Gazette Platinum’s filthy side!

The Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality prides itself on marketing the area as the world’s “First democratic Platinum City”. This shiny image the town fathers want to betray is a little bit in tatters as they made a mess of waste management as the accompanying photographs and letter clearly illustrates. The marketing spin is but a thin disguise for a stinking mess under the surface. The Burgersfort landfill site has reached its capacity and no local alternative has been planned or

provisioned for. Residents and businesses making use of the local landfill are now being directed to the Malogeng Landfill site near Apél. A letter in this regard was sent out by the municipality in May. This still falls within the municipal border, but is approximately 81km from Burgersfort. Visiting a well-known dumping site at the Alverton turn-off this week, Platinum Gazette was told by locals collecting recyclables that people are being turned away at the landfill

“even if they have only one or two plastics to dump”. This result in illegal dumping being on the increase as the alternative provided by the municipality is not cost effective or viable for many. The dumping site near Alverton is such a popular dumping ground that the vehicle used by the local recycle entrepreneurs is filled to capacity with sorted glass and plastic within four hours. “We’ll be back again tomorrow” they told the newspaper. A Steelpoort businessman also com-

plained. “How do they expect us to travel that far? How could they not make provision for another local alternative?” The Burgersfort site will now be decommissioned and rehabilitated. Perhaps residents can look forward to a clean look on Mandela Day (18 July) again - a day on which local authorities, businesses and organisations famously take to the streets to clean-up dumping sites and collect rubbish.

NEWS

Residents see red about rough Youth Day celebrations This week social media was abuzz about the rough Youth Day function held at the Mooifontein Recreational Park in Burgersfort. Platinum Gazette was also contacted about the function that left residents ‘without words’ to describe their disappointment about what happened. The park was constructed in Mooifontein despite strong opposition from local residents. Mooifontein is one of the oldest suburbs in Burgersfort. Residents feared their peace would be disturbed and that their tranquil suburb would be turned upside down during events. Last weekend their fears became reality. A function on Saturday, 16 June 2018 saw large numbers of people flock to the park. Public drinking was allegedly the order of the day and the empty bottles were left on the sidewalks. According to a report on Facebook, drivers took to spinning their vehicles in the suburb’s streets and some where suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol. Despite the Tubatse Fetakgomo Municipality administrating the facility, no traffic officials were at the park to monitor or prevent such reckless driving and ensure there is no drinking and driving. There was no police presence either. Residents also complained about the public indecency as visitors to the park urinated in the streets and along the fences and walls of houses - this despite ablution facilities within the park. Parking was a problem and visitors simply parked in front of the nearby houses and driveways. As darkness fell, a group from the park moved to a nearby filling station where they were caught on camera wielding long knives used in a confrontation with fellow partygoers. “It is worrying that residents were not informed about the event beforehand and the organisors and authorities allowing the event, did not take preventative measures to avoid a situation as the one of Saturday” a comment on Facebook stated.

Photographs and a video from Facebook showed the aftermath of the Youth Day event at Mooifontein Recreational Park. Note the long knife in the middle of the photograph above, seconds before it is being used to stab someone.

Rubbish, empty beer bottles, broken bottles and the smell of urine lined the streets of Mooifontein near the Recreational Park. Drivers also left their marks on the tar after spinning their vehicles during the celebrations.

1 John 4:20 (King James Version) 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

Speaking of road safety, law and order, and safe driving, this photograph was taken this week at the R555 robot at the junction with the R37 in Burgersfort. It is presumably in order for vehicles to jump the queue on the R555 by driving on the lefthand shoulder of the road, obstructing the slipway going to Bothashoek, and then to bully themselves into the line at the traffic light. The traffic officer will just look at you, as can be seen in the photograph. Well done everyone.

DCM hands over home based care facility Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) officially handed over a state of the art home based care facility in Ngwaabe. The handover took place on Friday, 15 June and was a ended by a variety of stakeholders from the community, tradi onal leadership, caregivers and the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality. Before construc on of the Home Based Care facility the caregivers were working from the clinic. The Ngwaabe area is one with many vulnerable members of society, including a large group of orphans. The home based caregivers provide at home care and love to those who are ill, old and orphaned. Their work is very important as many of these people are in need of care but unable to travel far or don’t have the finances to seek other assistance. Having their own building from which to operate and where individuals can seek help is a major improvement in the social infrastructure of the area. The project saw DCM construct the building with enough room for offices and a boardroom, a dedicated tradi onal healer building, as well as ablu on facili es. DCM ensured that the Ngwaabe Home Based Care will not have trouble with collec ng water and not only drilled but also equipped a borehole on the premises. The offices were fi ed with furniture and even air condi oning. Securing the facility was another priority. The property was fenced off with pallisade fencing with access through dedicated gates that can be

locked overnight. Very sturdy security gates were also installed at the entrances to the building and burglar bars fi ed before the windows. The building was also designed to be accessible to those who are wheelchair bound. This meant not only crea ng ramps where steps were installed, but also making passages wide enough for wheelchair bound visitors to move around easily. Representa ves from DCM handed over more than just the building and its equipment. They also delivered 5 wheelchairs, care bags to the caregivers and other gi s to those forming part of the Ngwaabe Home Based Care. Representa ves from the Ngwaabe Home Based Care thanked DCM for their care, ini a ve and for walking the road with them in caring for the community. Mr Pius Monyela from DCM told the audience at the handover that “we know there is always need of more assistance, but li le by li le as we are able to assist, we can change the world”. He added that these projects and dona ons are very important to DCM. “Working together to improve social development and infrastructure in the community is key to a be er future for everyone and to see the difference these projects make very rewarding”. A er the ribbon cu ng to officially open the facility, and a tour through the building, the Ngwaabe Home Based Care responded with gra tude towards DCM and commi ed to look a er the facility while making a difference within the lives of the most vulnerable ones in the area. The day concluded with a celebratory meal and jubila ons at what had just been handed over.
