De Hoop Dam (currently still waiting to be renamed) is fast moving to the 100 percent full mark, the first time since construction of the wall has been completed last year. The adjacent graphic is a screenshot of the Department of Water and Sanitation’s website that indicates the water level on 19 January 2015. The photograph was taken on Sunday, 18 January. Meanwhile construction of the reticulation network is still underway. Throughout the past festive season residents of villages near the dam in the vicinity of Steel Bridge has in the mean-time taken up angling as a new sport, although formal recreation facilities have not yet been established.

Home(s) with a view Residents of Buffelshoek had to relocate due to construction of the De Hoop Dam. Lengthy negotiations originally stalled some of the construction work of the dam. This coupled with striking workers delayed the original completion date. The new homes are nearing completion and will provide them with an excellent view of the dam. They are just some of the hopeful residents close to the dam hoping to benefit from tourism and other spin-offs from the dam. The houses can be seen from the R555 when travelling to Roossenekal.

Hawkers growing impatient Hawkers in Greater Tubatse are eager for their new hawker stalls to be completed. Construction is underway in Burgersfort and Praktiseer. On 10 June 2014 the Red Ants removed all the hawkers’ illegal structures to make way for construction of new stalls. The construction of the stalls were expected to be completed within 3 to 6 months. It is however progressing much slower. “They told us that May 2015 is the new date they will finish,” one hawker told the newspaper this week. “We hope so, but we’ll have to wait and see”.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity”. Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV) The photograph above was taken from a viewpoint overlooking Burgersfort. It was taken last week as thunder clouds started gathering after a sweltering few days. The hawker stalls under construction in Praktiseer.

Progress and decay Good news first. Dirk Winterbach Street is getting a make-over with new sidewalks currently being constructed near the taxi rank and opposite Burgersfort Mall.

The bad news? Despite millions being spend on fixing potholes and painting new road markings in Burgersfort, some roads are looking like this. Residents complain that regular passenger vehicles can barely negotiate these obstacles. Roads like the cross at Eland Street and Dirk Winterbach Street was fixed in December but are already littered with potholes again. This significantly impacts on the traffic flow through town - not to mention the traffic lights that are still out of order.

Hey, you need to stop! Construction on the R555 through Steelpoort is well underway. This has also resulted in an alternative route next to the original road that is currently being reconstructed. The alternative route is now

sporting some new signage - a stop street. At the turn-off towards Winterveld and Riba Cross there is now a four way stop. Motorists are asked to be aware of this and obey the new rules for everyone’s safety.

Eve did After numerous enquiries during the past week, Platinum Gazette must state that the newspaper’s Beánnla Celliers did drive the Opel Adam last week as stated in the published advertorial (photograph not posed). Praises have a limit, so the editor cut her contribution to the article very short. After driving from Glencore/Merafe’s Lion smelters, she declared that it was a fantastic little car, with very sharp and precise steering (not to talk of the brakes) after dodging the potholes between the Eerstegeluk/Lannex cross and the Samancor Chrome Tubatse smelter. She said “I prefer the company’s small Japanese 4 x 4 in this area as a daily commute because of the sometimes challenging terrain and the places I must go for my work. But in a city, the Adam will be a strong contender (in blue).” Contact Westvaal Steelpoort if you are interested. Tel: 013 230 9230. (The editor took the photograph while she was driving. He really felt safe, it is an excellent car and she is a first class driver)

NEWS

Does it really matter what This year the ANC celebrated their 103rd birthday with a big bash in Cape Town. ANC supporters painted Cape Town stadium yellow, black and green in celebration. Journalists and important people form media houses were also there to witness the happenings. Karima Brown, Group Executive Editor of Independent Newspaper Group even posted a picture posing with veteran journalist and Group Editor of Opinion and Analysis, Vukani Mde all dressed up in ANC regalia on social media. The two were not at the event to report on the proceedings. This sparked wide controversy both in the media industry and outside. Last year the Independent Newspaper Group fired Donwald Pressly for seeking political office with the Democratic Alliance. He was a journalist working for Business Report. The group sited “a breach of Independent Newspapers’ editorial code of conduct and code of ethics and a breach of trust that those readers place in our titles and the writers who put them together” as the reason. Although many noted that there is a big difference between seeking political office and wearing political attire, many feel that journalists should try to remain on neutral ground to keep the credibility of their publications above board. “Journalists are human and by nature gravitate towards specific ideologies and ways of thinking shaped by a myriad of influences and factors. We are not blank slates. Ultimately, however, our job is to monitor and to hold power to account – whatever its colours,” Marianne Thamm, an opinion writer for the Daily Maverick said. The Independent Newspaper Group owned by Iqbal Survé’s Sekunjalo Consortium has been viewed by many as particularly vocal in its support for the ANC. The question was raised whether the management of Independent Newspapers would be fine with a journalist attending an EFF event or DA gathering in those parties’ regalia? Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about this.

Mnr. Ryno en Me. Christa de Jager sê: “Hulle het vir hulself ‘n gat gegrawe. Nou gaan ‘n mens twee keer dink om te glo wat hulle skryf. Hulle moet onpartydig bly”.

