As Platinum Gazette went to press yesterday, the result of the Municipal elections in Greater Tubatse Municipality was not yet finalised. The election itself went without major problems, but they did occur, like in Penge, where the Sekhukhune District Mayor, Mogobo, David Magabe (top left), cast his vote. Ballot papers arrived late, but voting was well under way by 09:00. Long lines were not observed and in areas such as Kutullo, the taverns were rowdy and much busier than the voting stations. Of all the parties contesting, the Democratic Alliance put up the bravest fight, but it was soon clear from preliminary results that tha ANC will remain in the seats with a large majority vote. What will change is the faces, with some prominent names that will not be seen in the future as they were removed from lists, while some will be redeployed. All-in-all a successful day, and the haste with wich services were delivered during the past month a bonus! Bottom left is former Ward one councillor, Josias Mahlake, busy casting his vote at Banareng voting station at Leboeng.

Operation NOKO shakes up illegal immigrants

The Tubatse Cluster of the Police last week Saturday launched a successful raid on citrus farms near Ohrigstad, arresting more than a hundered workers working illegally on farms, where they are employed by farmers to assist with the harvest of citrus fruit. An influx of workers, most of them illegal from neighbouring countries occurs every year with the citrus harvest, with farmers even fetching them from the border, says a policeman. There are no control over these people and a number of them do not return to where they come from. There is no work for them after the harvest and some of them get involved in crime. As far as could be determined, no single crime was reported at Ohrigstad Police Station since 101 Swazi and 4 Mozambican nationals were arrested last week Saturday. Operation NOKO as it was named, was a joint operation between the Tubatse Police Cluster, the Police air

wing and officials from several other government departments, such as immigration officers, the Department of Labour, Home Affairs and Nature Conservation. The operation did not only target the illegal workers, but also the the farmer who employed them. One policeman told the newspaper that the farmers are creating problems with regards to security and crime in the whole area, including the farms where they worked as temporary labourers. As soon as they have no income, they go back and steal form the farmers. The farmer were charged for contravention of section 42 (13) vii, read with 49(B) and 6 of the relevent act for harboring and accomodation 105 illegal foreigners, knowing that they are illegal. The arrested illegal immigrant will be deported according to Constable Mantshwane, spokesperson for Origstad SAPS.

Below left: A Police assisted with the operation on Friday. Below are some of the containers where the temporary labourers live while on the farms.

Office, classes gutted - ‘Not related to the election, service delivery or the mines’

One of the voting stations for the Muncipal Elections in Ga- Masha near Steel Bridge had to be moved to the adjacent government service buildings on Wednesday because three classrooms were totally destroyed by fire after been set alight the during the night. Greater Tubatse Municipality spokesperson, Mr Kubane Tolo (in the photograph), showed the newspaper around at the scene at Ngwanangwato Senior Secondary School on Wednesday. He told the newspaper that the arson had nothing to do with the elections or service delivery, or with communities’ issues with mines in the area, but probably stems from a quarrel between pupils and the school’s principal. Negotiations between the parties broke down earlier this week. Mr Tolo told the newspaper the security guard guarding the terrain saw a fire in one classroom, and also saw two figures running away and disappearing through the fence at the back. He could do nothing to stop the fire, which was started in a classrom used as an office and a library. The provincial commissioner of Police also visited the scene by helicopter and the election in the area was in no way jeopardized. Driving away from the scene a tyre was burning in the main road from Jane Furse (quite a long way from the school). Residents quickly explained “this has nothing to do with the school, this one is about the mines, Two Rivers and Xstrata. The people are still not happy”.

A warm winter with Ngululu Bulk Carriers Ngululu Bulk Carriers this week continued on their promise from last year when they donated blankets to especially elderly people from villages in the area surrounding their operations in Steelpoort. The function was attended by various Ngululu employees, including their CEO Mr Freddy Sinthumule. Municipal employees and members of the outgoing municipal council, Kgoshis as well as community

members attended the event. Last year the company started with the initiative and will continue in the future. To them it is important that the communities in which they operate know that they are important and that Ngululu wants to give back as well. This was initially a three year project which is now in its second year. Apart from the blankets, school uniforms were also donated to families which were identified with the help of the Kgoshi. These children’s progress are also monitored in school as they are not just given something and left to their own devices afterwards. The blankets were received under much joyful singing and dancing. Keeping with tradition, the guests at the event was served a warm meal before departing back to their various homes.

