The second week of May is usually the time of the year when the trees of the veld start to dry and display brilliant rust colours, just after the apex of the flowering of the aloes. The announcement is clear, winter is here. While a large number of residents in the area still depend on wood and other means of energy in winter, apart from electricity, Eskom said the utility is continuing to deliver u ninterrupted electricity supply with no load shedding having being experienced in the last nine months. In a statement on Tuesday (17 May 2016), the power utility said it is progressing well with the maintenance of its power generating plants.

“To date, we have not implemented load shedding in nine months, except for 2 hours and 20 minutes. This is due to a number of factors including leadership involvement, added capacity and improved plant performance,” said Eskom. “We have previously reported our improved plant performance which has meant plant breakdowns, including other capacity loss factors, have decreased from 18% down to 12% in seven months,” it said. As far a water is concerned, it seems as if the water levels of dams in in the area has stabilised to a certain extent, with not a very large week-on-week fluctuation during the past three weeks, as if the cooler weather and decreased farming activity contributed to limiting consumption.

Better access for Mafarafara

There was a signpost to Mafarafara, but it is gone now. Luckily Google Earth still has it labelled. If you do not know where to go, and precisely where to turn, chances are slim that you will find this village next to the Olifants River on the first try. Mafarafara is not exactly remote, however. Travel from Alverton near Burgersfort to Kgautswane (Rietfontein) on the back road. Just after the tar ends you turn left at a soccer field. The road heads through a narrow foresty kloof next to a stream. Keep on going, through another stream or two, and you are there. Except in the rainy season. Then you are going nowhere, not even to Mafarafara ... Now, luckily, work has begun to make the road easier and an access bridge is under construction. Now the concrete parts must go through the kloof...

Psalm 27:4 NIV One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. (These zebra youngsters in the Kruger National Park was photographed by reader Alicia Fourie)

The chaotic situation with regard to Burgersfort’s traffic, is not getting better. The R555 from Steelpoort intersection with the R37 from Polokwane remains a problem en two lanes instead of one as seen in the photograph remain a problem. Everybody understands cash-in-transit must move as straight and fast as possible between two points. Nobody understands bullying from the left side ...

Tebele needs your help Snippets

David Tebele from Tsakane Village near Steelpoort loves being creative and his artistic flair has seen him design various things, including a school emblem, and impressions of Nelson Mandela, animals and many more. David is currently a grade 10 learner at Gobetse High School in the Ngwaabe Circuit. His dream is to one day persue a career as a mechanical engineer. He is hoping to be able to attend classes at the CN Phatudi College to study and learn new skills. He would then also like to give back to the community. Tebele’s family has the same story as so many disadvantaged families in South Africa dreaming of a better future. They don’t have the financial resources to even begin making his dream of a career come true. His mother works as a domestic worker in Steelpoort and will not be able to afford any tertiary studies. His teachers echo the fact that David is talented and they hope an opportunity arises to give him a step towards his dream. The financial troubles has however not stopped David from dreaming. That is why he is using his art to try and generate awareness and perhaps also raise some money for his future. They are in the process of drawing up plans to one day create a Nelson Mandela Lodge and Eco Tourism venture that will be a beacon in Africa. Anyone who would like to assist David, make use of his artistic services for design or painting or get involved with the project for the lodge can contact his mother, Miss Selina Tebele on 0762338747.
