Law enforcement authorities in and around Burgersfort went big this week Wednesday when a large scale crima combatting operation was held. A number of residents at first thought that something was seriously wrong, judged by the omni presence of law enforcement personnel, vehicles and even mounted Police on horses and motorcycles. Soon it was evident that if you are law abidin, nothing was to be feared and everyone could go on with their daily business as usual. Station Commander of Burgersfort Police Station, Colonel Ronnie Van Niekerk, told the newspaper the operation was held under the command of the Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Operations in Limpopo, Major General Benny Ntlemeza. The operation was a multi-phased operation where units of the South African Police Service joined hands with the Provincialand Municipal Traffic departments and the Immigration office of the Department of Home Affairs to execute roadblocks and stop- and search actions.

Kidnapped boy found in Burgersfort A 10-year old boy was safely returned to his parents on Wednesday after he was kidnapped near Jane Furse on Tuesday. The boy went missing around 16:00 on Tuesday. His worried parents received a sms a few hours later demanding R10 000 in ransom money be paid into a specific account. The boy’s parents alerted the police who arranged that the money be paid into the account. On Wednesday the police took a 22-year old

The boy was found unharmed near the ATM. “The boy was kidnapped after he assisted someone who was asking for directions”, said Colonel Ronel Otto, a provincial SAPS spokesperson. Should parents be allowed to spank Draft legislation in South Africa will make it illegal for parents to spank their children if it gets approved. “If a husband beats a wife, it is a crime, but if a parent hits a child who is helpless, it’s not illegal,” Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini told the press. Parents using a flat hand on a child’s bottom or enact any other form of corporal punishment at home will be charged with assault. The results of the 2012 National School Violence Study was released this week. It shows KwaZulu-Natal as the province with the highest rate of corporal bunishment in schools. It states that caning, slapping, punching and other means of physical abuse increased from 48.7% in 2008 to 73.7% last year. A statement issued by the SA Human Rights Commission suggests that reported cases “often went beyond the definition of corporal punishment, with some children left severely humiliated, grievously injured, disabled or even dead as a result of injuries”. We asked readers what they think about the draft law and how it will influence the way parents discipline their children.
Mr Morgan Mafologela said: “Children now say they have their own rights. Parents must be able to beat them as punishment. Now children keep themselves busy with bad things. If they allow corporal punishment children will know they will get beaten and won’t do bad things”.
Mr Nicho Tebele and Ms Brenda Mokoena said: “At home you must be able to beat them a little bit. Not too much. Show them you are the parent. Just whip them a little bit”.
Mr Mojalefa Ntsoana said: “I think it is a good thing to keep corporal punishment. Kids must know their rights, but now if you even talk harshly, they want to call the police. They must not take away the parents’ right to use corporal punishment. There is a difference between assault and just a good spanking”.
Mr Juda Mohubedu and Mr Moses Komane said: “When a child is naughty sit down and explain to them why certain things are wrong. It is not good to beat them”.
Mr Frans Malapane said: “Children should be disciplined. According to our culture children must listen and if they don’t listen we use the sjambok. That is the only way. If you don’t discipline them the new generation will be a nation with problems. I don’t support that new law”.
Mr Aubrey Mmola said: “We must beat them to teach them a lesson, otherwise they do whatever they want. We must teach them to respect each other. Now they will no longer listen”.

a child as a form of punishment?
Ms Annikie Marule, Mr Mtaburuka Mhlongo and Mr Lucky Mpumi Mathebula said: “You must not beat a child. When you beat him or her you will make them do more of the things they were doing wrong. Discipline them by mouth. By beating children you will cause them to lose their minds. Also pray for them”.
Ms Promise Selepe and Mr Petunia Selepe said: “It is a good thing to punish a child. Parents must just find other ways to punish their children - not by beating them. Talk to the child nicely. If you shout at children they don’t listen”.
Mr Dumisa Madalane and Mr Mahlatse Ntoana (left and middle) said: “When you look at the rights of children, it says that they need to stay in a safe place. It binds everywhere, not only at school. This law will be good. We support it 100%”. Mr Collin Dlamini said: “Our kids are no longer controlable because you can’t do anything then they talk harassment. Sometimes children misuse their rights”.
Mnr.
Mr Marumo Mabokwane said: “It will encourage children to disrespect their parents. Spanking them does not mean killing them. Later when the children are out of order government will not be able to control them. The government should not interfere with the way people raise their own children because what they are doing with the aim of protecting the children ends up spoiling the same children. E.g. the abolition of corporal punishment in schools. Most of the learners are out of control because of this”.
Mr Lovemore Hatlane said: “Change means growth. It will be good to have this law. The children will have less injuries and will be able to grow nicely. They will be living in a healthy and safe environment. Punishment is not healthy. Children are like plants. If you take care of them they grow. People seek understanding. Use talking as a method to instill discipline”.
Mr Ben Langa said: “Parents must be allowed to spank their children, but there must be limits. If you do it with love, there is no problem, but some people beat them beyond the limit of love. In the end children will understand why they were disciplined that way. Now we will have more criminals and rapists. When we beat them, we prepare them for adulthood”.
Mnr. Johann Lategan sê: “Dis onregverdig. Hoekom kon my pa my pakgee? Daar is niks fout met my nie. Daar is ‘n verskil tussen ‘n pakslae en aanranding. Kinders sal heeltemal hand uit ruk. Kyk hoe gaan hulle reeds tekere in die skole waar hulle detensie moet sit. Daar is nou soveel dwelms en anders misdaadsake in skole”. By hom is Elouise.
Mr Karim Dadie said: “A child needs discipline by spanking them with the palm of the hand. You cannot take that away from the parent. Children will grow up to be disciplined adults if they are properly disciplined when they are young”.
Right: Mr Sipho Hlakudi said: “Corporal punishment must not be allowed because beating the flesh doesn’t change the real person inside. It only makes them worse. As parents we should lead by example”.
Links: Mnr. Rudi van der Merwe sê: “As jy kyk na die jeug se gedragskode van vandag sal dit hulle net aanhits om geen dissipline te hê nie. ‘n Goeie pakslae op sy tyd is kosbaar”.
