Listen to us Blydepoort Canyon Resort and Conference Centre saw a large number of youthful entrepreneurs from Sekhukhune District gather at the venue last week Thursday and Friday to launch the district branch of the Limpopo Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industries. From the start of the conference it was clear that young entrepeneurs yearns to be listened to and to be supported by government and industry. The president of of the body in Limpopo, Mr Wesley Maringa explained that the youth is a ticking time bomb and that future unemployment and poverty cannot be fought if entrepreneurial young people are not helped to help themselves. Questions from entrepreneurs to Mr Maringa also highlighted the fact that young entrepreneurs are almost always overlooked when businesses like mining houses are approached for a simple service contract. The example of providing supplies like toilet paper to mine was used and the question was asked “how difficult can it be for a mine to buy toilet paper from a small entrepreneur in his vicinity, rather than buy it it in bulk from a large service provider in a city far away?” Meanwhile the government’s aid to small entrepreneurs was stuck in red tape, and because it was centralised at one office of the National Youth Development Agency “they only give attention to our applications after we have turned madalas and we get rejected on the grounds of age!” After a number of speakers gave their views over the course of the two days, the following declaration was accepted: “We, the young entrepreneurs of Sekhukhune district, convened on the 11-12 September 2014 at Blyde Canon Forever Resort under the theme “breaking new grounds for youth entrepreneurship in Sekhukhune. We discussed the state of entrepreneurship, the state of SMME contractor development, contribution by the mining houses in youth economic development and the role and impact of
district and local municipalities in economic development. We declare that our constituencies remain unemployed and therefore shall transform them from being job seekers to employers. We will roll out road shows and seminars to mobilize and encourage the youth to tap into enterpreuniorship space. All institutions meant to offer financial support should deal away with the red tapes. Provincial structures must be empowered with powers to take decision and be able to finalize applications for funding, municipalities must integrate their youth programmes to address economic participation and development, municipal bylaws must respond to the economic needs of young people, all state institution should respond to youth accords on obligation of procurement activities. All private institutions involved in mining activities should trade 70% with the youth, they must produce a programme of skills transfer and development, mining houses must respond to the youth according aspects of locality. Municipalities must accommodate the chamber in their LED strategic committees, during IDP deliberations the municipalities must take on board young people, on its programme of municipal procurement, 70% must be given to local young people, therefore youth desk, youth council and municipalities must do entrepreneurship seminars. Municipalities must also rotate their data base; none should receive orders 2 times in 3 monsths before all have received a turn. At the end of the conference an executive committee for Sekhukhune District was elected. They are Chairperson : Mosana Dipuo, Deputy Chairperson : Maoto Thomane, Secretary : Ngele Themba, Deputy Secretary : Selatishi Jacob, Treasurer : Makola Desmond, Additional Member: Khunou Prinsloo, Senong Hunadi, Mashegwane Mavis, Madihlaba Daphney and Mohlala Karabo.

Roads under construction Various roads in Burgersfort are currently under construction. This results in slow traffic flow and alternative routes in some cases. The Greater Tubatse Municipality asked the public to be patient and to still obey the rules of the road for the duration of the work.
Obey the rules and be patient Drivers in Burgersfort and Praktiseer are requested to obey the rules of the road and be patient. This was the request from the Traffic Chief, Victor Lekwadu this week. Various roads are currently under construction and motorists are requested to obey the road rules. Where traffic lights are out of order they should be treated as four way stop streets. Some of the traffic lights had been out for months, but the municipality is in the process of having this fixed. The trouble with these are twofold as they are waiting for components to be delivered so that the control boxes can be fixed. These were damaged during protest marches earlier the year. “We appeal to the public not to damage public property such as traffic lights when they protest about service delivery. Not only does it cost money to fix, but it can sometimes take months for the relevant parts to be delivered”. The second part of the problem is the electricity supply to many of the lights. Eskom is in the process of installing individual metering units for these lights so that the municipality can be billed for this. Only once this has been installed, the lights will have the power it needs to work again. Drivers are requested to be vigilant on the roads - also in town. Areas such as the robot near the taxi rank are high risk areas and drivers should lock their doors. Complaints about taxi drivers not obeying the road signs for the turning lane are proving difficult to address as there is no space to pull over culprits. The municipality is however in the process of negotiating for an alternative route for taxi drivers to use coming in and out of town. Lekwadu invites the public to contact him personally should they have any traffic concerns. He can be reached on 013 231 1000.
SAPS search school for illegal objects On 17 September 2014 the Leboeng SAPS paid Mohlatsengwane High School a surprise visit. The school was searched for illegal objects and drugs. The police is aiming to create crime free schools that is a safe learning environment. Sixteen cellphones were seized from the
learners. The station commander of Leboeng, Capt. Solomon Moholane address the learners after the search. He warned them to stay away from criminal activities and not to bring illegal objects to school. (Information: Const. MA Sibatan)
Parents asked to work with the SAPS The Leboeng SAPS station management, led by Capt. Solomon Moholane met with the parents and SGB of Maokeng Secondary School after a number of burglary cases were reported from the school. Capt. Moholane told the parents that they must work hand in hand with the SAPS to fight crime and prevent more such cases. He told the community to report any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect in these cases. He also emphasised that the
parents must help protect the school property as they would protect their own property. The school is the community’s asset and it is the key to creating bright futures for the children in the area. He requested the parents to report it if they find any property in their home that they suspect belongs to the school. Anyone with information can contact Detective Constable Tumelo Shayi on 082 954 1798. (Information: Const. MA Sibatana).
New station commander for Burgersfort SAPS Lieutenant Colonel NR Malatji has been appointed as the new station commander for Burgersfort police station. She is no stranger to the area as she previously worked as the Visible Policing Commander at the Tubatse police station. Burgersfort will be the 8th station she is serving at. She has also worked at Seshego and spend some time at the Provincial Police offices. “I think my superiors knew I am not afraid of challenges,” she said about her appointment. To her being a police officer is “a calling from God”. “I’ve always wanted to be a police officer and I’ll die one,” she said. She warned the public to be vigilant when it comes to crime. Theft is a big problem. Especially at the robot near the taxi rank at Castle Square. “Lock the doors and make sure that your possessions are out of reach. We are also appealing to the community to assist us when they see crime happening there. If you see someone grabbing things from a vehicle and running away, apprehend him or her and call the police”. People should also not be caught by stories of magic and they should not trust
strangers. Be vigilant at ATM banks in town as there is a problem of syndicates cloning cards and taking money from unsuspecting individuals”. The public can expect the police to increase their visibility and they would like to join hands in the fight against crime. The public is invited to contact Colonel Malatji on 082 958 0208.

