New life for Nkwe Platinum

Isaiah 62:6 - I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence, (King James Bible “Authorized Version”, Cambridge Edition)

Platinum company Nkwe Platinum Limited (listed on the Australian stock exchange) has announced the completion of the $20 million convertible bond transaction with Jin Jiang Mining Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group Limited). Executive Director, Mr Peter Landau, said Nkwe has formed a strategic partnership with Jin Jiang to further develop Nkwe’s South African PGM Assets, in particular the flagship Garatau Mining Project near Burgersfort.

Developments around this project has been extremely slow during the past year or two. As part of this partnership, Jin Jiang invested $20 million in Nkwe through a placement of 3 year convertible bonds. Following issue of the Convertible Bonds, and as previously announced on 7 March 2014, Nkwe and Jin Jiang agreed to an immediate conversion of the $20m Bonds and the company has issued Jin Jiang 202,576,000 shares (Conversion Shares) in satisfaction for conversion of all of the Bonds. The conversion means Nkwe has expedited the previous debt to equity timelines with Jin Jiang and provides Nkwe with a strong balance sheet as it moves into the key project development phase. As part of the strategic partnership with Zijin and with effect from completion, Mr Abraham Li has been appointed as Managing Director and Mr Robin Wang has been appointed as a non executive director of Nkwe. Mr Sharif Pandor has been appointed as non executive Chairman of Nkwe. Mr Maredi Mphahlele will remain as an executive director of the company. Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd is one of China’s leading Mining Group’s registered in China, with its head office in Shanghang County, Fujian province. Commenting on the strategic partnership with Zijin, Nkwe Platinum Limited Chairman, Sharif Pandor, said “The Strategic Partnership with Zijin will allow Nkwe to fulfill its key goal of developing its world class PGM assets, and in particular the Garatau PGM Project, and becoming a significant producer of platinum group metals. “Zijin are one of China’s leading major mining houses who see Nkwe’s PGM assets as a key focus as they look at the expansion of their overseas mining operations.” “We are extremely excited to have a partner as significant and financially and operationally capable as Zijin working with us on the development of our world class PGM assets.”

Mathabatha warns that corruption will not be tolerated in Limpopo administration On Wednesday this week Mr Chupu Standley Mathabatha was elected as the premier of the Limpopo provincial government. It is approximately 9 months since Mr Mathabatha was sworn in as premier of the province. After the 7 May elections his mandate was renewed. Upon the acceptance of his position he thanked the ANC for their trust and confidence. “Your confidence in me has placed on my shoulders and those of other deployees a necessary burden to work diligently and tirelessly to change the lives of our people for the better,” he said. He acknowledged the challenges in service delivery saying: “We dare not fail. We are called upon to work together to ensure that we create job opportunities for the jobless; that we accelerate the provision of houses for the homeless, above all, deliver water and electricity to the most needy in the vast farmlands and far-flung villages of Limpopo. Underpinning our electoral mandat is also a responsibility to ensure the empowerment of young people through quality education and training”. He told the legislature that today 87% of households in the province are electrified and 86% of households have access to water. The province is caring for 96% of learners that are on the School Nutrition Programme and that the pass rate of 71% is something on which to build.

He stressed the importance of creating conditions that are conducive for business to thrive and help the people of Limpopo to participate in the country’s mainstream economy. “We commit ourselves to jealously guard against any tendency that seeks to reverse the gains of the past twenty years of freedom and democracy. At the core of these tendencies are crime and corruption. We therefore implore on all of you to join us in our renewed efforts to fight corruption. Corruption is not only a government problem, it is a societal problem that require all of us to play our role, be it the ruling party, opposition, business, organised business and members of the public. On our part as government we will definitely not tolerate people who use state resources for personal enrichment”. Calling on all parties and individuals involved in the province administration to work united to create a better tomorrow he concluded his acceptance speech with the following message: “We are recommitting the new administration to the building of an inclusive economy that create jobs and prioritise rural development. In keeping with our commitment to accessible primary health care to all and quality education, the provision of adequate human capital and the improvement of infrastructure in our schools and health facilities, will be high on the agenda of this administration”.

