse of the year, when the Earth casts its shadow over the Moon was seen in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. Often the moon turns brown but this time it became a reddish, copperycolour, tinged by light from the Sun. Professor Fred Watson, astronomerin-charge at the Australian Astronomical Observatory, said the best view would have been from the moon itself. "If you could watch the phenomena, you would see the earth moving across the sun and it creating a brilliant red rim around the earth," he said. The photographs were taken by Platinum Gazette at Burgersfort . The moon on the left at about 19:00 and the eclipsed one on the right at 22:14 (“totality”).
Ascension Day widely celebrated Although no longer a public holiday in South Africa for many years, christians still celebrate Ascension Day annually, also locally. Joshua Generation’s learners celebrated Ascension Day on 02 June 2011 by attending the church service at the AFM Church in Steelpoort. The students wrote messages on papers and put them into filled balloons and let them go. The school says balloons are a symbol of Jesus that went up to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit to earth. Apart from the church service at the AFM, other denominations also had their own celebrations of this major event in the Christian faith

Kgoshi Bernard Mantsho Selala of Ga-Selala (next to the road from Dilokong mine towards Marula Mine) was laid to rest last Saturday. The chief was born in 1936 and he passed away of ill health on 30 May this year. The day he was laid to rest, 11 June, was also his birthday. The new chief, Kgoshi Thabo Morwamakgane Seshoke Selala, his son, told Platinum Gazette his father was very concerned about the well-being of his people and became involved in all types of development in his capacity as a traditional leader. In this regard his role in social and educational development as well as economic development will be well remembered by the community. The new kgoshi told the newspaper that he wants to continue the excellent work his faher had done and will be involved in the development of a possible future shopping centre as well as a platinum mining company, called Ingonyama Platinum. Kgoshi Selala’s funeral was attended by hundreds of people, including fellow traditional leaders, government officials, councillors, school children, family and members of the community. Adding value through eco-friendly development Gone are the days when new developments used to attract buyers with manicured lawns and extensive hard landscaping - nowadays the demand is all for natural vegetation, indigenous trees and wildlife left undisturbed as much as possible. And fortunately, says Hoffman Prinsloo, MD of leading residential developer Cranbrook Property Projects, this co-incides with
increasing efforts on the part of most developers to protect the environment and ensure the proper management of natural resources within their new residential estates. “Of course, most new housing developments these days will in any case only be approved once an environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been done there is an environmental management plan in place, but there are quite a few developers, like ourselves, who have truly embraced the “green” approach and aim to do much more than the minimum required by law.” This wholehearted commitment to eco-friendly development, he says, is clearly evident in Cranbrook’s new Motaganeng Lifestyle Estate and Spekboom River Estate projects located east of Burgersfort in Limpopo, “where prospective buyers
can already see how the appeal and value of new homes is enhanced when ecofriendly practices are incorporated into new developments”. Among the most important of these practices, he notes, is the deliberate and proper management of storm water and other water resources to prevent wastage, reduce erosion and prevent the pollution of any streams, rivers or dams. Cranbrook also has a dedicated game and environment manager on site at these estates whose responsibilities include the removal of alien and invasive plants as well as the protection and planting of indigenous species of vegetation. And walking trails with rest spots will be a feature of both estates to enable residents to observe the abundant birdlife and small game in their natural surroundings.
In addition, the estates will have no unsightly overhead cables for electricity or communications connections. As part of the extensive infrastructure already completed, underground “sleeves” have been laid to carry all the necessary cables. Provision has also been made in the architectural guidelines for all the homes in the estate to be sited in order to make the most of natural airflow and minimise the use of air conditioners and heaters to regulate indoor temperatures. “Obviously,” says Prinsloo, “eco-friendly development is neither easy nor inexpensive, but we believe it is vital for the future viability of the projects we are involved in, and our commitment is reinforced every time we see the appreciative reaction of potential buyers in our estates to the beautiful natural settings we are creating for their homes.”

Easier access to Leboeng SAPS “Visitors to the area will be able to find the police station much easier” The access road to the Thusong Service Centre in Leboeng is getting a make-over. The road is being paved and is almost completed. This will make access from the R36 to the service centre much easier. Various government departments are based at the centre as well as the Leboeng SAPS. The new access road will ensure that visitors to the area will be able to find the police station much easier in case of an emergency. Previously rough gravel roads, overgrown and washed away by rain, criss crossed the area, making it difficult for visitors to take the right path. The rest of the village’s roads are however still in dire need of grading and upgrading.

17 JUNE 2011
16 June - still being celebrated? On 16 June (yesterday) South Africa celebrated Youth Day. This public holiday was set as a day of rememberance of the 1976 Soweto uprisings when students and educators clashed with government about education in Afrikaans instead of their mother tongue. We asked readers whether they feel Youth Day is still relevant today, do people celebrate it, does the youth know what it is about and how important they feel it is? Some also told us how they will be spending the day.
Ms Ntombizikhona Coko said: “It is worth celebrating because we are where we are today because of those people. I think it deserves a big celebration. Our youth today don’t care about the struggle and where we came from. They don’t have the information”.
Ms Taprina Makola said: “Some people know why we have Youth Day, some don’t and for them it is just a holiday. I’m working on Youth Day”.
Mr Xolani Ncane said: “If you are a politically active person it will still have meaning to you to celebrate Youth Day but if you are just a normal community member, it is just a holiday. It depends. Old guys and guys from the 70’s will know the meaning, but for the rest it is just a part of history”.
Mnr.
Mr Gadson Komane said: “Most people know about 16 June. It is part and parcel of our history. Learners and educators must remember this day and not only focus on current events. 16 June and 27 April are all important. If the children don’t celebrate, they will eventually forget it”. Mr Daron Mogane said: “I think it is good to celebrate it as it reminds us of people who fought for us all those years back. If it was not for them, we would not have had this democracy we have today”.
Mr Richard Lefine said: “People just take it as a holiday and not as a day of rememberance”.
Mr Jackson Tjati said: “I don’t see anything that’s changed. It is just like before when people lost their lives. Now there is no education. There is no respect for those who died for this. People must know the meaning of Youth Day”.
Regs: Me.
Mr Anthony Mashego and Mr Mishack Maapea said: “Youth Day is still important. The youth must be taught what 1976 was about. They fought for their education while today’s youth don’t care. They drink, fight and don’t go to school. The municipal youth desk and youth commissions must create programmes that go down to all the villages and involve the youth and teach them. The youth from political organisations must also focus on the youth. They talk about nationalisation and alike while the youth suffer on the ground. Government must also give funds directly to the schools to help improve things. There should also be more technical schools so that those who cannot afford to go to university have some skills when they finish with school”.

Harde houe in Sanlam Kanker Uitdaagreeks
Saterdag verlede week is die jaarlikse Sanlam Kanker Uitdaagreeks Gholfdag by Tubatse Chroom Klub gehou. Vrouens: Carol Wilkinson. Mnr.
