The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) announced today that the public hearings on Eskom’s Third Multi-Year Price Determination (MYPD3) Regulatory Clearing Account (RCA) Year 5 (2017/18) application and MYPD4 revenue application scheduled to take place in Kimberley and Polokwane on 21 and 31 January 2019 respectively, have been cancelled. The public hearings have been cancelled due to the low public interest to present at the hearings. NERSA is conducting public hearings on Eskom’s MYPD3 RCA Year 5 (2017/18) application and MYPD4 revenue application for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years. The public hearings started on 14 January 2019 in the Western Cape and will end on 4 February 2019 in Gauteng. Public hearings in other provinces will continue as scheduled.
On Wednesday afternoon Burgerfort town was treated to about 30mm of rain in a very short time, creating havoc trafic-wise. Vehicles and pedestrians had to negotiate much water as the storm water system of the town proved inadequate to handle all the water. The situation was aggravated by the fact that a lot of the stormwater drains are blocked with rubbish and debris, while a large number of motorists travelled hoplessly too fast in the wet conditions, some of them without lights or consideration for other road users (such as these pedestrians jumping over the unexpected stream).

Not above the law Pumpkin passion Fidelity guards buying food while parking vehicles in and trying to jump the queue to pay for that food, was some of the things that soured up the day for some customers at a local shop in Burgersfort on Saturday last week. The guards were buying food and without asking permission, pushed customers waiting in line to pay aside, to try and pay for their goods first. A person on the management team of the shop saw what was happening and asked the clients whether they had given permission for this, which was not the case. The men then had to wait their turn. Outside the shop customers were parked in by the cash in transit vehicle waiting for the guards bringing not money, but food from the shop. This week Platinum Gazette forwarded
the photographs taken during the incident to the company for a response. The following was received: “There is no question that our van was parked illegally on Saturday 12th and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers. “Our company does not condone reckless or irresponsible behaviour and we will definitely take up this matter internally as a matter of urgency. We pride ourselves on the professional conduct of our Officers who are at all times encouraged to act responsibly and professionally to ensure the safety of the asset they are transporting and the safety of the general public in the immediate vicinity. We once again apologise and thank you for the opportunity to correct this isolated conduct. Arthur Gibson: National Executive - Fidelity Cash Solutions” The incident inside the shop was not addressed in the statement issued, the newspaper requested comment for this, but by going to press nothing has been received. In the photo left the faces has been digitally altered not to be recognised as it was about the principle and not the individuals involved.
Willem le Grange is aiming to have a pumpkin among the biggest in the country when the time for weigh-in comes at the annual Giant Pumpkin Festival in Heidelberg, Western Cape this year. Willem grew up on a farm outside Burgersfort and currently works on one of the citrus farms owned by local company Naranja / Indigo Fruit Farming in Swellendam. He planted seeds he ordered from America - the Dill’s Giant Atlantic pumpkins. He also planted a seed he received from a local farmer in the area. The two different pumpkins are now growing very fast. The biggest one is currently weighing in at approximately 457kg and it can grow up to 23kg in a day during the peak growth period. At the moment his is growing approximately 11kg a day. Many factors such as the heat during the day and soil quality influence the growth. Willem’s plant is currently covering 72m2 and the plant can use up to 200 litres of water a day. He supplements the soil with fish hydrolate (sea-

grow) and seaweed (kelp). The world record for these big pumpkins stands at 1190kg and belongs to Mathias Willemijns of Belgium. The current South African record stands at 556kg. The winning pumpkins’ owners will share in cash prizes and the pumpkin seeds will be harvested as seeds going towards seed supplier Starke Ayres. Every year entrants into the competition receives a seed from each of the top 3 pumpkins of the previous year. Entries from all over the country compete for the crown and in South Africa the look of the pumpkin does not matter much. It is the weight and that it is a healthy vegetable that has not started to rot that matters. Willem has treated his one pumpkin where it started to crack while growing and has build covers for it to protect it from the elements. His family and locals are holding thumbs for him as the final stretch before the end of the competition on 9 March approaches.

In memory of Gideon Miller Gideon Miller (13), Head Boy of Steelpoort Academy in 2018, passed away last Sunday when the bus he was travelling in to his high school in Middelburg, left the road near Laersdrif in wet road conditions. This news schocked the local community and the newspaper, who practically see our children grow up in front of reporters. A report like this one is very difficult to write because we as humans can almost always not see the sense in such a tragic event, especially if you have children of your own. A memorial service for Gideon will be held at the Steelpoort AFM Church on 25 January at 10:00.