Youth Chamber of Commerce launched The Limpopo Youth Chamber of Commerce and Industries has been officially launched following a successful provincial conference held on the 15-16 May 2014 in Polokwane. The inaugural conference was attended by young entrepreneurs from all districts in the province. The chamber was also delighted by the overwhelming pledge made by various stakeholders to support the small and medium sized enterprises owned by young people in the province. “We also welcome the effortsof the Honorable MEC Seaparo Sekwati by establishing a “youth fund for young entrepreneurs” that seeks to incubate and support the emerging enterprises. We believe this will go a long way in shaping the economic landscape in the province.”

Where to now?

The entrance to the police station in Ohrigstad is under construction. Platinum Gazette took this photograph last week when the newspaper’s delivery person ventured inside to drop off the station’s newspapers. Being reprimanded by the contractors for walking through their construction site we were quick to ask about a notice where one should go as there is no indication of an alternative entrance and no warning to stay away from the entrance to the Community Service Centre. The answers from the contractor was not in family friendly language, but for those not visiting the station regularly we could establish that an alternative entrance is available at the back of the Community Service Centre building.

Xtreme buddies now local If you are a rehabilitated addict or still recovering from addiction (drugs, alcohol, pornography, prescription medicine, smoking etc) local aftercare and support is now at hand. This week, the Xtreme Buddies Christian Support and Aftercare Ministry for Steelpoort/Burgersfort was launched in Steelpoort in association with Regeneration House from Emalahleni (Witbank). Tienie van Wyngaard of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church in Steelpoort, who heads the local initiative told the newspaper that a large number of people go for rehabilitation elsewhere in the country, but when they return home, their environment, friends and ‘triggers’ for their addiction are still the same and can pose a problem if someone wants to remain ‘clean’. As a result, if the ‘triggers’ prove to be too strong and if circumstances around a former

addict’s life do not change, they relapse and it is then very difficult to go again for rehabilitation. In this regard the new initiative will strive to be a support base for former addicts who find it difficult to resist urges to relapse and give in to their addiction again. He said people who need support should already be rehabilitated as the group will not rehabilitate existing addicts. The Xtreme Buddies group will support former addicts with Biblical therapy/counselling, drug information, parent support, arrange for admission at long term Biblical therapy centres, support addict during their long term programme and aftercare outside the programme regarding how to start over and important life skills. People who need to contact the group can contact Tienie van Wyngaard at 087 808 5604 or 079 836 8719.

Isuzu KB 250 4 x 2

Where nails learn about tough ... Looking for something as tough as nails to carry a load? The Isuzu KB 250 standard 4x2 or Fleetside (the one with larger wheels and tyres and manual air conditioner) may be the answer to your dreams. The newspaper took the standard derivative from Westvaal Steelpoort for a spin this week, and although this bakkie is bare bones, we were still mightily impressed. ‘Spin’ is maybe not the right word as the trusted diesel engine does not have a turbo, meaning you may have more time to take in the environment as the vehicle gets up to speed. 58 kW may not be much, but felt strangely very adequate. Torque also kicks in low, 170 Nm is available at 1800 revolutions. The bakkie is large for all sorts of work, whether you are a contractor, small businessman, farmer or an ordinary guy living in a village who wants to transport all sorts of stuff, including chickens, other animals or a crop of cabbage. The vehicle certainly gave the impression it will last. Not a sports car and it will certainly be an irritation on a steep mountain pass (not for you, but for the stronger, faster other guys behind you). You will irritate them in comfort as the bakkie rides extremely well on tar and on gravel, even without a load. But you should also be careful. The bakkie is fitted with side protection bars. That’s it. No alarm, no immobiliser, no central locking, no ABS, EBD or any other abbreviated gizmo to save you if you make a mistake and no airbags (and no funny fault codes on the dash). You should also be very content with you or your partner’s company or voice. Infotainment in the vehicle will consist of exactly that if you do not fit your own. No playing around then, and what is left in the cabin is easy to master. The essential stuff we all learned about in the K53 and before that. There are bottle holders in the doors (going to need them in the non air con model). The seating arrangement is good. The driver’s seat adjusts for rake and reach independently from the small bench next to it. The small bench has two safety belts, a three point one for the main passenger on the left and a lap belt for the incidental (preferably smaller) passenger that can squeeze into the middle. What was clear from our trip is that General Motors South Africa did not fuzz around or changed specs just for the sake of changing. They did not break what is not broken. This Isuzu bakkie is exactly what it is meant to be. Tough, reliable and unbreakable, and if you are older than a certain age it will almost certainly outlive you and your business if you look after it. We want one, we have a ton to move (preferable the one with the air conditioner). You can get yours from Westvaal Steelpoort for R204 000 (standard) or R221 000 (Fleetside).

