This week ten years ago the first Platinum Gazette newspaper saw the light as an independent publication in the area. The newspaper’s editor had said goodbye to the corporate media world as a manager of a number of newspapers and a printing press to do his own thing to large scepticism of basically everybody (as the printed media is a dog eats dog environment). With very limited resources the first issue saw the light and the fledgling publication almost saw its demise in the brutal recession that followed the next year. Thank you to everybody, advertisers and readers alike who bought into our unique business model to make our newspaper a success in a still brutal recessionary environment (again). We literally exist by the Grace of God and try to give witness to it every week.

Sekhukhune District Municipality recovers R4.78 million of R5.45 million

‘We got some of the money back’ The Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila held a media conference in last Monday in Polokwane where he announced that the municipality recovered some of the money that was fraudulently paid into the wrong accounts last year. Addressing the media the mayor said ”We have called you here today, following the events that unfolded between the 5th and the 09th July 2018, where a fraudulent activity that led to payment of four (4) transactions into incorrect banking accounts on the 05th and the 09th July 2018 where made. The municipality has paid an amount of R4 503 122.19 on the 5th July 2018 and also paid an amount of R948 891.93 on the 09th July 2018 into wrong accounts. The total amount paid into wrong accounts in R5 452 014,12. Upon the discovery of the incident the following interventions where made by the Acting Executive Mayor, Acting Municipal Manager and the Acting Chief Financial Officer: All financial institutions were immediately informed of the fraudulent activitiy and were instructed to freeze all the accouts; The Acting Municipal Manager appointed a firm of forensic auditors from the panel of accountants to institute forensic investigations into the matter; A firm of attorneys was also appointed to engage with the banks and approach the court for the court order to freeze the funds and also seek redress from the primary banker and other banks who continued to allow withdrawals even though an instruction was issued to freeze the funds; A criminal case was opened with the SAPS in Groblersdal and the case number is 57/7/2018; As a precautionary measure measure, four (4) officials have been suspended pending internal labour processes by the district municipality. Legally, this might lead the municipality into incurring a fruitless and wasteful expenditure as a results of funds not being recovered. The matter was communicated with SAPS and the case is already with the HAWKS. And both Treasury and Auditor General of South Africa was notified of the fraudulent activity”. He said that the matter has been in the public space for a long time and the executive of the Sekhukhune District Municipality felt it was necessary announce that R4 788 306.30 of the money had been recovered, with the balance still outstanding, saying “It is worth noting that all the money stated as recovered has been deposited back into the district municipality’s account. And further note that apart from the four (4) officials who have been suspended in July, further two (2) officials have been served with intention to suspend, making the total number of officials six (6). Lastly, the HAWKS are continuing with their investigations and at an appropriate time, they will release a statement individually”.

Working together to make a difference Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) together with the Boleng Trust is helping local Ngwaabe area schools to make a difference in their environment and communi es. Last week they visited Maphooko Primary School in Maveven Village and Nkokoane Primary School in Ga-Mampuru. This kick-started a conserva on driven project that will encourage schools to ac vely become involved in recycling and taking care of their immediate environment. Special bins for specific types of waste was delivered to the schools. Learners are encouraged to collect waste paper, plas c, cans and glass for recycling. A talk about the project and the importance of conserva on in general was delivered by Steven Lindemann, founder of the Conserva on Educa on Protec on Program (CEPP). Lindemann introduced the concept of recycling and ac vely conserving to the learners. They were encouraged to par cipate in the project and adopt the project’s mo o - “Alone I can make a difference, together we can make a difference”. Learners are encouraged to think of their own recy-

cling ini a ves. The presenta on was interac ve with learners represen ng the food chain in nature and the impact that elimina ng one of the links can have. Follow-up visits to the schools will also include amongst others talks about pollu on and global warming, water and deser fica on as well as human encroachment, habitat loss and poaching. During these talks schools will receive educa onal aids to keep the children aware of the issues that were discussed. Learners should start seeing themselves as part of the ecosystem. CEPP also commi ed themselves to assist any system, idea, concept or product that is really worth developing coming from the learners of these schools. “We will assist that child in moving the idea forward and establishing it,” Lindemann said. Recycling projects can be a profitable income to schools and communi es alike. Various types of recycling can be done for cash, while some are done purely to conserve the environment and reap the benefits for future genera ons. DCM believes that the children are the future of the country and the impact they can make on nature, now and in the future is immeasurable.

