Tel: (013) 231 8090 or 087 808 4022/3 This week’s news in the area was dominated by mines and their roles in their various communities, with Twickenham Platinum Mine annoucing a R40 million bursary project for learners in the mine’s immediate vicinity (right), while a large number of the big brass currently embroiled in the nationalisation debate visited Maandagshoek on Sunday to open the new R64 million rand tarred road (built by Modikwa Platinum Mine) connecting villages with the R37 (bottom). Mines and communities

Not only politics and the economy made news this week. On Sunday christians in and around Burgersfort partook in a peaceful march from four directions to the cross up on the hill in the centre of town. In the photograph a horn is sounded during praise and worship on the hill. More photographs inside. ... and for those with time and transport it was playtime when the higher areas around Lydenburg, Dullstroom and Steenkampsberg pass between Lydenburg and Roossenekal was covered in snow on Monday and Tuesday. R40 million for skills ‘Learners also have a responsibility’

One of the groups that received certificates (bottom).

Anglo American Platinum has committed itself towards skills development in the immediate vicinity of Twickenham Platinum Mine by making available R40 million per year for a bursary scheme. The Twickenham Programme manager, Mr Masala Mutangwa (top left), told senior learners and their teachers in the area that the mine, which will only come into production in a few years time, will need lots of skills and that learners should work hard to qualify for bursaries that are available through the scheme. Mr Mutangwa said all the specialised skills can come from the area an need not be procured from outside if learners apply their minds to their studies. The scheme was welcomed by the Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune Distrtrict Municipality, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe (upper left) and Greater Tubatse Mayor, Cllr Nkosi Josias Mahlake (left). Cllr Magabe reiterated his long-held view of partnerships between business and government to alleviate poverty by equipping people with skills to obtain jobs. Education and traditional leaders at the event focused on the responsibility of learners who should apply them to their studies and work hard, thereby not wasting the opportunities that are created for them. At the event, which was held at the mine’s Twickenham Shaft, students that successfully completed a Basic Home Maintenance Programme, also received their certificates. After all the formal speeches all the neccessary information, appplication forms and requirements were given to learners and explained before lunch was served.

The South African constitution guarantees everyone a right to have a legal representation at state expense. The day began with presentations by stakeholders educating the community about various services that are rendered by their department’s as a capacity crowd of close to three hundred people heeded the call and attended in large numbers, services such as identity application, social grants and legal advice were rendered to the villagers. “Legal Aid Advice Line aims to assist poor South Africans with immediate legal advice. With the increasing vulnerability of our children and the poor, it became inevitable that Legal Aid SA does something proactively to address these issues. Thorburn Security Solutions celebrates Women’s Day For many years Women’s Day Celebrations at Modikwa Platinum Mine was the highlight for the women in Thorburn in Mpumalanga Province. This year it was no different with Thorburn women attending the Modikwa Platinum Mine Women’s Day celebrations on 5 August 2011. The previous annual festivities at Modikwa Platinum Mine inspired the Pretoria based women to also share in Women’s Day festivities in 2011 and on 5 August 2011, under the guidance of Keitumetse Campbell (Human Resources Manager) women from Gauteng held a “festivity” at the Pretoria office. Thorburn Security Solutions Chairperson, Leba Mashao, was the guest speaker. Leba highlighted that “women should have courage in themselves, support and build one another and always go an extra mile to achieve anything that they want, because nothing is impossible.” The Pretoria function was very successful, a lot of potential was seen in the women and

one got to learn a lot about the women, their different backgrounds and difficulties they have experienced in life, which have made them to be phenomenal women. (Photograph and information: Dolf Scheepers)

ECM committed to empower women Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines (ECM) is dedicated and committed about Women in

Mining. ECM currently employ 280 women in positions right across the value chain of the business. Women accounts for 15% of the total workforce (which is much higher than the required target set in the Mining Charter of 10%). Women’s Day is a special occasion whereby the ladies of ECM are recognized for their contribution to the business, and had the opportunity to celebrate their gender. A very special day for the ladies was hosted by ECM and the Winterveld Recreational Club hall was turned into a spectacular sight. At first the ladies were motivated by Loraine Mphahlele, who is a professional entrepreneur and the

founder and Executive Director of Investments for African Women Holdings, to inspire and achieve their full potential. She highlighted to the ladies that they have a special gift of nurturing which forms part of a women’s make up, and that ladies should bring that special gift to the workplace to develop ideas, give life to new things, and to incubate ideas and implement them. She used an example of a lady who put five children through University by selling tomatoes. After her

inspiring talk, the ladies were entertained by the handsome Riba Cross Timers. The ladies thoroughly enjoyed the choir’s charm. Then the Riba Cross Civil Society Youth Choir energised the audience with their vibrant singing. Last but not least the ladies enjoyed a special lunch. As the ladies left the celebration, the words of Loraine Mphahahlele stayed with them when they remembered her saying: “Give a woman a house, and she makes it a home”.

