XXXX the mystery

Gazette

The ANC as a political party is taking a beating everywhere and this week proved to be no exception with the violence that erupted because of a dispute between some residents of the Tshwane Metro and the party leadership about who the candidate for the municipality’s mayor should be in the coming local government elections on 3 August this year. Here at home, Stan Ramaila, the deputy chairperson of the African National Congress’ Sekhukhune Region has been nominated as candidate for executive mayor of the Sekhukhune District Municipality. Current district mayor, Mogobo David Magabe, is not on the nominations list and will probably be redeployed somewhere else by the party. So far, so good. The real problem is person XXXX, who according to the party’s nomination list, has been nominated as mayor of the new massive combined Greater Tubatse / Fetakgomo local municipality after 3 August. Which means the party has not made up it’s mind about XXXX, and the question is how they will approach this problem as the ANC Youth League in Limpopo is not happy about XXXX. In a press release the movement says: “The ANCYL is however perplexed by delibarate and sinister attempts to block the name of our Provincial Chairperson Cde Vincent Shoba to be pronounced as Mayoral candidate of Tubatse/Fetakgomo new Municipality. The ANCYL has learned with shock that even Shoba’s name enjoyed majority of PEC members in the last PEC meeting, certain individuals with borrowed power ruled against the name in favor of Mr xxxx …” The press release ends with “The ANCYL will follow with interest on how the matter of Tubatse is to be handled, but we promise to continue frowning at anyone who doesn’t want us.” So there you have it, Greater Tubatse / Fetakgomo is a problem with regard to a mayoral candidate. Current Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Councillor Ralepane Mamekoa, seemed very popular with the people at last week’s State of the Local Municipality Address at Eerstegeluk (photograph left), but insiders say nobody can really predict the ANC’s decision. Who knows, maybe the position is earmarked for a woman?

SOLMA Looking at the future

A crowd gathered at Eerstegeluk near Steelpoort last week Saturday to listen to Greater Tubatse Mayor, Councillor Ralepane Mamekoa’s State of the Local Municipality Address. Cllr Mamekoa again highlighted the main points in the municipality’s budget for the next period, as well as the achievements of the previous years as reported in this and other newspapers recently. He also reminded the audience that after the local government elections Greater Tubatse Municipality and Fetakgomo Local Municipality will combine to form one municipality. He lamented the serious service delivery protests that characterized the local government’s latest term of office and pledged that the government will try to accelerate the pace of service delivery. He added that “we must voice our disappointment at the behaviour displayed by protesters in marches. Most of our roads are in bad state as a result of the burning of tyres and barricades that have developed into potholes. Our people have lost their lives due to those potholes that have been created by us. These are type of actions that must be condemned in strongest terms and we cannot remain silent when properties are destroyed and lives ruined. We would like to call upon our people to respect infrastructure laid by government and social partners and to show any form of dissatisfaction in a dignified and respectable manner”. The mayor said in Greater Tubatse the dependency index is still 8, which means that an average of eight people depend on one income, which is too high. He also lamented the global economic meltdown and low commodity prices that hit the mining sector in the area negatively, resulting in high unemployment. He said retail and government also suffered because of the meltdown and a collective approach is needed to survive the economic crisis. He said investment is needed to assist and grow our economy, increase the capacity of infrastructure, rail and road network and importantly create many job opportunities. “This can only happen if we restore investor confidence in our region by creating an atmosphere conducive for investments. Barricading on national roads and burning of trucks will scare investors away and we must learn to sit around the table and settle matters amicably without resorting to violence”. Cllr Mamekoa thanked mining companies and mines by name for their contribution in assisting government with service delivery in communities and said that they will be approached to assist with electrification as well. He said government was not happy that the leadership of communities was divided in their standoff with mines about various issues since May 2015, saying “We are busy facilitating the dialogue between the groups and are confident that the matter will be settled to the satisfaction of everybody”. Mayor Mamekoa also had some advice for the youth in his speech, saying, “We must shift from a mindset that opportunities exist in the Mining sector only. There are many opportunities in Agriculture and Tourism sector that youth can tap into. We want to take this moment and encourage you to come out of the shell and show your creativity in establishing businesses that can grow the local economy. In that way we will be creating a legacy that will be celebrated in the next 40 years by the next generation. One of the priorities of the current government is Education and we must emphasise to the youth that they must go to school and get educated in order to create a better future”. He also reiterated that local government will continue to assist poor and deserving students with bursaries to further their studies.

Fascinating Womanhood hosts successful conference

Man dies after community members take the law in own hands Murdered for alleged theft More than 120 women attended.

The police at Ohrigstad arrested 6 men during the evening of 16th June after they brutally assaulted a man who was found trying to steal their property at Longsight next to Ohrigstad railway crossing. The victim of the assault died of his injuries. The deceased was allegedly found trying to steal and was identified as the one who stole two cellphones and cash during May although a case was not reported to the police. The six men allegedly started assaulting the suspected thief until he confessed to the crimes committed during May. He also gave them information about the whereabouts of the two cellphones. Instead of calling the police, the six men decided to tie the man up with a rope and went to look for the cellphones which were recovered at the man’s home at Dresden. Upon their arrival back from fetching the cell phones, they found that the man has passed on. The police were then called to the scene and the six men were arrested and charged with murder. They appeared at Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on Monday 20 June and they were all denied bail and reminded in custody until their next appearance on the 27June 2016 for a bail application. “The police strongly condemn this kind of acts and we urge our community to work with the police and not to take the law into their own hands.” Const. Phokane from the Ohrigstad SAPS said. (Information: Const. K. Phokane, Ohrigstad SAPS)

Leadership lessons from private security Dolf Scheepers, a well-known face in the local (and national) private security scene is releasing his book “Lions Leading Lions - creating winning tactics for leaders”. The reader can follow his story as he shares the lessons learned in over 30 years in the military and private sector. This is a compelling and powerful leadership guide that will get you thinking about leadership in an entirely new way. To give you an idea of what you’ll find in this thought-provoking book, here is a direct quote from the author himself: “Find the strength within yourself, find the conviction to become the best you can be, and in doing so you will encounter the magnitude of your purpose, you will hear the roar, and you will find the courage of the lion”. Dolf served in the former South African Defense Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and moved to the private sector in 1995 following a highly successful career in the military. Over the years he advanced from pure operational security management, in various industry sectors, and attained experience in business management. Leaders in the security industry have expressed

great enthusiasm for the book, as it is the first of its kind in South Africa. Managing private security in South Africa isn’t easy. It’s a task that has to be performed under severe conditions in an overstocked market, under-priced service, low-paid staff and a generally deteriorating work-force. This book gives insight into this, along with the greatest lessons that can be learned in the private security industry. The writer of this book, Jacques de Villiers, stated the following – “I have spoken to many of Dolf’s colleagues, friends, family members and staff – and the responsiveness has been indistinguishably awe-inspiring. I can best encapsulate the sentiment of all, in words previously uttered by Jack Welch – Success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others. I promise you, you won’t take leave of the pages, unchanged”. Look out for the book being launched soon in stores.
