Do something A stinking mess This week RAL CEO, Mr Matji resigned and in a statement issued by RAL’s Board he was praised for many successes. One road in the Burgersfort area is however not much of a success story. Many meetings and promises has been made surrounding the D737 road that creates a link between the R37 and the R555 past Lapeng Guest Lodge. In February last year pledges were made to repair and rebuild sections of this road. The road is however still in utter disrepair and can at some sections be declassified from tar to a dangerous gravel road. No proper work has been done to date. Another road that urgently needs attention is the D2537 leading past Dresden and Alverton towards Praktiseer.

Samancor ECM delivers ‘Back to School’ packs for Grade 1 learners G

rade 1 learners from Steelpoort Academy, Mangabane Primary School and Makgakantshe Primary School were the happy recipients of ‘Back to School’ packs. They received the backpacks containing a pencil case, pen, pencil, sharpener and ruler on Friday, 18 January 2019. This donation was made possible through the funds raised during the annual Samancor ECM Golf Day in 2018. Education is one of the priority areas towards which Samancor ECM is channeling support and funding. Realising that times are tough, this donation makes it easier on parents of children starting in Grade 1. A total of 130 children in Steelpoort Academy, 90 in Mangabane Primary School and 50 in Makgakantshe Primary School benefitted. Samancor ECM would like to thank all the sponsors who contributed and support the annual Charity Golf Day. The impact of your actions ripples out to touch the lives of many young minds in the area long after the day. RAL CEO resigns Matji praised for his contributions This week the Board of Directors of Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) SOC announced that they accepted the resignation request of Mr Maselaganye Petrus Matji, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RAL. He stated personal reasons for the resignation. “The Board is appreciative of the leadership that Mr Matji has provided in stabilising the Agency, leaving the organization in a much better state than he found it. Mr Matji is serving notice until the 31 March 2019,” says Board Chairperson Mr Matome Ralebipi. Mr Matji is the first CEO appointed by the Board of RAL on a five-year contract, from 1 March 2015 to 29 February 2020, after the Agency was effectively returned from a Section 100 administration in early 2014 after a tumultuous period of lack of leadership, mismanagement and systematic collapse of corporate governance. RAL erstwhile host department, the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport, was one of the five provincial government departments placed under administration by national government from 2011 to 2014. The key achievements of RAL during Mr MATJI’S four year tenure include: Stabilizing the Agency: Putting policies, processes, internal controls and procedures to ensure effective operation and management of the Roads Agency Limpopo. Improving the audit opinion of the Agency by the office of the Auditor-General of South

Raising close to half a billion rands from the private sector, through the Agency’s breakthrough Strategic Partnership Approach, a key tenet of 2015-2020 now successful turnaround strategy. These funds now at R482 million, have helped augment the Agency’s constraint budget and put a dent on backlogs in the province. Completing over 70 road infrastructure projects across Limpopo Province. Used the same road infrastructure delivery as a vehicle for driving village economy by investing in local Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and creating jobs. Just over R458m has been spent on local SMME empowerment and an impressive R325m in local labour spending. The Board will begin the search for the new CEO and expressed their pleasure to announce that it has appointed Mr Gabriel Maluleke, (seconded from the Board) with effect from 1 April 2019 as the interim CEO until the recruitment process is successfully concluded. Maluleke is a qualified Chartered Accountant, CA (SA) with 25 years of experience. He is also a qualified business rescue practitioner. ‘The Board wishes Mr Matji all the best in his future endeavours” a statement issued by RAL concluded.

Fix it up After the recent rains, many of Burgersfort’s roads started developing gaping and dangerous potholes. This week however saw a team starting to fix some of them at major intersections like the one to Tubatse Crossing Mall. It is good news to see such crucial work being done de-

spite the local municipality’s current status of being under administration. It must however be noted that the R37 on which work was done, (called Dirk Winterbach road for the stretch running through Burgersfort town) is a national road and not a municipal road.