MPAC hearing at GTM On Friday last week the Sekhukhune Distric Municipality’s MPAC committee held a hearing at Greater Tubatse Municipality’s council chambers. The powers of the distric council had been divided into legislative and executive arms. The Executive is headed by the Executive Mayor assisted by the MMCs. The Municipal Manager and the five departments are under the Executive’s power. The Legislature is headed by the Speaker who
as far as Council management is concerned is assisted by the Chief Whip. The Legislature has committees that do oversight on behalf of council, portfolio committees which are aligned to the municipal departments and standing committees such as MPAC. The MPAC committee is a section 79 committee of Council and they have been delegated the powers to convene hearings and interrogate reports from the executive arm of Council on behalf of Coucil. Their overall function is to safeguard the public purse. Council referred the Auditor General’s Report to MPAC on 27 March 2014. Fighting the filth It may seem like an endless battle and a huge insurmountable problem, but the Greater Tubatse Municipality is trying to address the problem of waste through a programme called ‘Youth Jobs in Waste’. The programme is funded the national Department of Environmental Affairs an this week the targeted Kgautswane (Rietfontein) near Ohrigstad to make the community aware of how they can contribute towards managing the dirt that is engulfing us. The group started at the Kguatswane Thusong Service Centre where they addressed a number of people at the clinic. Various speakers from the youth group, as well as the municipality’s representative informed their audience about the different types of waste and how to dispose of it. Members of the group made the audience aware of the dangers of medical waste such as bandages with body fluids on it and the steps they should take to dispose of it safely. Likewise they were informed that organic waste could be used to make compost, while a lot of other waste such as glass and plastic can be recycled. In this regard they introduced them to Mr Collen Mojela who is a young entrepreneur. He collects waste that can be recycled from villages and people were encouraged to contact him in this regard. It was explained that dumping all kinds of rubbish on open spaces and next to the roads is not the answer to too much waste and that the burning of waste also creates all kinds of problems. As Kgautswane is home to a number of vulnerable heritage sites, the group left the clinic and cleaned up near these sites to set an example to the community with regards to waste management and littering.

Rehabilitated areas get a boost during Arbour Week Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines celebrated Arbour Week (beke ya go gaša mehlare) with the rest of South Africa between 1 and 7 September 2014. The aim of Arbour week is to promote better knowledge of trees and in particular indigenous trees. It stresses the necessity for everyone to plant trees and care for them. It highlights the vital role of trees in our lives and contributes to the achievement of a green, dignified and healthy environment in all parts of South Africa. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is responsible for the campaign. On 5 September 2014 ECM went back to rehabilitaed areas and planted 150 indigenous trees such as red wild berries, fever trees and camel thorn. These trees were selected because they are indigenous to this area, adapt quickly, uses less water and are quick growers.
The celebration started with sunflower seeds and pots being handed to all employees at the Central Offices. The employees are encouraged to grown their own sunflowers. Eastern Chrome Mine General Manager, Mr
Greening the planet at Tubatse Tubatse Chrome employees participated in Arbour Month celebrations at the plant. During an event called “Plant a Legacy” more than 60 fever trees were planted. The day was filled with a sense of team spirit and achievement by making the world a little greener. (Information & photographs: Tubatse Chrome).
Emile Britz kick started the planting at Doornbosch Old Opencast. Then they proceeded to Lannex Broken Hill. Both mine managers (Kobus Horn and Zenzile Moni) were present during the planting. ECM thanked all
the Training Centre learners who also participated by digging holes and who will continue planting the trees. (Photographs & Information: Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines)

Tubatse Masters was unstopable On Saturday last week Tubatse Masters visited Classic FC in Kgotlopong Village for a friendly soccer match. The game was hosted at Kgotlopong Primary School. From the first whistle the Masters’ team displayed good football skills and created opportunities to score, but failed to beat the Classic goalkeeper. With a few minutes to go before half time, Jerial Movundlela got an opportunity outside the Classic box and struck a powerful shot into the net to make the half time score 2-1 in favour of the Mastes.