O’Dilhea is beste Graad Communities asked to R juffrou in provinsie! report non-compliant Juffrou O’Dilhea Keulder is verlede week tydens die National Teachers’ Awards (NTAs) se provinsiale prysuitdeling as die beste Graad R onderwyseres in Limpopo aangewys. O’Dilhea is ‘n juffrou by Steelpoort Akademie en haar klas was hierdie week sommer baie trots op hul Juffrou.

liquor traders “Communities are encouraged to report any non-compliant liquor traders in their area to the police”. The Director of Commercial Law and Policy at the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), Mr Desmond Ramabulana said this during an education and awareness campaign to educate communities on the positive impact of legislation administered by the dti. Ramabulana said tavern owners and other alcohol outlets have to act responsibly and in line with the prescription of their business licences. These requirements include the non-selling of alcohol to children and preg-

nant women. “We have established that many local liquor traders do not comply with the rules of the National Liquor Authority (NLA). Many cases have surfaced where under-age children and pregnant women were sold alcohol which is against the law. We urge everyone within the community to report these transgressions,” said Ramabulana. He stressed that some business people took advantage of the fact that there was no bylaw enforcement on some of their businesses, and that led to a certain level of misuse of liquor in the society.

Help find his family

Do not disclose your SASSA pin The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned old age and disability grant beneficiaries to appoint trustworthy procurators to withdraw their social grants on their behalf at ATMs, post offices or at merchants. This will prevent the withdrawal of their grants without their knowledge and approval. The Mpumalanga SASSA said it has discovered that old age and disability grant beneficiaries are making the mistake of disclosing their PIN codes to relatives to assist in collecting their social grants. “Revealing a PIN code to an untrustworthy person could allow that person to

withdraw the social grant payment and cause undue hardship,” the agency said in a statement on Thursday. Beneficiaries are advised to protect and safeguard their PIN codes by not writing their PIN on the card, not giving their PIN number to anyone over the phone and when making a purchase they should not let a store clerk enter their PIN number. The agency said beneficiaries should also not ask for assistance from strangers at ATMs when withdrawing money. SASSA encouraged beneficiaries to report any of these acts at the nearest police station. This will help protect them from criminal activities.

Dwarsrivier expands investment in educaƟon with mobile libraries

This week thousands of books made their way to five high schools in the Ngwaabe area. This formed part of the mobile library project Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) and the Boleng Trust started last year. Last year mainly primary schools benefited from the roll-out, but this year Mashego Secondary School, Sengange Secondary School,

Ngwaabe High School, Ngwanangwato Secondary School and Seokgome Secondary School were the main beneficiaries. These schools are not close to any public libraries and learners have a major disadvantage when it comes to resources like books. DCM values educa on and believes that through educa on, future genera ons can improve not only their own circumstances, but make a difference in communi es as a whole. The books delivered to the schools are a mixture of fic on and educa on. There are enough books to enable each grade to do proper and updated research for various school subjects and projects. There is also a great variety of fic on for the pure enjoyment of reading that will set the imagina on free. Each mobile library is dedicated to a specific grade. The books com-

pliment that year’s curriculum and age group. The grade 12 mobile libraries alone contain more than 1 000 books. Each school received mobile libraries for grades 8 to 12. Every school will have an appointed ‘teacher librarian’ who will receive training from a specialist team. The team will also visit the schools on a monthly basis to ensure that the schools are set to properly make use and take care of the mobile libraries. The ongoing support is seen as key to maximising the asset for each school. Schools will also be par cipa ng in exci ng compe ons that will encourage learners to take responsibility and cul vate a love of reading. The various schools thanked DCM and the Boleng Trust for their and excited learners and teachers could not wait to get started with reading the brand new books. As with the handover of the mobile libraries in 2017, the DCM team encourages the schools to make the most of the dona on and to take care of it so that it can become a legacy for future learners to come.

The libraries are filled to capacity with books.

Learners will be able to use the libraries to research school projects.
