DWARSRIVIER MINE
Job creation through enterprise development On Wednesday last week Dwarsrivier Mine officially opened two initiatives that are part of their plan for job creation through enterprise development. A car wash at the mine is one of the initiatives. Proposals from entrepreneurs in the local communities surrounding Dwarsrivier Mine were requested and eventually one of these proposals were accepted and developed into an onsite business. The local entrepreneur, Mr Thabo Mmakanyane (Lamtin Projects) was assisted by Dwarsrivier Mine to register his business and is receiving continuous help in stabilizing his business. The car wash will provide work to approximately 6 people and they will be providing a washing service for the Mine’s vehicles. Employees will also be able to have their cars washed on site. The facility constructed at the Mine is equipped with the best in carwash technology and will give the local entrepreneurs running it, the opportunity to build their business in a favourable environment. The Mine’s management were the first to have their vehicles cleaned by the team. Mr. Francois Uys, General Manager of Dwarsrivier Mine cut a ribbon to officially open the car wash (photograph top right). From the car wash the group moved to the brand new canteen. Dwarsrivier MIne has the health of their employees at heart and wanted to not only provide a business opportunity for a local entrepreneur, but also ensure that their employees are provided with food of a high standard. Ms Glory Maimela and her partners from Kalkfontein Village close to the mine will be running the canteen. They will provide a variety of snacks, sweets and cold drinks. Orders for cooked meals can also be placed in advance. Employees are able to order these from a menu provided the day before. Another ribbon cutting ceremony amidst the smell of delicious food took place before Mr. Francois Uys was the first to buy his meal from the canteen (photograph right).

Dwarsrivier Mine focuses on Mine related skills development. The cadet training scheme creates a pool of people from which Dwarsrivier and other mines can draw skilled employees. This scheme seeks to enhance the employability of people in the area. 13 SMME received business skills training through LIBSA. Three have been awarded various contracts at the Mine and others have been assisted by the Mine to register a cooperative which will do underground road construction among key Mine opportunities. Dwarsrivier Mine believes that unemployment is a national problem and management has set specific targets that will be achieved over time to create a local impact in terms of employment in the area. The table left below shows the distribution and progress of local, provincial, national and people from other areas that are employed at the Mine. The current employment distribution was inherited and is adjusted according to the targets set by management as people leave the Company’s employ and new employees are appointed.
Infrastructure Development: In order for the Mine to deliver on its mandate, a proper consultation with various stakeholders and studies done showed that the primary issues that communities are concerned with are the following: Access to portable water, Access roads, Electrification and Human Resource Development.

“Platinum Gazette, you must go back now, please, the Police are going to shoot”. Platinum Gazette’s reporter/ delivery boy was on his way back from Modikwa mine last week Friday when the warning came and he found himself trapped behind striking and marching Modikwa employees on the mine access road towards the R37 to Polokwane. About a minute after the warning the Police vehicles started charging towards strikers, shooting at them with rubber bullets from within the vehicles. After taking a couple of photographs of marchers blocking the road with stones and other objects, the reporter retreated, going to Dilokong mine and smelter via a back road, the route explained by one of the marchers. Returning from Dilokong the R37 was blocked and a hugetraffic jam ensued, with Police driving up and down, broadcasting from their vehicle that motorists should turn back. Platinum Gazette had to be delivered to Ohrigstad via the Moroke Segorong/Penge back road … Talks between the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and mine management to end the strike resumed on Monday and Tuesday. As far as could be determined, progress was negligible. Yesterday morning, just before going to press, striking workers were gathered at the Montrose Village turn-off on the access road from the R37, preventing non-striking employees to go to the mine. “The situation is much like last week Friday” one employee at the
scene told the newspaper by cell phone. The Modikwa strike centres mainly around disputes over pay increases and other issues such as employee housing. Meanwhile the ongoing strike has forced the government to suspend the handing over of title deeds on the mining land. “The event has been suspended. We will be announcing a new date as soon as we get a go-ahead,” said Limpopo rural development and land reform department spokesman Motlatsi Lebea. The handover was scheduled to take place on Wednesday (Human Rights day) as part of the government's efforts to restore dignity to people whose land was taken away from them decades ago, he said. Lebea said the department was impressed by a deal entered into between community and the mine, which would enable the community to benefit from mining. The mine was expected to pay rental to the community and to use beneficiaries' businesses, incorporating them into mining trades. Lebea said the mine would make a cash payment to the community the value of the land on which the mine now operated. In total, 19 people lodged separate claims to the Land Claims Commission in 1998, after the government introduced the land redistribution programme. The beneficiaries were dispossessed of their land in 1979.

