The Council also noted the Audit Committee report that showed improvement of the Municipality in the last quarter of the financial year. On provincial level things are also moving. The Executive Council met on 3 August and some of the decisions taken will influence local service delivery as government aims to establish a government complex and supporting facilities in Jane Furse. The Executive Council resolved that the Department of Co-operative Governance,
Human Settlement and Traditional affairs should engage owners of the identified land with a view of purchasing in addition to the church land for the establishment of government complex and other supporting facilities to create sustainable human settlement. They further resolved that an inter-Ministerial committee on Jane Furse Township Establishment should engage the Ministerial of Rural development and land reform to fastrack approval of the sale of land owned by the Anglican Church to Government.

Community makes a plan Local residents of Kgautšwane Village-Paeng Section came together to make a plan with their daily struggle to get water. The scarcity of clean drinking water is a common crisis in Kgautšwane Village as a whole. However, this specific group of residents wanted to change the situation and they thought out of the box in an attempt to offer a solution for the clean drinking water shortage. The project to transfer water from the mountain springs to the households was the brain child of Mr N.R Chiloane. He sold the idea to fellow community members who also felt the need to make water available for the people of Paeng at large. The project was named Thuhu after a rarely found wild animal. One of the project participants captured a specimen while they were busy working on the project. The project started by collecting money per household. Kgautšwane village is a poverty
stricken community and the source of money for most people are social grants and/or old age grants. Despite this they contributed to make the project a reality. Mr Chiloane and others devoted their time and resources, including their cars and tools to make the project a success. Mr Chiloane recruited four more community members to assist with the project and they formed a committee. 110 households were interested and willing to make financial contributions. The overall distance from which water was taken is approximately four kilometres to where the households are based. The community members have already contributed R80 000.00 and this has been used for the project to date. They are however still in need of a water purification facility so that the raw water from the mountain springs can be purified to be suitable for human consumption. The community have so contributed as much as they could and they cannot afford to make further contributions. “We appeal to government officials and the business community to help with funds for a purification facility and reservoirs” Mr Chiloane said. For more information contact Mr N.R Chiloane – Project Manager on 083 388 9927 or email ikemash76@gmail.com. (Information & photographs: Mr Mashaba).

Make your own Tharred road Mahindra says “… the removable canvas canopy helps to immerse you in the natural world around you and experience the elements close at hand.” This words from the brochure of the Mahindra Thar rang in Platinum Gazette’s test driver’s ears as he gunned the rugged vehicle past Thaba Moshate Casino at about 60 km/h. What rang louder in his ears were the vicious noise of said canvas canopy. He also remembered that just before he left the McGee dealership at Tubatse Crossing Mall in Burgersfort that the friendly personnel told him “we can get you a nice custom made harde dakkie for about R25000.” Not a bad idea at all if you want to plan to stay on tar and travel at high speed with this vehicle. It will also make it quite expensive if you ad the ‘dakkie’s’ price to the R219995 the as is vehicle will cost you. What we are saying is that you are stupid if you do that. This is not what this vehicle is meant to be. Not a highspeed cruiser? What then? The answer is in the name. Thar. It shares its name with a large populated desert between India and Pakistan. Dry, hard and uncomfortable. Way off the beaten track. You buy a Mahindra Thar if you are looking for something very strong, basic, rugged, virtually unbreakable and to be worked where you must make your own road. A Thar road, so to speak. So, we swung the vehicle around, headed off the beaten track onto village roads and no roads. The 2.5 litre common rail turbo diesel engine runs smoothly and turns strongly, producing 79 kW at 3800 r/m and 247 Nm between 1800 and 2000 r/m. This engine is coupled with a Borg Warner 4WD system that provides a 2.48 crawl ratio in low range, with high approach and departure angles, overall 200 mm clearance and a mechanical locking rear differential and auto locking hubs. There you go. The vehicle only has two seats, but up to four passengers can be accommodated in the load bay (no comfort in the back admittedly, but you will get there). Add a couple of bags of whatever and you want to transport and you have a very tough workhorse that can move over almost any terrain. Given this scenario the fact that you can’t see the instruments (speedometer) behind the rim of the steering wheel, will not present a big problem as you will most unlikely try to break a speed limit. Switchgear in the cabin works well and gear levers engage and shift smoothly. The driver’s foot well is a little bit cramped for those with bigger feet, rear view mirrors are large and clear and windows open with winders. There is a lockable compartment under the passenger seat and the front doors are lockable with a key. Strangely, there do not seem to be a lock on the tailgate. The Mahindra Thar has, like all Mahindras we experienced thus far, a highly efficient heater and air conditioner. Brakes on the vehicle are discs on the front and drums at the rear. They work very well. The front suspension is independent swingarms, while the back of the vehicle has a typical bakkie layout with rigid axle and leaf springs. While the noise at high speed may be a problem, the vehicle drives surprisingly well over uneven surfaces, on road and off-road. Admittedly, the car is not for everyone, but lots of people will benefit from a tough one like this. And they will be happy. Contact McGee & Co at 082 555 3107 if you are interested. Remember to ask about the dakkie …
