Traffic woes continue
Maelebe Primary School celebrates Mandela Day with focus on resources Tubatse Chrome and Kohin established a resources centre at Maelebe Primary School. This week the school turned their focus back to this centre when they celebrated Mandela Day on 18 July 2018. The day started with a lecture from some of the teachers, but the the learners got busy cleaning, renovating and improving the resources centre at the school. The learners also experienced what it is to give back and the meaning of the call for 67 minutes of volunteer work to improve lives around us. The day’s theme was “Making a difference”. The children also received valuable lessons about the importance of making the right decisions for their future. The school again thanked Tubatse Chrome and Kohin for their support and involvement. 20 JULY 2018 Traffic woes continued in Burgersfort this week as taxis still blocked roads, picked up passengers anywhere they like and jumped the traffic queue to bully their way in at the front of the lane - this while blocking the road for vehicles making use of the slipway. Some of these things happened in plain sight of local traffic officials as can be seen in the photograph on the far left. This photograph was taken on Saturday morning and the taxi simply stopped in the road, put on his hazzards and picked up passengers. A passing traffic officer chose to simply ignore this behaviour. Oncoming traffic had to change lanes to avoid hitting the taxi. Heavy vehicles also simply stop on the sidewalks in town, driving over the newly installed storm drain covers and sometimes even blocking the road as they don’t properly fit on the sidewalks. (Also read the letter from a concerned resident on about these issues on page 3).
Funds for development of innovative and competitive technological uses of PGM Anglo American plc’s 78% owned subsidiary, Anglo American Platinum Limited, this week announced that its subsidiary, Anglo Platinum Marketing Limited (APML), has subscribed for interests in two UK based venture capital funds, with a total aggregate commitment of $100 million. Anglo American Platinum’s commitment to the Funds is matched by a $100 million commitment from South Africa’s Government Employees Pension Fund represented by the Public Investment Corporation SOC Ltd (PIC). The Funds will be managed through an independent fund management business, AP Ventures LLP, led by two experienced former APML executives. The Funds have been established to invest globally in companies which support the development of innovative and competitive technological uses of platinum group metals (PGM). The first Fund will hold certain of APML’s existing investments which have been made under APML’s PGM investment programme. The second Fund will be established to make new investments.

Tubatse SEZ coming soon The MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism in Limpopo (LEDET), Mr Seaparo Sekoati says the Limpopo government is steadfast in its commitment to roll out the industrialisation programme. MEC Sekoati was addressing businesspeople at a breakfast session and seminar on the Township and Rural Industry Economy that was hosted by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) in partnership with LEDET at the Seshego Industrial Park last week. “As a province, we are steadfast in our commitment to roll out the industrialisation programme in order to improve the performance of manufacturing sector which has the highest multipliers in job creation, economic development and wealth creation. This will be done through the industrial clusters that have been mapped in line with our spatial comparative and competitive advantages,” said Sekoati. He listed the industrial clusters as horticulture and forestry in the Tzaneen and Vhembe areas, red and white meat cluster in all the five districts, platinum cluster in Tubatse area, coal and petro-chemical cluster in the Lephalale area, logistics in Polokwane, as well as the metallurgical, agro and logistics clusters in the Musina-Makhado area. ”The need for creating an enabling environment for the private sector to partner with us on industrialisation cannot be over-emphasised. Research has proven that economies which produce high-end complex products are richer
than those who rely heavily on the primary sector. It is therefore imperative that the province focuses on supporting and strengthening of the identified industrial clusters as well as the strategic value-chains,” emphasised Sekoati. He added the province was making significant progress in building its manufacturing capability through the Special Economic Zones (SEZs). “The Musina-Makhado SEZ has already been designated and we are in the process of implementation. We are also in the process of submitting the application for the designation of the Tubatse SEZ,” he announced. Sekoati also said that the Limpopo government was intensifying efforts to revitalise and build the ‘plug and play facilities’, in the form industrial parks, that conform to shared production facility principles in all the regions of the province.
Village representatives elected On Saturday last week the people of Majaditshukudu Village came together with Ward 24 Councillor, Hluphi Mnisi to elect representatives. Those elected are representing their village in areas like religion, tradition and the youth. They will participate in municipal programmes and engagements. Mnisi encouraged especially the youth to participate and not engage in vandilazing property. The villagers were very disappointed when service delivery could not be discussed. “She said it is not part of her agenda” they (Information & photograph: Moses Mashaba) complained.
Speaking out about out-of-control traffic L.M Tlaka responds to a photograph and caption about a taxi blocking traffic while a traffic officer looks on published on page 3 of Platinum Gazette of 13 July 2018: “Day in and day out we see evidence of reckless driving and parking in town. Our local newspapers also expose those caught on the wrong side of the law. We see taxis parking or even stopping on the wrong side of the road, bakkies with humongous loads and normal private cars crossing through the red robots. All these things are happening right before our very eyes. The big question is; how long shall this be? We have commuters who do not care how they reach their destination. They are oblivious of things so much so, that they don’t mind if their driver stops after a robot and infringe the movement of other motorists and even put their lives in danger. Doing shopping has also turned into a nightmare. Just a quick park and buy can turn into a long wait for freedom. You come back from the shop and you find that somebody has parked you in and he/she is not even in the car. You are rushing for an appointment and somebody has closed you in. You are therefore forced to wait for him/her to come back after hours. We even have road signs that do not serve any purpose. How do you justify the no U-turn sign while people are just turning,
even in the vicinity of a traffic police officer. If you don’t buy my story, just wait by the robot and observe how many cars still cross over, even when the robot has turned red. There is no right of way in our lovely town. In short, I believe this is the right time for all of us to step up to the plate. If you are a commuter, learn to speak when things are not right. As an official, you are a servant, please do serve us with dignity and integrity. It’s high time that our traffic officials do their jobs. If you see any picture of any driver breaking the law on any newspaper, you owe the public. What have you done since the newspaper has exposed the law breaker? We always see visuals on the paper, yet none of our officials get back to say this is what has been done with the driver. We don’t see that happening in other places. The story of the guy who was shoved into a coffin (Victor Mlotshwa), was seen on facebook and then the law took over from there. To our traffic officials, it is now or never, our situation is dire and slowly getting out of hand. We are slowly losing the battle. To our taxi officials, we can manage this by instituting strict fines on the law breakers as they also tarnish the image of the association that you worked so hard for with tears, sweat and blood. To the public at large, let’s get the power back by voicing out where possible. This is my view, what’s yours?”
