Several elections later and still no bridge
The village of Maseven near De Hoop Dam is split in two by a dry river. A tarred road from Ngwaabe lends access to the village and a dirt road from the R555 gives acces from the other side. Joining the two Masevens, which is actually only one, by means of a bridge, has seemed not to be possible by consecutive ‘democratic governments’ through the years. Maybe after the next election ...
Intent on killing? A large number of trucks on our roads have a total disregard of road rules and do not mind into bullying smaller vehicles, even if it causes accidents with the accompanying injuries, death and trauma. We contacted the owners of truck by telephone, got an email address and tried to get a response. Still no answer when we went to press.
Running dry
This photograph was taken on Monday this week where the Ohrigstad River passes under the Ohrigstad Pilgrims Rest road (R533) just north of the dam wall. The dam is currently 13,5 percent full in comparison with last year’s 59,6 percent. The weater exciting the dam is but a paltry stream ... The Buffelkloof Dam that feeds the Burgersfort environs was 54,7 percent full in comparison to last year’s 99,4 percent (source: DWAF website on 18 October 2018).
CASA calls for action against illegal gambling CASA, the body that represents the interests of South Africa’s legal casino gambling industry, as well as the public it serves, has noted an alarming increase in illegal gambling. It warns that if immediate action is not taken to stamp out these criminal activities, the negative impact on the economy, and society in general, could be far reaching. As CASA’s Chief Executive Officer, Adv. Themba Ngobese explains, “Not nearly enough is being done to combat illegal gambling. There are laws in place but they are meaningless without a firm and consistent commitment to enforce them. Unfortunately, there will always be people who believe that illegal gambling and illegal casino activities are somehow victimless crimes but nothing could be further from the truth.” Ngobese elaborates by explaining that illegal gambling operations are eroding the revenues of licensed casinos and thereby negatively impacting everything from job security, corporate social investment budgets to their ability to support the economy through taxes. Licensed casinos currently pay a massive portion (around 36%) of the value that they generate to the state through various local, provincial and national taxes and levies, and even a small percentage decrease in revenues can result in dire consequences for a treasury that is already under pressure. “In the year ended March 2017, our members experienced losses in revenue of almost 2%, attributable in large part to aggressive illegal gambling activities. That may not sound like much but for an industry that contributes almost R6 billion in taxes and levies, a few percent points can have a massive knock on effect,” says Ngobese. Ngobese implores Government to step up with a deliberate and concerted effort to enforce its laws to protect the regulated gambling industry and the public.
The newspaper receives complaints from a regular basis from reader, complaining about the filth around them in towns and next to the roads in the area. As can be seen the local municicipality does try and improve the situation with more new skips.. We saw these ones in this week. We do not know for how long it just stood there, bute later in the week saw that some of them were moved to new locations. In the mean time everyone must work together to keep the environment clean ...

Die vroue het elk ‘n fooi betaal om hul uniforms te dra en dit was deel van ‘n geldinsameling vir die kerk. Die vroue is bedank vir hul goeie ondersteuning van die inisiatief. Teachers’ Day celebrated
Proudly South African disgrace
On Friday last week Teachers’ Day was celebrated at Maelebe Primary School. “Every teacher and leader needs motivation from time to time and deserve to be acknowledged,” said Reverend T. Ndlovu who is the youth coach at the school. Teachers are also often victims of bullies, they become discouraged, are looked down upon, blamed for various things and are vulnerable to depression. The educators were encouraged to keep up their hard work with enthusiasm. Ndlovu delivered a message that God can be trusted while we are under pressure. The event was concluded with fellowship and refreshments. The principal Mr JM NKoana, the teachers and the Kohin company were thanked for making the day’s event possible.
Tattered and weathered national flags are proudly displayed at local schools and even the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court. National symbols such as the flag are meant to be something people take pride in, but by the look of these flags photographed during the course of the week, they should rather opt to totally take down the flags and not display anything at all. Or perhaps approach possible sponsors for new flags. If the state of these flags are any indication of the respect and pride South Africans take in these symbols, society may be in need of some serious education. Laws governing these flags require it to be lowered at night if not displayed in a well lit place.

Sold A bus to catch out Chicken (or Dikgogo) is one of the most popular food items in the area. Last week this vendor went out of stock - perhaps because the roads were blocked and delivery of new chicks was not possible? This week however it was back to business as usual.

On 27 October 2018, evangelist Angus Buchan will host his next big event in Pretoria. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the ‘It’s time’ event. A local benefactor is sponsoring two buses as transport to the event. Anyone who would like to attend, but don’t have their own way of getting there is welcome. Unfortunately, these buses can only accommodate a limited amount of people and bookings on the bus will be done on a first come, first serve base.
Should you want to make use of the opportunity to attend the event by getting on one of the buses, please contact 083 719 1118 for bookings. Time of departure from Burgersfort will be confirmed when bookings are made. Those going to the event should make sure that they take along enough of their own food and water as the event is far from any shops and due to the high traffic volumes expected, the return of the bus may be very late.
