esidents of Mankele village near Penge, have much to rejoice about as the new 12 km tarred road between Mankele and Penge was officially opened by Limpopo Premier, Cassel Mathale, on Tuesday. A brand new bridge over the Olifants River replaces the notorious and unsafe makeshift cable cars (segwaigwai) which they used previously to cross the river. “Many lives which were lost during the crossing of the river through segwaigwai did not perish in vain, for today we are here to open a monument that will always remind us of the history of our struggle for development,” Mathale said. The Premier said the provincial government was committed to delivering services to every corner of the province. “Every place has a historic traditional meaning to our people. Our heritage and origin as Africans is connected to the land of our ancestors. This means any forceful relocation of people will disconnect people from their history. This segwaigwai is very important, not only to the people of Mankele, but to all the people of Limpopo and humanity as a whole,” he said. The Premier said people of Mankele and surrounding villages had the responsibility to guard jealously against any person who intended to damage the bridge and road or

any other public infrastructure. “We have seen people damaging their own property during street protests for service delivery. The reality is that damaging public property in the name of demanding service delivery is not only a crime, but is also counter revolutionary as it relegates our people further down into the deep center of underdevelopment,” he said. Mathale said while there were naysayers who believed that a bridge could never be built over the Olifants River, the province was not prepared to fail the people of Mankele. “We were not prepared to fail or disappoint the people of Mankele, neither were we ready to abandon our responsibility to the people of Limpopo,” he said. It took 15 months of construction work to complete the bridge and the 12 kilometre tarred road. Forty labourers were employed during the construction phase. Mathale, who described Limpopo as the leader of development, said with the construction of the bridge, learners would now reach their respective schools easily, while workers will arrive at work on time. The event was also attended by the varois MECs, traditional leaders, Sekhukhune District Municiaplity Executive Mayor, Mogobo David Magabe and Greater Tubatse Municipality Mayor, Nokosi Josias Mahlake.
Cool weather marked the grand main event at Mamogolo next to the bridge.

Life plus 15 years for Who was this man? murder and robbery On 18 April David Nzambambi Sibanyoni (29) was sentenced to life imprisonment on charge of murder and also sentenced to 15 year imprisonment on charge of armed robbery in the Middelburg High Court The sentence follows after an incident in Riba Cross between 2008-06-13 and 200806-21 when a 32-year old man was robbed of his vehicle and killed. The matter was reported to Tubatse
Police on 21 June 2008 and the Police conducted their investigations that led to the arrest of three men. His two co-accused Oupa Makhado (21) and Bethuel Mokena (26) were remanded for trial on 03-05 December 2012 on the same charges. The Police say they hope the sentence will serve as deterrence to other people not to commit the same offences.
More than 30 arrested, fined On Friday 20 April Police in the Tubatse cluster, together with the provincial traffic officers, municipal traffic officers and department of home affairs conducted a cluster operation in Burgersfort. The cluster commander of the Police, Brigadier M S Ledwaba led the operation. The operation started at about 10:00 in Burgersfort where roadblocks were conducted on all four access roads entering the town. Thereafter the operation continued inside Burgersfort with patrols and stop and search. More than 30 people were arrested for contravening the Road Traffic Act and they were given fines for their offences.
Burgersfort Police requests anybody who knew the man who shot himself last week Friday morning in Burgersfort, to contact them. According to bystanders the man, known as Malepane, got out of a taxi just before the taxi rank at Twin City shopping centre on the Ohrigstad road, took out a handgun and shot himself. The Police say the man was probably in his early thirties and he did not have any identification on him. He died on the scene.

The newly constructed Mapodile Library was officially opened on World Book Day on 23 April. Previously the library was housed in a contianer, rendering services to residents of Eerstegeluk, Ga-Phasha and Ga-Mampuru. The local librarian, Ms Rachel Lewane did an excellent job with the limited resources available to her, but the need for a bigger facility remained. The library committe approached Samancor for assistance in constructing a new library. The container has now been replaced by a R2.8 million state of the art building sponsored by Tubatse Chrome. The building does not only have books, but also computers, a conference room and tables to study or just sit and read. It was opened by the MEC for Arts, Sports and Culture in Limpopo, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and Samancor CEO, Mr Jürgen Schalamon. Samancor Transformation manager Mr Archie Palane and General Manager of Tubatse Chrome, Mr Desmond McManus were also present to held hand-over the library to the community. In celebration of the opening a short function was hosted in a tent where representatives from the district as well as the local municipality, the Library and Information Association of South Africa, Mr Schalamon and the MEC had turns to address the audience. Everyone encouraged the community to make use of the library, to take care of it and grow their potential through it. They also confirmed their intentions to strengthen the relationship between the various stakeholders involved in the maintenance and creation of the library. The choir from Kgahlanong High School sang two songs to mark the occasion. After the speeches, the official ribbon cutting took place with dignitaries getting a first look at the new facility. Afterwards they were guided through the library and away to lunch. The Kgahlanong learners patiently stood singing songs of joy while they waited their turn to go and see where they will be able to come unearth new knowledge.