De Hoop Dam access road closed The Department of Water Affairs says the access road through the De Hoop Dam construction had to be closed immediately. According to the department, there is a risk of loss of life for the public, especially the Buffelskloof community, due to flooding , open excavations and heavy duty machinery if the access road remains open. The department says it must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act to avoid any death or injury at the construction site. According to the department alternatives were explored, but the safety of the community, including children using the access road, remains priority, resulting in too high risk if the roaad is kept open.
Theft out of vehicles a problem From 02 March to 15 March this year, seven cases of theft out of motor vehicles were reported in the Burgersfort Police Station’s area. According to the Police vehicles’ door locks wer damaged during the thefts, while cases of jamming central locking systems with remotes also occurred. The Police request the community not to leave their vehicles unattended for too long in parking areas. According to Liuetenant Godfrey Mohale, they should also not leave valuables such as laptop computers, cell phones and jewellery on the seats or other places in their vehicles where its is visible to potential thieves.

Finishing touches and tarring of sections of the road was still in progress when Platinum Gazette crossed the river via the new bridge a few days before going to press. The cost of the road and single lane bridge was R45 million rand. Right: the road where it ends at Mankele.

Human Rights celebrations at Maepa Primary School Human Rights Day was celebrated at Maepa Primary School on Tuesday this week. The programme included talks by the school principal, Mr S Mkhabela, Reverend Nkuna, various people from the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) and an address by Ms A Modan (social worker). The day was sponsored by Tubatse SUPERSPAR in Burgersfort. The Ohrigstad station commissioner also attended the event. The main message from CPF chairperson, Pastor Marna Smit’s address was that the ability to choose makes us human. The opportunity to execute that ability is an individual right. Human Rights vests in choice. “Today choose compassion, choose equilibrium, choose against crime, opportunity – therein is hope, is future” she said. The day ended with a soccer game which Maepa won. Girls from Maepa also performed traditional dances in colourful costumes.

Tuinbouklub leer meer oor kruie en koolstof-voetspore
(Foto’s en artikel: Santie Carelse)
Op Dinsdag 20 Maart het die vroue van die plaaslike Tuinbouklub bymekaar gekom by Rootworks Herbs and Daylilies Kwekery. Die vroue kom van Burgersfort, Dullstroom, Lydenburg en Ohrigstad. Me.

NEWS
Love them or hate them, you This week Human Rights Day was the first in a whole group of public holidays over the coming month. We asked readers their opinion about public holidays in South Africa. Do people remember the reason for the celebration or commemoration? Do they want to add or take away any holidays? How do the public holidays affect the economy?
Mnr.
Mr Peter Lubisi said: “I think public holidays are important. Many of our comrades have died, so it is important that we remember certain public holidays. I also think we have enough public holidays. It would be nice to always have them on a Monday or a Friday. It is boring to have them on a Wednesday, like with Human Rights Day this week, and then having to go to work the next day”.
Mr Jack Mahlatji said: “My personal opinion: we’ve got too many holidays. We need to shift them around and put them in a way that will benefit our economy. But I cannot say how government should run it, I just think it should be in such a way so that business can still be productive”.
Mr Tshepo Mokoeka said: “My research have found that in relation to labouring countries in Africa, South Africa is on average with the amount of public holidays. Because of our history we need to have these holidays, but people still don’t know why we have them. Many people use the day for other things than thinking about what happened in the past. There is another problem. Like Human Rights Day - only blacks celebrate it. Whites don’t take part. Government must do more to create an atmosphere of ‘oneness’ between the races. This will not be easy”.
Mr Wandile Mngomezulu said: “People just have a holiday on public holidays. We have enough public holidays, but it would be good if they moved it to be on a Friday instead of in the week, then you can get time with the family”.
Mr Serero Mpondo said: “We have enough public holidays. People don’t understand what is happening - why we have them”.
Ms Ntokozo Motsileng said: “People just have a holiday on public holidays. We have enough public holidays - especially from a business point of view. It would be nice if they moved the public holidays to the closest Monday or Friday then we’ll always have long weekends when there are public holidays”.
Mr Martin Hlatshwayo and MR Willie Mohlala said: “There are too many public holidays, especially in April. Adding them to a weekend, like a Monday or a Friday would be good. They should not be in the week. People do think and remember where the public holidays came from”.
Mnr.
Mr James Nguni said: “There is no public holidays where I work. You don’t get what you should. I have a union, but it does not work for me. I want more public holidays. People must rest. I want Madiba’s holiday to be added. He is the big chief. People don’t celebrate public holidays for the reason they were created. It is just a holiday”.
Ms Mpho Ntuli said: “There are enough public holidays. People do think about where they come from, but you get people who are just partying and relaxing. I want the public holidays to always be on a Sunday please. Then with our laws we’ll always have Monday’s off as well - an extra holiday!” With her is Mbali.

