In this regard Provincial Treasury and the Office of the Premier have seconded a team of senior officials to assist the department to turn performance around in matters of Supply Chain Management, Governance, Financial Management, Records Management and Asset Management. Yes! Greater Tubatse Municipality this week fixed the robot where the R555 road from Steelpoort enters Burgersfort and crosses to Tubatse Crossing Mall. An official on the scene said “people must be careful and adhere to the lights. Look at that debris there, just last night somebody almost drove down the robot again. Everybody must work together to keep it working.” Maybe not big news in the city, but for Burgersfort working lights are major news. Two sets of robots stil remain to be fixed. The one between Autozone and Dunlop and the one near Magaba Filling Station. “We are in the process of getting them fixed together, maybe in the next week or two” the official commented. Meanwhile pointsmen and traffic officers seems to man congested crossings in town, especially with the stormwarter construction still ongoing. (Positive! - editor)

Indian nationals trading at the Khadima Centre near Boxer and at Platinum City Complex. The SAPS is discouraging owners of second-hand shops to buy stolen property. The SAPS will continue to monitor shops and if suspected stolen property is found, the traders will be arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen goods. (Information: Const. Copper found
Burgersfort police officers were monitoring protest action on the R555 road on 11 August when they stopped a white bakkie. The vehicle was loaded with bundles of copper cables. The driver, a 35year old male was taken into custody and will be charged with possession of suspected stolen property. (Photographs & Information: Const. Victoria Maluleka, Burgersfort SAPS. Say no to “love under the tree” The Burgersfort SAPS in partnership with the SAPS Youth Desk, Love Life, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Women Against Crime hosted a crime awareness campaign on 14 August 2015. The theme of the campaign was “Say no to love under the tree”. This was chosen as couples stopping under trees or behind bushes in town and just outside town are often victims of car hijackings and robberies. The campaign also formed part of the planned Women’s Month activities. The group will visit the Boerboomkraal school on 21 August 2015. Donations will also be made.
Women’s Month will be concluded with and event at which four women who assisted the Burgersfort SAPS in fighting crime will be recognised for their efforts. This event will take place at Highlands College. The public can also start looking out for sign boards that will alert them to high risk zones for crimes such as hijackings and robberies. If you see them, steer clear of parking and relaxing there. Always be alert and don’t give criminals an opportunity to target you. (Information & photographs: Const. Captivating Chev Captiva We were not family, but for travelling purposes we were when four grown men with baggage for three days travelled from Lydenburg to Nelspruit earlier this year in a Chevrolet Captiva to catch a flight to a General Motors South Africa sponsored event in Port Elizabeth. With the last row of seats of the seven seater down for baggage requirements, the editor of Platinum Gazette and colleague André Coetzee of the Highlands Panorama News were completely comfortable on the back seat. The vehicle proved to be perfect for our ‘family’ outing as it slid effortless down Longtom Pass. Just before we arrived at the airport emergency measures was called for when a vehicle unexpectedly moved across the road. The car came to a halt in a blink of the eye. This trip flashed through the editor’s memory as he took a 2.2 diesel turbo Chevrolet Captiva (four cylinder) from Westvaal Steelpoort to Maseven next to De Hoop dam for a few photographs. Same car, different powertrain. Same space, superb comfort especially with the optional 18-inch wheels, black leather and sunroof. Strip those nice things away and you can have this front wheel drive family vehicle for R398 000. Three-year service plan (60 000 km), five-year warranty (120 000 km) and roadside assistance included. The car has enough grunt with the six-speed automatic gearbox in ‘normal’ mode to gun past slower traffic on a busy road. ‘Eco’ mode (which is no doubt much more economical) is not much fun (to be honest, it is more of a pain). The comfort of the vehicle does not end on the black top, but extends to the dirt where the vehicle’s ground clearance is a large positive. The car has all the gizmotronics and safety features you expect (no satnav though) and the black interior is sufficiently grand without too much chrome to make it very pleasing on the eye in harsh sunlight. And the dual zone air conditioner works like a charm. You can certainly hear it is a diesel if you stand next to the car, but inside with the windows closed, you will not notice the sound. If you are in the market for a family vehicle with more than enough space, give the Captiva some think. Phone Westvaal Steelpoort at 013 230 9519 if you are interested.
