Career wise This week again saw thousands of grade 11 learners from schools in the area attending the annual mines’ Eastern Limb HRD Forum Career Expo. This year the expo was hosted by Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines at Winterveld Club in Steelpoort where mines, related private enterprises and government showcased a myriad of industry related futures to learners, with the emphasis on the results they will need at the end of matric to qualify for training and bursary opportunities. In this regard the Mining Qualifications Authority’s stall proved to be very popular. Mr Emile Britz, General Manager of Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines, welcomed quests at the event and stressed the mining sector in the area’s continued commitment to local skills development and community upliftment. Speaking to quests on behalf of the MEC of Education in Limpopo, the Department’s Head of Corporate Service’s, Ms Maylene Broderick, put the emphasis on the need for educational development in Sekhukhune District. The commended the mining sector for showcasing the opportunities in the sector and their commitment to school’s development, but lamented at the same time the fact that so few learners from the area actually enter the field because of shortcomings still prevalent in school training. She also stated that the number of learners that drop out in grade 11 is still far too high and needs attention. In this regard she told guests that several actions plans from the Department’s side are in place and implemented to improve school learning. Left: Some of the functionaries from government and the mining sector who attended the expo: From left to right: Pieter Brits (HR Manager Samancor ECM), Emile Britz (GM Samancor ECM), Leandra van der Merwe (Head of Training and Development Khuphuka Samancor), Balebetsi Motaung (MEC Support Staff), Marther Pau (MEC Support Staff) and Maylene Broderick (Manager Corporate Services Department of Education).

Proverbs 6 : 6 – 11 “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest 11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man”.

Taking business empowerment to the next level On Tuesday 21 October Modikwa Platinum Mine’s acting Business Leader, Mr Tumi Molapo hosted a business breakfast at the mine. The event was attended by a various stakeholders such as contractors, SMMEs, representatives from ARM, the Greater Tubatse Municipality and the local traditional authorities. The programme was short but to the point and the business people grabbed the opportunity to learn more about projects at Modikwa and to network with each other. During the official programme Mr Tumi Molapo, the acting Business Leader for Modikwa Platinum Mine outlined the mine’s background and socioeconomic development commitments. One of the milestones for the company in this regard is the R100 million that was invested in community development projects over the last five years. Approximately R177 million is being budgeted for community development through social and labour plans in the next five years. This money will be spent within the Greater Tubatse Municipality in which the mine is situated. It was also emphasised that local companies are earmarked to execute the majority of the work for these projects. Modikwa’s Local Procurement Policy (LPP) include a clause that states that should it not be a local company that is awarded the tender, that company should make use of local contractors to do at least 30% of the work. Through the implementation of this policy R100 million worth of work was awarded to HDSA companies this year alone. Although this policy requires the mine to set aside some of the available opportunities for local companies it is also very firm that there should be no compromise on the quality or standard, safety and competitiveness of prices when it comes to doing the work. During the morning’s event representatives from Joxicom (Waste Management), Big O Trading (Cleaning), Khulong Ya Hwashi (Engineering Repairs) and Phothoma Security (Security) spoke of their successes as local companies that were

empowered through the mine. Ms Dorcas Molomo , the Community and Business Development Coordinator, told the group that workshops are being held for emerging entrepreneurs who are awarded a contract with the mine. “We believe, to provide continuous support to help grow the businesses in the area. Sometimes you will have to learn new skills and un-learn bad habits to ensure that your company will grow as it should.” The mine was praised for the commitment towards development and creating prosperity in the area when Cllr. Emanuel Mokgoga took to the podium. He spoke on behalf of GTM Mayor, Cllr. Ralepane Mamekoa. He said: “We have a wonderful relationship with Modikwa. Look at the clinics, roads and other things Modikwa have brought to our communities. We as government are behind Modikwa and would like the mine to grow even more”. He and other speakers appealed to communities to not destabilise the mine because they are not satisfied with service delivery. The morning’s activities ended with a hearty breakfast while business networking was taken to the next level.

Mr Tumi Molapo, Acting Business Leader of Modikwa Platinum Mine and his team hosted a business breakfast.

After the formal presentation, a question and answering session took place before breakfast was served.

The business breakfast was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from ARM, local authorities, GTM municipality, contractors and other SMMEs.

In Burgersfort businesses and organisations have a tendancy to leave their advertising material fixed to lamp posts months after their opening or the event’s scheduled date. This week political posters for the election in May was still visible as well as opening announcements for shops that welcomed customers through their doors at the begining of the year. People fixing advertising material to road signs should remember that they run the risk of being fined as it is illegall to fix any type of advertising to a road sign.