may celebrate them: holidays
Ms Melba Maroga said: “I think the public holidays are not good in the middle of the week, they must make it on a Friday. Madiba’s birthday should be a holiday. He is the one who gave us our freedom and we should celebrate it. Public holidays are bad for the economy, but workers who produce also need to rest”.
Ms Nancy Sekiti said: “Some people celebrate public holidays the way they should, but some don’t. It is something you should remember. They should add Madiba’s birthday as a holiday. They also need to put public holidays on Fridays that is the best option for everyone”.
Me. Links: Me. By haar is Adel.
Mnr.
Mr Sakkie Malatji said: “Public holidays are sharp for us. You get time to rest because the job you do at work sometimes overload you. Public holidays are there to rest. It must always be in the middle of the week. Over weekends people drink beer - not in die week. Government can take holidays to always be in the week. They must create a Nelson Mandela day. He brought joy to our lives”.
Mnr.
Mr Godfrey Malapane said: “The public holiday is good for us. If you work on shift you get double pay. They must put public holidays in the middle of the week because if they are making long weekends people will come to work lazy and tired”. Mr Adnaan Abrahams said: “The only problem I have is like Christmas that is a public holiday. It is a religious holiday for Christians and government recognise it. They should also recognise public holidays for other religions. At the moment you must take leave or sick leave if you have a religious holiday”. With him is Ammaarah.
Mr Delphas Malatji, Mr Edwin Matemane and Mr Titus Ntambula said: “We have enough public holidays otherwise we’ll be bankrupt. No work, no pay. Public holidays are celebrated okay. They should just keep everything the way it is”. Left: Mr Patrick Sekgobela, Mr Thabo Molapo and Mr Tom Mnisi said: “There are too little public holidays in SA. There has to be a Mandela Day. Before he dies we must honour him he is such a special guy. Holidays should be on Mondays or Fridays. During the week people drink and when they have to work the next day they’ll be chased away. The celebrations should also be where Left: Mr Smiley Moshabi said: “The economy is bad and we have things for that day happened in too many public holidays. This have to stop. Some guys get too much money - money for a whole month, even when they are not history e.g. Sharpville, not working on public holidays. Getting paid for holidays is nice. All Cape Town”. we get is to drink beer.

DWARSRIVIER MINE WRAPPER
DWARSRIVIER MINE Caring for Communities and the environment National Water Week was celebrated from 5 – 11 March 2012. A major event took place at De Hoop Dam. Dwarsrivier Mine, committed to the development and health of local communities, was part of this event as a sponsor. The 2012 National Water Week had the theme “Water is Life – Conserve it, Respect it, Enjoy it”. Approximately 300 children were taken on a tour of the soon to be complete De Hoop Dam and after the morning’s activities, which included a tour of the dam construction site and a tree planting ceremony, everyone moved to the main event next to Steel bridge. Dwarsrivier Mine in the fight against climate change has initiated a campaign called ‘Adopt a Tree’. They donated Marula trees to schools in the area as well as to the De Hoop Dam visitors centre. Two trees were planted at the visitors centre by the Sekhukhune District Mayor, Cllr. Magabe, Greater T u b a t s e
Municipality (GTM) Mayor, Cllr. Mahlake, government officials and Mr Remember Mmbengwa of Dwarsrivier Mine. The idea is to teach children about a carbon footprint, but also to encourage them to take care of the tree and receive incentives for doing so. So far 100 Marula trees have been procured for adoption. A formula will be used to determine how ‘green’ schools are by taking care of their trees. Dwarsrivier Mine will be visiting the schools to encourage them to keep looking after their trees and to measure the growth of the trees. The learners were encouraged to save water and take care of the environment. The children each received a water bottle, T-shirt and foam cap from Dwarsrivier Mine. The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa (photograph right) also attended this event as the keynote speaker. Dwarsrivier Mine is proud to have been involved in Water Week and will continue to play a role in the communities surrounding it.

DWARSRIVIER MINE WRAPPER
DWARSRIVIER MINE
Reaching out when disaster strikes
In November 2011 a massive storm caused major damage to homes in the Kalkfontein/Nokaneng area. Some families were left out in the cold and Dwarsrivier Mine was part of the team who contributed towards helping them. The Mine bought tents as temporary shelter. These tents will be returned to the Mine and will be kept on standby for when an emergency situation arise again. Food parcels were also delivered.
Right: Ms Doreen Masha and her family were of the families who benefitted from the food parcels delivered by Dwarsrivier Mine. They are 13 family members and only 2 are employed. They mentioned that the storm was terrible and they were very scared. “We are all very happy about the food. Dwarsrivier brought us the parcels that helped a lot. Thank you to everyone”.
Engaging with stakeholders
Dwarsrivier Mine held their Bi-annual Stakeholder Breakfast hosted by the General Manager of Dwarsrivier Mine on the 15th of February 2011. The mine had anopportunity to raise achievements, current status and future plans. All stakeholders also had an opportunity to raise their concerns and give compliments. This successful event was attended by community leaders, politicials, businessmen, the media and other relevant stakeholders of the Mine.
The Mosotho familiy. Six people live inside the tent. Mr Mosotho is blind and still gets emotional when he speaks of the storm. “We just heard this loud noise on the roof and off it went as well asthe walls of the house. Then the hail came in. We found two of the corrugated iron sheets and an old mattress so we all sat on it and clung to the corrugated iron sheets to keep the rain away,” he said. He now complains about ear problems after being in the rain that night. “The food, everything Dwarsrivier brought helped us very much. The mealie meal (maize) and soup, everything helped a lot”.