No service from Telkom If you had been calling Platinum Gazette’s Telkom line over the past month you would have thought we’ve disappeared. The cables for the landline were stolen at the end of March. On 26 March Platinum Gazette reported the fault. When we enquired about when the fault will be repaired, a consultant told us: “There is a note on the system it will not be repaired”. Of course we started phoning (on our cell phones) trying to find out how
Telkom could just decide to no longer repair a line they charge for. Eventually we spoke to a Senior Specialist: Media Relations within Telkom Group Communication. He asked us to give them a bit of time to respond to our questions. We wanted to know how many customers were affected? Why they do not communicate with their clients when a decision not to repair a line is made and what other options are available? A month has passed and we’ve received our latest account (yes, they bill you when the line is out of
order). After a stretched out phone call (see photo right - for which you pay standard cell phone rates) and being passed to four different people, we are no closer to a solution to our problem. Another batch of written enquiries to the Senior Specialist also remained without response by the time of going to press. Moral of the story...call on our cell phones please.

Into the community Tubatse Chrome gets busy
Senior personnel at Tubatse Chrome embarked on a different kind of team building exercise during the past week. No funny exercises and interaction at some exclusive bush lodge for them. They decided to get to know the communities around Steelpoort where the company operate, better. Tuesday and Wednesday you could find these personnel in community vegetable garden projects, and in kitchens at schools, assisting in preparing the food of feeding schemes. One was even caught with his cellphone next to his ear, running his office, while in the other hand he had a rake, tending the earth around newly planted cabbage. They also assisted with dishing out the food, used brooms to sweep, interacted with children and gave valuable talks to senior learners about subject choices and careers in the mining industry. “Together we worked as teams in getting to now what it is all about in our local communities. Our eyes where opened, in certain aspects it could be described as life changing” was the comment from one of the ‘community workers’.
This week sees Platinum Gazette implementing new technology to add value to the newspaper. From now on readers will regularly see QR Codes on some photographs. QR Code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside the industry due to its fast readability and large storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. The code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be made up of four standardized kinds (“modes”) of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, Kanji), or through supported extensions, virtually any kind of data. Invented by the Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicles during the manufacturing process, the QR Code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. It was designed to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. The purpose of these codes are to enable readers of the newspaper to link to a Youtube video relating to the content of the article with their smartphones. Android, Windows and IOS devices (Ipad and Iphone), as well as certain Symbian smartphones use their cameras together with a Code Reader Application (or more popularly known as an app that can be downloaded free from the relevant app stores) to go online and retrieve the relevant content (Youtube videos in Platinum Gazette’s case). Going online will incur data costs for the cellphone user. Readers who receive the e-mail newspaper on their PC will not have to use the QR codes. Photographs in the email newspaper that link to videos will have a red dotted line around them. Clicking on the photograph will ask for your permission to link to the video and play it. As with cellphones, data costs will be applicable.

Mr Joseph Malepe said: “Yes, I ‘ve seen the police day and night patrolling. I think they are doing a good job. It is very important because nowadays there are too many tsotsi’s trying to rob people”.
Platinum Gazette received the above letter this week. The letter thanks the Burgersfort SAPS for being more visible in town and for the good service visitors to the charge office now experience. We decided to ask other readers how they feel about the visibility and service of the local SAPS in recent months.
Mr Collin Mokgotho said: “Our policemen are working, but especially at the end of the month they are sometimes too lazy to work. They must patrol more at the taxi rank - I am a taxi driver”.
Mr Sandras Mokwena said: “No, I am not feeling safe because the police are aiming to get money from those who do crime in town. They arrest the people selling pirate CDs at the taxi rank but the police only take their money and CDs and then the people come back and are still selling illegal stuff”.
Mr Charles Milanzi said: “Yes, I’ve seen them moving up and down. When we see them we feel safe. Ja, they will make the crime to be less now”.
Mnr.
Mr Lovemore Larmo Furusa said: “Ja, I see them regularly. It is safer these days. They are almost everywhere all the time. We will absolutely have less crime now”.
Mr Teenage Shai said: “No, we don’t feel safe. Yes, we see the police but we don’t feel safe. Some of them are also involved in crime especially with the ATM bombings”.
Mr Jackson Kgwoedi said: “Yes, I’ve seen them and feel safe. They will have an effect on crime. I clock out late and previously I was scared to walk alone, but now I feel safe”.
Mnr Rex Mabunda sê: “Die polisie is baie by die dorp, maar hulle moet nie net ry nie, hulle moet die mense vang as dit nodig is”.
Mr Lawrence Mamabolo said: “Around town it is safe, but not in the rural areas. For now it is much better than before with the police”.
Me. Fienie Wuestenenk sê: “Ek hoop regtig hul patrollies het ‘n langtermyn effek. Dat hulle huidiglik sigbaar is, is wonderlik. Veral as ‘n mense alleen in die aand ry”. Mr Papie Makgate said: “Yes, I do see the police. They are moving around a lot. They are helping to reduce the crime”.
Mr Pontsho Mokgomo said: “Now it is better in town than last year with all the crime. Ja, we’ve seen them patrolling, but we still don’t feel safe. If they always work like they work now, we will be able to feel safe. They must still look into the selling of fake CDs and clothes that is the biggest crime in Burgersfort”.
Mr Nicholas Makutu and Mr Sakie Thobejane said: “Ja, we feel safe. When the police are patrolling like they do these days. They are reducing crime”.
Mr Amos Ndlovu said: “Yes, I’ve seen the police when they are moving around. We feel safe that Mnr Whity Ludick sê: “Toe hulle nou die they are reducing crime especially Mr Z Mtsweni said: “I think they will dag by my swaer ingebreek het, het ons at month-end.