August 6 was yet another fabulous day for Women working at Modikwa Platinum Mine as they took part in commemorating women’s day. Though celebrated earlier, the spirit of this special day was seen in the beautiful traditional garments which was the theme for this year’s dress code. Women showed up absolutely beautiful as they recognized the heroism of the Women who came together in 1956 to protest against the then Pass Law that prohibited freedom of movement. It is in honor of the accomplishment that resulted from that day (August the 9th 1956) , that Modikwa Platinum Mine Management supported the women from all business units including contractors on site in celebration and commemorate this special day. Modikwa Business Leader, Mr Mandla Nxumalo on address encouraged women to take up the challenge of filling technical positions, which were previously dominated by men. He added that these positions have now been made available and reserved for women although the response from women has been very low and disappointing. He added that more women are needed in decision making positions to ensure a balanced organization going forward. “I look forward to your contribution in making Modikwa the best Mine to work for” he said. Among the planned activities for the day was a motivational talk from International motivational speaker, Business Woman, Mother and Spiritual Leader Mrs Stella

Phetla of Gateway International Ministries. Mrs Petla expanded on a number of topics starting from Knowing yourself, Don’t Worry, Cultivate Gratitude, Foster Forgiveness to Counteract Negative Thoughts and Feelings, Money Can’t Buy Happiness, Foster Friendship and lastly expounded on the famous quote by Billy Graham ‘Hot heads and cold Hearts never Solved anything” Dr Sylvia Phiri a Pastor, Medical Doctor by profession and Motivational Speaker shared with participants on living a healthy life style. She encouraged Modikwa Women to adopt a healthier pattern of living, i.e regular medical check-up amongst others; HIV/AIDS, breast exam, pamsmear etc. further warm women to avoid regular use of laxatives, smoking and drinking alcohol habit and should drink more water. Modikwa would like to thank all women who participated in ensuring success of the event.

Will you continue to support the Springboks? Within a few weeks the Rugby World Cup will kick-off in New-Zealand. The Springboks are the defending champions, but in the past few games they’ve not been performing very well. Many reasons has been given for they poor perfomance in the current TRI Nations tournament. Despite this, the coach remains a strong believer in his team’s ability to do well in the World Cup in September. We asked readers whether they will continue to support the Springboks, even if they are performing poorly. We also asked their advice to help create the best team possible to defend the Cup next month.

Rugby World Cup: 9 September 2011 23 October 2011

Mnr.

Mr David Matemane said: “It is my country, there is no way I cannot support it. For them to perform well we need to support them - all of us - white and black. They need it to perform well”.

Mr Given Moraba, Mr Calmax Makabate and Mr Kleintjie Mametja said: “We are still supporting the Bokke. Mzanzi for sure. Proudly South African. They must believe in themselves and practice very hard. They are the champions of this trophy and they must believe it until the end. They must also go with God. Through Christ there is no failure. We wish them good luck. They are conquerors”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “Yes, I’ll support them. They must work hard and practice. They must listen to the coach although we don’t know if it is a good coach or not”.

Ms Zinhle Mangwane, Ms Rebeccah Mashaba and Ms Sarah Mashaba said: “Ja, we think and hope they will do good in the World Cup. We’ll be praying for them. They need to practice and fight for what they want, then they will win. You reap what you sow”.

Left: Mr Sydney Mhandu said: “We have to support them. They are lifting the flag. If we are not behind them, who will be? Maybe they will be motivated by our support. They will feel the responsibility to play well in the international arena”.

Ms Vinolia Thobejane, Ms Constance Magagula, Mr Judah Moshoane and Mr Andrew Moshoane said: “They are our boys and we’ll keep on supporting them. Once a Bok, always a Bok. Go Bokke go. Let’s not give critique for Div, give them all the support and confidence. De Villiers is a good coach. Let’s also support Rugby Fridays”.

Mnr.

Me.

Shout-it-now at Calvin College Calvin College students this week participated in the Shout-it-now campaign. The campaign runs under the Aurum Institute and is currently visiting schools in the area. The students then watch a video and complete an interactive questionaire. Anonimity is key and fingerprints are used for identification purposes. The questionaire helps to create a profile for each participating individual. This is based on questions regarding sexual behaviour and circumstances which can elevate the risk of HIV infection. Each student then sees a counsellor who discuss the profile with them. Especially those with a high risk profile are encouraged to get tested and know their HIV status. Testing is voluntary and the results are kept

confidential. Should a student test positive they will be given support and guidance. Follow-up visits are also done, although this is done outside the school. The school also receives feedback, but no names are ever disclosed to the teachers or governing body. On Monday when Platinum Gazette visited the school, the students were very positive and almost everyone happy to get tested and know their status. After completing the session with the counsellors they also received a R10 Shoprite shopping voucher an armband with a slogan to remind them about keeping themselves safe. The whole high school participated.

Above and below: Happy to show off their shopping vouchers and armband after a session with the Shout-it-now group.

‘Out of the way, I know first aid!’ Calvin College students received training in first aid. The course took place in May and grade 11 and 12 learners attended the programme. This covered a variety of topics such as CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), chocking, primary and secondary surveying, wounds bleeding, shock, unconsciousness, fainting, fractures, burns as well as head and spinal injuries. The learners were given the opportunity to perform CPR on a simulation doll, named Peter. They also practised dressing different types of fracture wounds by pretending to be patients as well as using equipment such as a spider harness by strapping peers down. The learners and staff who attended had to pass a theory test as well as a practical demonstration. Their certification is valid The group of learners received their first aid certificates last week. for three years.

Flippie starting as a pro-am Flippie Nortjé recently finished his PGA studies at the Centurion Golf Academy. He is currently doing an apprenticeship under the guidance of Louis Coetzee.

Flippie started playing at the age of 8 when his grandfather, Flip taught him. Flippie now dreams of finishing his apprenticeship and eventually coaching players in the area. “Currently there are no Pro qualified coaches in the area and there is so much talent,” Flippie told the newspaper on Saturday last week. He will now be able to play in the pro-am league with events such as the Sunshine Tour. His handicap is a scratch. He will have to play four scores of 75 or better (player ability) and also have to teach or coach a specific amount hours before he’ll be able to qualify as a pro player. He hopes to achieve this by January or February next year.