Last week Friday the Department of Mineral Resources presented Mr Sean O’Connor, business leader of Modikwa Platium Mine with their Safety Achievement Flag. This flag is awarded every year in four categories. These are Ultra deep gold and platinum mines (in excess of 2 000m below surface), shallow to deep gold and platinum mines (less than 2 000m below surface), coal mines and other mines. Modikwa falls into the shallow to deep category. The criteria used for this award is an assessment of three years’ safety records. This includes number of days lost for the incidents incurred on the mine and then this is compared to the previous three years to determine the mine’s improvement. Modikwa is in line to win this award for a second consecutive period, provided they can enhance their safety performance during 2011. Previous winners of the award includes Fairview Gold Mine, Union Platinum Mine JV, Harmony Joel, Sheba Gold Mine, Eastern Platinum (Lonmin), Wertern Platinum (Lonmin), Karee Platinum and Amandelbult Platinum. The mine is entitled to fly the flag for one year, or until a fatality occurs. According to Mr O’Connor Modikwa follows a simple strategy that hinges on three concepts: Zero Mindset, No Repeats and Simple Standards. “We accumulate fatality free shifts by setting the simple target of how many weeks to the next million, but on a daily and weekly basis we measure and report on incidents. If we are successful in controlling these, we eliminate the injuries and ultimately the fatal incidents” he said. He also said that there are still too many incidents for them to relax on safety. O’Connor thanked everyone who contributed to the achievement and encouraged all their employees to keep their focus on safety. The Modikwa Clinic choir performed at the event and had the audience on their feet with their cheerful song.Ms René Joubert (photograph below) handed the flag to Mr O’Connor. She also explained what a massive achievement it is for a mine to be one of the four category winners.

What do you think about the 21 May predictions? Around the world there are people who believe that 21 May 2011 will be judgement day. They are following predictions made by Harold Camping (89) a preacher in Oakland, California. According to Camping judgement day will start on 21 May 2011 at 18:00 (US time). He claims that Jesus Christ will return to the world and take 2% of the world’s population with Him to heaven. Camping has made previous predictions of when judgement day will come. The last prediction he made was for September 1994. Especially in the USA where Camping is the president of a radio station, people are very aware of his predictions and many follow him as their leader. His teachings are however far from that of the Christian Reformed Church (of which Camping previously was a member) and churches in the Reformed and Presbyterian tradition which believes the following from Matthew 24: 42 - 44: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him”. We asked readers if they have heard about Camping’s teachings and what they believe.

Mr George Nhlapo said: “It is not going to happen. According to the Bible nobody will know the time or the date”.

Mr Trevor Bazuka Mathavha said: “No, I don’t believe in that. It is too soon. According to the Bible you will never know the judgement day”.

Mr Riba Danny said: “I don’t believe in it. I’m a Christian and only God knows when the end of the world will be. God will not generalize. I believe each individual is judged when they pass away”.

Mr Vusi Madonsela said: “I’ve heard about it. I’ve seen placards with that message, but I don’t believe in it”.

Mr Rodney Ralikhwatha, Mr Moses Ramalepe and Mr Bheki Mthali said: “You will never know when the world ends. If it comes on Saturday, we’ll be enjoying life with each other as friends”.

Mr Patrick Makine said: “We don’t believe in that. Of course it will not be the end of the world”.

Mr Shadrack Masuku said: “All the talk is just rumours. Everything is on God’s time. We believe in God and only God will know the time, not a human on this world. We have to believe in God and that Jesus died for us and follow the Bible, that is the only way.

Me.

Volgens my is dit twak. Net God weet wanneer die einde van die wêreld en die oordeelsdag sal wees”.

Ms. Emma Zwane said: “I don’t believe that. Only the Creator who knows everything will know. Nobody will know when the world’s time is up”. Regs: Me. Jolandi Briel en Me. Zitha van der Wal sê: “Nee, dis soos die Bybel sê jy sal nie die dag, datum of tyd weet nie. Ons steur ons nie daaraan nie”. By hulle is Mienke van der Wal.

Mnr. Dries Viljoen en me. Annatjie Viljoen sê: “Ons glo nie daaraan nie. Die Here het sy eie tyd. Net Hy sal weet. As dit gebeur, wanneer ookal, is ons reg daarvoor en opgewonde”.