NEWS
18 JANUARY 2019
What would you like for SA The year 2019 is still young and much can change can happen, not only in the lives of individuals but also for South Africa as a country. 2018 was a year of many changes and one of the changes was the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) that is paid on all goods and services. Economists listed this as one of the single most impactful economic events to touch the lives of all South Africans last year. “The increase, necessary to combat a revenue shortfall, was not an easy political decision to make and came at the detriment of economic growth, despite renewed confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa and a recovery in the price of commodities,” said the head of Africa for financial advisory firm, deVere Acuma, Mr Gavin Smith. This year (2019) is also an important year with a general election coming up. The Institute for Race Relations (IRR) released the results of a poll done at the end of last year that predicted which parties were at that stage set to take the lead in the upcoming elections. In December predictions was still in favour of the ANC with most respondents in the poll saying they will win with a two-thirds majority vote. As well as summarising voting intentions, the IRR asked their respondents about party favourability: People may not say they’re voting for a certain party, but they can still hold them in high regard. These results were ANC: 54% favourability. DA: 28% favourability. EFF: 21% favourability. When it comes to property price predictions for 2019 it is predicted to be slow in growth. “I predict that there will be a continued move to smaller, more manageable properties - such as sectional titles and estate-style living, lock-up and go type of homes, for example - as consumers continue to feel the pinch of rising inflation and cost of living. Subsequently, I also predict that there will be fewer cash sales and more bonded transactions as the increased cost of living will necessitate higher loan-to-value amounts on property transactions” said Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, Adrian Goslett in the media at the end of 2018. He added that buyers might want to take into account the long term promises from political parties in the run-up to the election and this will slow down sales and growth in the property market in the first two quarters of 2019. When it comes to the cost of living it is predicted that another drop in the petrol price may be coming in February. A formal announcement has not been made about this, but many are hoping that another price drop
will ease the burden of living costs. In the first part of December Eskom’s load shedding was driving people crazy with frustration. At the time it was predicted that South Africans can expect much more of this in 2019 and even the years beyond. By the time of going to press there had not been any formal load shedding for the year and negotiations for the tariff hike Eskom wants approved was still underway. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they would like to achieve for themselves in 2019, but also what they would like for South Africa - their predictions, perceptions, expectations and hopes in a nutshell.
Mr Philemon Malatji said: “I want them to employ more police in South Africa this year so they can eliminate crime. I also hope for wise leaders. That our elected president would be wise, and be able to guide our country. I would like to study further. I wish to do my N3. Last year I’ve completed N2 and I would eventually want to do my trade test to qualify as a fitter”. With him are Ms Nelda Matuludi as well as Blessing and Prudence.
Mr John Malatji said: “I don’t have New Year’s resolutions, but I do have continuous goals like getting my business off the ground. For SA I think many people don’t vote with their conscience and therefore many will continue to vote for the ANC. Even a blind person can see they are going the wrong direction. We need a new government. They are failing to industrialise our country. They import many things we used to manufacture here in South Africa. The ruling party is stuck. The only way to create employment is to increase the business opportunities. Now they over tax the existing businesses. There is no positive outlook with our government. It is our power, we can change it. We can vote different and give someone else 5 years to perform. If they don’t perform, we can kick them out. Our votes have power. The burden of jobs is now falling on us, the working class because we have to share the little we have”.
Mr Njabolo Wonderman Kgwedi said: “SA is not on the right track. There is a huge lack of job opportunities. In 2019 they must create jobs. They must help the small businesses to make money. I hope in 2019 my business will improve and grow. With the elections coming, it will be us who have to wait and see because they never fulfill the promises they make before elections”.
Mr Frans Malesa said: “With the current generation generally undermining government I hope for peace. I hope in 2019 we can live in peace and that people will not misbehave and undermine the authorities. If we can all stick to what is being said and done to improve things, our tomorrow may be a whole lot better. I wish for myself good luck, health and I want to live appreciating what I have and where I am in life”.
Mr Collins Komane said: “I wish I’ll get a nice job in 2019. Government must create jobs in 2019. I believe the ANC who has now in their manifesto launch said that they will create jobs”.
Ms Isabella Mokoena said: “For 2019 I hope to get a learnership and start a career in mechanical engineering. When it comes to South Africa, I think we are under the wrong leadership. We are going to vote this year. We need a political party that will not only help themselves, but will benefit the people. SA is full of corruption, we are currently not on the right track”.

