‘They do have passports’

Mr Matthew Cobbet, a citrus farmer near Ohrigstad says he is of the opinion that a Police raid on his farm two weeks ago to arrest illegal immigrants was a political stint just before the local government elections. Mr Cobbet told Platinum Gazette, who published an article on page 2 of Platinum Gazette of 20 May 2011 (Operation NOKO), that the more than 100 foreigners working on his farm were not illegal immigrants as they are all in posession of valid passports and are lawfully in the country. Mr Cobbet says that his farm usually applies for a corporate permit, which allows his business to employ up to 500 foreign nationals at a time for a specific purpose. He told the newspaper that because of technical issues, this permit was not in place by the time of the raid. He said that he had taken this issue up with the immigration authorities prior to the raid on his farm and was engaging with them to find a solution to the problem and to renew

the coprorate permit. By the Wednesday before the raid these problems could still not be resolved and according to Mr Cobbet, upon enquiry what to do if his farm is raided they told him in Polokwane “tell the foreigners to hide in the bushes”. Mr Cobbet said to him the proposal was not acceptable. “Those people are still in custody, while they have valid passports, they are not illegally in the country. I have received a R157 000 fine from the authorities for having them on my farm and employing them. I will not pay this fine, I am not guilty of anything, I played open cards with the authories all the way. This is a scam, if the issue ever lands in court, I will fight it” Mr Cobbet said. Mr Cobbet said the weekend of the arrests the Police even approached him to assist with supplying food to those arrested as “the cooks” were not available.

Spekboom River Estate’s first houses shown Spekboom River Estate’s first houses were shown to mining companies and the public last week. The estate is 520ha where a significant part of the estate has been left as ‘nature’s own’, meaning that only 40% of the demarcated area is being developed. The balance, which includes greenbelts throughout the development, is being left as nature intended. The development process started eight years ago and today the first houses are ready for buyers to move in. One of the major advantages of the estate is the school development which is underway. Construction of the school will begin in a few months and the first intake of learners will be at the beginning of 2012. The lack of schools in the area was one of the issues Cranbrook Property Projects who are developing the estate, identified as an urgent need. The school will be open to residents from outside the estate as well. A shopping mall is also in the pipeline for the area. All the services are installed and the first residents will be moving into their homes on the estate soon. Stand sizes vary between 500m2 and 9 000m2 and stand prices start at R285 000. At the function where the first houses were show cased Cranbrook CEO Hoffman Prinsloo thanked everyone for all their hard work and invited the public to come and experience for themselves what is happening at Spekboom River Estates. Jak de Priester by Winterveld Klub Jak de Priester het verlede week Vrydagaand by Winterveld Klub in Steelpoort opgetree.

New councillors, more opposition. What will happen? Last week the national local municipal elections took place and many promises were made by various political parties. Locally the ANC still has the majority of seats in Council, but Greater Tubatse Municipality has the strongest opposition representation in years. We asked readers whether they think this opposition and the new ANC candidates will make a difference in service delivery and where they must start working.

Ms Angie Maishoane said: “Now that they are in council they must focus on service delivery not their personal clashes or organisational differences. They must ensure service delivery of water, electricity and sanitation”. With her is Mr Lazarus Tau.

Mnr Tom Bronkhost sê: “Nuwe besems vee altyd skoon. Hulle verval elke keer in dieselfde groef. As die opposisie meer druk uitoefen sal ons dalk ‘n verbetering sien. Hulle moet by die paaie begin en na behuising kyk. Daar is so baie goed wat aandag nodig het”. By hom is Tommie.

Me. Mense moet net positief wees. Die ANC, DA of watter party ookal regeer moet net weet die land behoort aan die Here en almal moet dit so aanvaar”. By haar is Daniël.

Mr Comfort Mkansie and Mr Peniel Marule said: “It is going to make a difference. The opposition wants to prove a point to us as a community. Even if they are few, they won’t allow the ANC to do as they want. Competition is good. They must prioritise rural areas. People who don’t have water, electricity, roads. The previous guys did nothing. They must look after the ma-goggas who were crying on TV before the election”.

Ms Mahlatse Makofane and Mr Jeff Motswiane said: “If the ANC will have opposition they will be working. Opposition is so powerful. They must look at the roads. The Praktiseer road is bad. They must start there”.

Mr Rushi Nyathi (middle) and Mr Eric Ngele (right) said: “No, more opposition will make no difference. You go there, you are hungry, they give you money and then you care only for yourself - no matter if you are from the DA, ANC, Cope or PAC”. Mr Ernest Baloyi (left) said: “I think they will do better because they want to prove that they can deliver on their promises. They don’t want any more strikes and they want to be better than the ones before”. They all agree that water must be a priority. “The pipeline is coming from De Hoop, but we don’t think it will make a difference. There is also not enough facilities in Burgersfort. When you go to town there is always queues. You queue in ABSA, you queue at Pick n Pay, you queue at the taxi”.

Ms. Damaries Malehodi and Ms Susan Louw said: “These candidates will be better than before. It will be an improvement to have opposition. They must start with electricity, roads and water supply”.

Mnr. Carl Lourens sê: “Dit gaan ‘n verskil maak. ‘n Sterkter opposisie is ‘n beter demokrasie. Dit hou die regering op hulle tone. Nou is daar mense wat kan kyk dat ouens met portefeuljes hul werk doen. Goed soos parke en sypaadjies sal nou dalk beter onderhou word. Hulle moet kyk na korrupsie want dan sal die finansies regkom. Dit is ‘n krisis op die oomblik. Die dorp moet skoon en netjies kom dat mense hier wil bly”.
