Legal or not?

The installation of speed humps are often done illegally by community members. The humps are usually not done as prescribed by the law and damage cars and endanger lives. The tendency to simply put up speed humps has now also reached Burgersfort town. This presumably illegal installation of speed humps and road closure was photographed in Ribbok Street. A response with regards to these and some other issues had been requested from the Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality’s Communication Unit, but to date none had been received, despite a promise to respond. An update will be published as soon as the promised response on these and other issues are received.

Do you support #SocialMediaBlackout? A new campaign to protest against the high prices charged by cell phone networks for data kicked-off on Wednesday this week. The campaign led by activist Ntsiki Mazwai, called on South Africans to join the #SocialMediaBlackout “Our data prices are very high compared to other countries and this is unfair, especially to ordinary, struggling South Africans,” Mzwai said. “We want to show corporates our economic power and get them to lower their high data prices permanently”. The campaign is calling on users to “shutdown” and not buy any data or make use of any social media for 3 consecutive Wednesdays. The first Wednesday of #SocialMediaBlackout did not have any particular impact with Twitter being abuzz despite the “shutdown”. #SocialMediaBlackout was one of the top trending topics on Twitter with users and even networks joking about the issue. The call for the #SocialMediaBlackout is still on for the next two Wednesdays and if this fails to have any impact Mazwai and her team are set to take things further to try and get cheaper data prices. Platinum Gazette asked readers if they feel that data prices are too high and if they will be participating in the #SocialMediaBlackout.

Mr Wonder Kgwedi said: “They punish us because we use social media. I will be participating in the “SocialMediaBlackout. I usually use my data to search for information on things on Google”.

Mnr. Sam Mphogo sê: “Ons moet hierdie wegbly Woensdae ondersteun. Data kos te veel. Ek gebruik data meestal vir Whatsapp. Die netwerke sal luister as niemand op ‘n Woensdag data koop nie”. Left: Mr Vincent Sekgobela and Mr Mischack Sekgogoba said: “It is true, they are charging us too much. We support the campaign. Maybe this will make them change. We will do a total blackout on Wednesday. We usually use social media for Facebook and Whatsapp”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “Yes, we pay too much and it is time they do something about it. Especially Vodacom charge too much. I support the campaign to not buy data or use social media on a Wednesday. I usually use my data to search on Google to check what is happening in America and Zimbabwe”.

Mr Tshepo Mabelane said: “We pay too much. We like social media too much. They are killing us with their prices. I will not buy data on a Wednesday, but I cannot stay away from social media. My favourites are Facebook and Whatsapp”.

Mr Clement Phasha said: “No, I don’t think we pay too much. The cost is not so much. I only use data for Whatsapp and I’ll continue as normal”. Ms Sylvia Popela said: “I don’t use social media or data. I only sms and make calls on my phone. It will be good if those using data can pay less”. With her is Naledi.

Ms. Nomusa Mzimba said: “Yes, they charge too much for data. I’ll join in and not buy data on a Wednesday. Data must fall. I am not a fan of social media, but I do use Whatsapp and Facebook”.

Ms. Sharon Masuku said: “Yes, we are paying too much. I will not buy data on a Wednesday to support the campaign, but I’ll still use my social media platforms. I mostly use Whatsapp”. Left: Mr Steyn Moraba and Ms Lindiwe Moloto said: “We support not buying data on a Wednesday and we will keep away from social media for the next two Wednesdays”.