and yourself in 2019?
Mr David Holandi Mkhonza said: “For SA I hope a new party will take the lead after the election so we can have some change. For myself? I want to stick to my goals like building a house”. Mr Thamaga Magatsela said: “I wish for SA that our government can reduce the price of petrol and diesel. The cost of living is too high. SA is depending on minerals. Government must also assist that the mines do not close, so that the people can be employed and crime be reduced. We don’t want to become the next Zimbabwe. I want my family to be happy and want to be able to provide for them and support them as much as I can. I also want my kids to progress at school”.
Ms Elsie Mogowe Lekoadu said: “For SA I am hoping that the ruling party will set an example by stopping corruption. Rather use the money that is usually stolen to get poor people to start businesses and provide children with good schools. Empower people. They must also not make empty promises before the election. Job creation must also come from communities by not striking. They should instead study and get the right qualifications. I am a parent and I would like my business to grow and be recognized and lifted up through it. I want to show other women that it is possible”.
Ms Rachel Bengura said: “For South Africa I would like peace, unity and less crime. Yes, less crime and violence, especially towards the elections. For myself I want personal growth, joy and happiness. I want to be happy in all aspects of my life”.
Ms Maggie Mnisi said: “I want to settle all my debt in 2019. I also want to vote for a new party for a change. In the past we’ve been promised many things, but they don’t produce. For South Africa I wish less crime, more jobs and the abuse of drugs and alcohol to be less”.
Mr Weekend Shai said: “In 2019 I want to buy a new Golf GTi. It is my dream. In South Africa I want to see development. Especially government must develop rural areas. I think they are on track to do it”.
Mr Gift Malema said: “For South Africa I want more jobs in 2019. I think Cyril Ramaphosa is already busy creating jobs. They must also reduce the TAX this year. It is too much. This year we hope to get tenders for cleaning. We need our municipality to not employ their ‘chommies’. They also only maintain the roads where their people live because their expensive cars must not get damaged. I think the DA can rule South Africa after the election this year. The ANC came to my house to do home campaigning and they told my grandmother and myself that we should vote ANC otherwise we will not get money like grants and pensions. That is nonsense. Whatever party takes over, there will still be money given for pensions and grants. The DA can also rule”. With him is Mr Freddy Malebane. Left: Mr France Makobe said: “For myself I hope for a new job that will improve my knowledge and standard of living. For South Africa, since it is an election year, I hope that my organization – the ANC, lose the elections so there can be an alternative party or a coalition government. It seems to me that things just work better if there is not just one party. Things will be better if there is a coalition government”. Ms Sponkie Sathekge said: “For SA I hope for better infrastructure as well as water and sanitation improvements. For myself I hope for a better job and to further my studies”.
Mr Patrick Mdluli said: “I hope in 2019 we will get rid of corruption and things like drug abuse. Take nyope off the streets. I wish that during this year I’ll be able to build my children a nice house”. Mr Peter Majoro said: “Concerning the elections this year, I have much confidence in our new president. If people will give the ANC another chance to rule, there may be change from the past years. I am still staying in an area that don’t have electricity. I hope they will electrify my area this year. I also hope for jobs for our young people”.
Ms Hope Sethosa said: “I want my own family and I want to get a job. For SA I hope there will be more job opportunities”.
Left: Mr Mandla Shongwe said: “This year I want to get a promotion at work. For South Africa I want to see peaceful elections. We also expect service delivery from government”.

YouTube video inspires Michael to write a book Michael Thapelo Nyaka is proud to hold his newly published book, ‘Discovering how to live a purposeful life’ in his hands. Michael has been a full time employee of A1 Foods in Burgersfort since 2013 and says that he wrote the book on his cell phone during his lunch breaks. It took him approximately a year to complete it. “I was inspired to write the book after I watched a
YouTube video of Helen Keller. She was deaf-blind, but did not let it stop her from reaching her potential” he explains. “We don’t choose our family and we cannot choose whether they are rich or poor. When we grow up we start making choices on where we want to go with our life,” Micheal says. “It is not important how long we live in this world, but it is important what we leave behind. Nobody was born because there was a shortage of people in the world. Everyone has a unique dream or vision that demands fulfillment without making excuses”. This is what he hopes to encourage readers to do through his book. The book aims to motivate, enlighten, caution and build the reader while providing a new perspective on life. Michael feels that a relationship with God is crucial and it is reflected in the book. Taking more time to take care of your spiritual life than your physical life is important. The book also contains advice on how to learn to focus on your life while not competing with others as well as learning to control your tongue. The book includes a section where the reader can reflect and even write down their own answers on questions they may face in life and what they hope to do with the guidance of the book. Michael gives thanks to his family and especially his mother for their support during his journey to write this book and grow as an indivual. He is already working on a follow-up for this first book and people interested in buying ‘Discovering how to live a purposeful life’ can order it from him. It will cost R160 per copy. To order your copy contact Michael on 079 1919 793.