Mr Walter Nzimande said: “They must express where they stand politically. Then we will know how to view it when they write about that party”.

Mr Joel Ngwane, Mr Sylvester Mahlake, Mr Sipho Molobela and Mr Norman Mnisi said: “It is their freedom of choice what to wear, but we won’t trust what they write”. Links: Me Joyce Komane en Me Thandi Moriri sê: “Nee, nee! Hulle moenie wys watter party hulle ondersteun nie. Dan sal ons nie glo wat hulle skryf nie. Mense in die media moet altyd gewoon aantrek”. Left: Mr Arabia Mohlala and Mr Enos Makwana said: “They will be fair no matter what they are wearing. Journalists are professional people and they should be allowed to wear political party T-shirts if they want to”.

Mr Killian Sibanda said: “They must stop wearing political clothes. The reason is their own safety. People can be offended if they see you belong to a specific party while you should be neutral”. With him is Tshepo.

Left: Mr Sipho Makola and Mr Jacob Mohlala said: “The media should be close to the ANC because we need to know what is happening on the inside. Journalists and the media should be neutral. Don’t wear political attire anywhere or we won’t trust you”.

Mr Richard Agim said: “Journalists are human. They as South Africans have rights. They have political affiliations. It is hypocrisy to think that they should not wear political Tshirts. There is nobody who doesn’t belong to a political party. Journalists write the truth and they can only do that if they are honest about what party they belong to. It does influence the way they write, but when we know their political affiliation and they declare it we know how biased it will be”.

Ms Lucy Nkosi, Ms Anna Serage and Ms Anna Mashego said: “Journalists should always wear the clothes of the party whose event they are attending. The party whose function it is must give the journalists their T-shirts to wear”.

a journalist is wearing?

Mr Trinity Magabe and Ms Damaris Magabe said: “It is totally wrong. Not acceptable at all. Maybe they are being bribed? They are then journalists and media that is one with the ANC. This means that even if the ANC is doing wrong, they will not fully expose or criticise it”. With them is Success. Mr Speed Kgwetiane said: “They must not wear political Tshirts, even if they belong to the party. People will think they take sides when reporting. It is like soccer referees. The referee likes soccer, but cannot take sides – he must be fair not matter what team he secretly supports. People will not trust what you write and say you are not fair if you wear political attire. It will be negative for the newspaper because people not belonging to the party will lose interest in it”.

Ms Lettie Lesele said: “Journalists should wear neutral clothes when they are at work and in the public eye. At home they can wear what they want”.

Mr Johannes Phiri said: “During working hours media houses should give their people uniforms to wear. After work they can wear political clothing”.

Mr Tsietsi Lehloo said: “They should be able to wear anything. They were celebrating the ANC’s birthday. Straight and forward”. Ms Kully Ntsong and Ms Lindiwe Shai said: “They should be neutral. They should wear normal clothes. They will not be fair if they are absorbed by wearing political clothes”. Mr Jerry Mnisi and Mr Frederick Lesinya said: “They should not be allowed to wear political clothing. They should be identifiable as media people. We won’t trust them if they are in political attire”.

Mr Goodman Goloda said: “It’s worrying because the media must be neutral. They must control themselves and not be over excited at such events. They have a responsibility to society and the people must be able to believe what their publications write”.

Mr Dumisa Madalane said: “I’m not sure what exactly transpired in Cape Town. South Africa is a democratic country and anyone can do what they want without prejudice. Journalists have the same full rights like everyone. When they are on duty they should be neutral, but when away from work they can wear what they want. Helen Zille was a journalist before she became a politician. She displayed her interests outside her job. She was a political party member, but did not publicise it”.

Mr Jeremiah Maalakano said: “They should be neutral. If they give information they will be influenced by the party whose clothes they wear. They will favour those parties”.

Right: Ms Jane Mokoena, Ms Lebogang Mothomi, Mr Mahlake Ngoatle and Ms Mammitjie Maphakge said: “No, it’s not ok for people from the media to wear political clothes. Journalists should never favour political parties. They must be impartial and remember that information and politics are not only about the ANC”.

Mr Lucky Mzimba said: “Journalists must wear clothes that show who they are working for. It shows they are professional. They should not ever wear political T-shirts”.

Mr Vincent Sekgobela said: “They must be neutral. They work with all the different political parties. They should not show their interest in specific political parties. If they wear political attire the people will know the media house or journalists are not from their party and see what they write that way”.

Mareseleng FC impressed in the first half, creating many opportunities but failing to put the ball in the back of the net. In this regard Masters’ goalkeeper Sipho Makabate was at his best and half time arrived without anyone having scored a goal. In the second half both teams put in renewed effort. In the 65th minute Ally Maimela finally scored for the Masters. This clinched the win for Masters.

Local soccer teams clash head-on in final A community soccer tournament came to an end in a thrilling final at Dithabaneng Village sportsground near Twickenham Mine on Sunday 18 January 2015. The tournament started with 32 teams on 23 December 2014 and in the end it was Maruping Swallows and Brazil FC who faced off in the final. Both teams are from Mashabela Village.
