Not all roads are equal

Platinum

Gazette ONE DEAD IN SHOOT-OUT This road repair team was swaeting in the relentless sun on Wednesday at 14:00. The road in question is the one between Steelpoort and the R37 towards Lydenburg/mashishing. This road is almost non-existent between Lapeng Lodge and the railway line. One of the workers declared “We work hard, we must provide for our families”. Despite their positive attitude , the sad fact is that their work is probably in vain as this road is beyond repair for all to see ... An armed robbery in the Burgerfort CBD on Wednesday caused great exitement in town and also caused major traffic problems in the areas where the action took place as the Police cordoned off the relevant areas and temporarily closed the R555 route to Ohrigstad, causing very slow traffic on this route. At the time of the robbery Platinum Gazette’s personnel were attending an event in Ngwaabe on the other side of Steel Bridge towards Jane Furse and only gained knowledge of the drama in town by social media in a very weak cellphone reception area. According to the Police, the Police in Burgersfort, assisted by the SAPS Airwing searched for the suspects after an armed robbery that took place at Twin-city Complex in Burgersfort at about 10:10. Security officials from Fidelity were about to deliver cash at a local bank in the shopping centre and while walking towards the bank, four armed suspects accosted them. The suspects, armed with firearms, robbed the security officials from an undisclosed amount of cash that was carried in bags. A member from SBV Security Company who was in the vicinity noticed what was unfolding and reacted swiftly and notified the Police. The suspects fled the scene, using a Volkswagen Amarok bakkie, but the Police gave chase until the vehicle crashed into electricity distribution box next to St Thomas College. Mr Ben Fouché told the newspaper he was driving from the Fouché medical practice into the road to take his children’s lunch to Laerskool Burgersfort when the Amarok sped toward him, swerving over the road with a security vehicle in tow. Mr Fouché said he heard gunfire and shots were flying everywhere. “I remembered Psalm 91:5 which says: You will not be afraid of the terror by night, Or of the arrow that flies by day” ; I also quicly prayed that the villains be apprehended. I proceeded with my task at hand and when I returned from the school I saw the big commotion at the scene. My eyes went wide when I saw that the bakkie crashed at St Thomas College”. According to the Police some of the robbed money bags were dropped while the suspects were fleeing. One of the suspects was fatally wounded and the remaining three fled on foot. The police searched for them in the nearby mountains with the help of a helicopter. The police recovered two AK47 rifles, one pistol and one R5 rifle at the crash site. The vehicle was reported hijacked in Praktiseer policing area. Anyone with information is requested to contact Colonel Elias Zwane on 013 231 0200 or Crime Stop on 0860010111.

Major dagga bust The Ohrigstad police had a major success in taking drugs off the street when they arrested two men with more than 102kg of dagga in their possession. The arrests were made on Thursday 19 April 2018 at the R533 Ohrigstad-Graskop

Road. The two suspects, aged 35 and 38 years, were arrested after their VW Passat collided with a dump truck and the police were called to the accident scene. During investigation of the scene, the SAPS searched the suspects’ vehicle and discovered 7 bags of dagga weighing 102,22Kg. This has an estimated street value of R60-000. The police reacted swiftly and the two were immediately arrested and charged for possession of dagga. The police are still investigating where the dagga came from and where it was going to. The station commander of Ohrigstad SAPS, Capt Alphious Ramolotja commended the members for the focus they displayed and urged them to continue rooting out drugs on the streets. The two suspects appeared at Tubatse Magistrate’s Court on Friday 20 April and they were all granted bail of R1000 each. They will appear in court again in due course. The value of water conservaƟon underlined during Water Week celebraƟons

T

he Department of Water and Sanita on partnered with Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) to host the annual Water Week celebra ons in the Ngwaabe area. The event took place on Wednesday, 25 April 2018 and saw a variety of stakeholders talk about water conserva on, pla orms for communi es to express their challenges and concerns and plans for the future to improve access to water within the area to all communi es. The theme of the day was “Access to Safe Water by 2030 - Possible through Nature”. Speakers emphasized that community members should remember that climate change affects rainfall patterns and that in many areas drought condi ons are experienced. They also warned that even when dams seem to be full, water should be used sparingly as the next rainy season may not bring enough rain to fill the dams again. Lepelle Northern Water is one of the stakeholders tasked with supplying the area with potable water. They assured the audience that progress is being made and that they are hard at work to provide water to as many areas as possible. Ms Tsakani Mkhabela from DCM underlined DCM’s commitment to improve the struggles communi es experience with proper supply of water. The mine has a lengthy record of involve-

ment to improve infrastructure and assist through projects that improve water supply in communi es surrounding the mine. One of these is the Kalkfontein Water Project through which the mine first assisted through drilling bore holes and equipping them with pumps and access points for ease of use. The second phase of this project include the construc on of a 650 000 litre water reservoir, construc on of pump lines from four boreholes to the reservoir and water re cula on to the community. DMC has also assisted with numerous smaller projects to provide water at schools, improve sanita on through the construc on of ablu on facili es and drilling new boreholes at projects such as home based care facili es. “We take it one day at a me, one project at a me,” Ms Mkhabela said. Explaining that projects are dictated by the availability of funds and choosing projects is a process. Stakeholders appealed to the community members to take care of the infrastructure created by government and private stakeholders such as DCM. Damaged infrastructure will only push back new projects and nega vely affect the communi es who should have a be er future through access to safe water. The event programme included various entertainment items and a hot meal to close off the formal programme.

The crowd enjoyed the variety of local groups that provided entertainment during the programme.

Developing junior engineers Calvin College this week hosted the Junior Engineers for Africa (JEFA) workshops for grades 0 - 8. The program uses technical Lego blocks to teach engineering principles and robotics. These workshops aim at developing learners’ full potential through problem solving activities and learning-by-doing. For the smaller children workshops are story based. (The group photographed constructed houses and cars amongst other things). The level of difficultiy is adapted according to different age groups of learners. These include development

of independent thinking, spatial and technical skills, concepts and problem solving. Learners enjoyed participating in these workshops and many did not even realise they were learning important skills through play.