Your opinion: Should there be more As politicians were sworn in at Parliament this week the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) vented their disappointment with the number of women appointed by the ANC to serve as premiers in the 8 provinces the party won. Only Sylvia Lucas in the Northern Cape will bring a female presence to this level of government within the ANC. The ANC has committed to appoint female speakers in the provinces with male premiers. In 2009 the ANC appointed 4 female premiers. The CGE called on the ANC to reconsider the appointments. Platinum Gazette asked readers what they think about this gender ratio and If they agree with the CGE. Mr Gift Kgwedi said: “That is unfortunate. We are moving backwards. It seems only the men score points and they forgot all their promises about equality. They are doing a man on man”.

Mr Ananias Chauke said: “It depends on the way people are voting. It also depends on the President – who he wants at that moment. The names are submitted and one gets chosen. It depends on who has the favour of the President at that moment, irrespective of gender”.

Ms Avashoni Tshilande, Ms Lehlogonolo Makatelele and Ms Irene Phala said: “They must add more women to the rank of premier. It can’t be just one from the ANC. Women also have a say – we also vote! Let the women lead, it can’t always be men. Let it be 50/50. Women are also strong. Basadi – we have the power!”

Left: Mr Frans Manyaka said: “There is a good reason to rather appoint men. The men are stronger at the moment”.

Mr Ally Kobo and Mr Kenneth Masemola said: “They must be balanced. They must get more female premiers. speakers are not premiers. It is as if they are giving the speaker positions to the women as a consolation prize”.

Mr Vincent Serage and Mr Bafana Mkhawane said: “They must empower women. They should have gone 50/50. Now Zille is empowering women, but the ANC is not doing the same. It seems there is nothing we can do as Zuma has been elected as the President again”.

Me.

women appointed as premiers?

Mr David Mokoailane said: “To me it is not good. They must be 50/50. They are paid the same when they occupy the same position and do the same work for that money. Second in charge as the speaker does not make up for losing out on the premier position”.

Mr Doctor Masinga said: “They are right to appoint only one woman. The women did not do enough the last time they were appointed. That is why their numbers were reduced”.

Mr Abram Phako said: “They must be 50/50. They should have been fair. Women have the qualities to do the job. The premier and the speaker are not the same. The speaker reports to the premier”. With him are Hope and Penelope.

Mr Isaac Mohlabane and Mr Gadson Komane said: “It depends on the active participation of women in political activities. It is not a step backward. We are now looking at people who are active. We cannot chose randomly just for the sake of equality”. With them is Mpho.

Mr Mpho Talane said: “There is no difference as long as the right people are appointed. As long as they can deliver to us. It can be any gender as long as they are suitable for the position. These things of gender and colour are holding us back. If he or she is good, put them there, irrespective of their colour or gender”. Links: Mnr.

Mr Steve Mosoma said: “Women are not strong enough to face the men. Especially if there are problems. They are intimidated by people like Julius Malema. They are not strong enough to stand up for what must be done”. Mr Lawrence Kgoete said: “Women are not stronger than men. It is the right thing to appoint them as speakers”.

Mnr. Pierre Venter sê: “Dis ‘n stappie agteruit. Van 4 na 1 is negatief. Die speakers maak nie op vir die min premiers nie”.

Ms Surprise Moropane said: “They must have more women premiers. They undermine our rights. They must not give them second in charge positions. We must all be equal”.
