ANA or not?

The Annual National Assessments (ANA) are standardised national assessments for languages and mathematics in the senior phase (grades 7 - 9), intermediate phase (grades 4 – 6) and in literacy and numeracy for the foundation phase (grades 1 – 3). The question papers and marking memoranda (exemplars) are supplied by the national Department of Basic Education and the schools manage the conduct of the tests as well as the marking and internal moderation. This year the ANA did not take place as planned because of a dispute between ther majority of teachers’ unions and the Department of Basic Education, which resulted in the tests been postponened. While most schools are wrapping up their year with Christmas plays and prize givings, the Department is adamant that the ANA tests still has to be written before 4 December (next week), while the the unions are basically flat ignoring the government. Before going to press it could not be determined if the schools in our area are heeding the call to conduct the tests. Taps run dry Burgersfort residents had to cope another week with dry taps. Most residents in the high lying areas were without water since Sunday. By the time of going to print on Thursday 26 November the water had not been restored to all areas. According to Lepelle Northern Water the low levels in the reservoir was caused by a breakdown they’ve experienced on the mainline.“The Local Municipality has build stalls on top of our bulk pipe and it took long to be repaired,” explained Lepelle’s spokesman. Apparently they did point out the lines before construction of the stalls began. To repair the line an excavator had to dig up the foundations of some of the stalls. The break in the main line was also not reported immediately with members of the public phoning the newspaper to get Lepelle’s number to report the streams of water running down Dirk Winterbach Street. Ironically many local municipality employees also crossed the running water on their way to work for a few days. The Lepelle Northern Water team worked through the night on Tuesday to repair the main line. Once the repairs were done a problem with electricity supply from Eskom prevented the Lepelle team from pumping water. This was repaired by Wednesday evening. resulting in the reservoirs slowly filling up through the night. Anyone can report a leak or a pipe burst on a sidewalk to Lepelle Northern Water on 082 900 4449. (Photographs: Leani Havenga)

Do you trust the President? The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation this week released a report stating that President Jacob Zuma’s popularity is at its lowest levels since he became president. Their research found that white and Indian South Africans were the most critical while his support base is still fairly firm in the rural areas of South Africa. The Institute interviewed 2400 people and concluded that public distrust in the president currently stands at 66% compared to 37% in 2011. The ANC’s spokesman, Keith Khoza told the media that they will not comment on the report as such surveys “fluctuates and the outcome of a survey is not fixed”. Platinum Gazette asked readers whether they trust the President and why they gave their specific answers. Ms Provia Makofane said: “No, I don’t trust him. He is not a good leader because he does not take people serious. His actions are the problem. The ANC should definitely choose someone else to lead us”. Mnr.

Mr Bheki Dludlu said: “For the past 21 years we’ve had only 1 good leader – Nelson Mandela. Education build someone and I think that Zuma lacks that. I think Zuma thinks more about the ANC as an organization than about the people they are supposed to serve. I don’t think we can trust him. They should change the top structure. The man with the vision is gone. We have to change”.

Mr Vincent Thabalala and Mr Timothy Maebela said: “We don’t trust Zuma, but we do trust the ANC. Zuma is the problem. Nkandla is one of the problems. He is leading this country like a village chief with many wifes. In that sense he is stealing from government. All those wifes have to get an allowance to support them and it is not right that the public has to pay. They must appoint someone else. It is time to move on”. Ms Thari Maboko said: “I don’t really trust him. I think he lacks leadership skills. I think his reputation also affects him as a leader”. With her is Meladi.

Mr SJ Mphahlele and Mr Thomas Maelebe said: “That man is trouble – honestly. Look at the general service delivery in the rural and urban areas. Compare everything with the era of Mbeki and you will see. Everyone who belongs to the Zuma clan is also rich. Look at the public servants. They have extremely low salaries and salary increases while his salary just go up. It is not the ANC that we don’t trust – only Zuma and his people. We need an ethical president like Cyril Ramaphosa who is tough and has good standing in the public”.

Left: Mr Solomon Ndlovu said: “Yes, he is a good leader and I trust him. He tries to help Me. Charlotte Clarke sê: “Nee, ek people by givvertrou hom nie. Hy gebruik ons ing them RDP hard verdiende tax geld vir selfgewin houses”. en dan lag hy daaroor”.

Mr Theo Jona and Mr Zitha Vundla said: “As a person Zuma is intelligent. We know that. In terms of his administration there is no trust. The weakest point is that there is no coordination in his team. Nobody takes responsibility. You have to ask who is running the country? The president or is the country running itself? If we were President Jacob Zuma we would have just said: “Look, we know there was access with the renovations Mr Rassie Monareng said: “No, I and building of Nkandla. We are looking into how don’t think I can trust him. As you much I have to pay back. Instead he gave other can see there is no water, people parties a chance to play with him. He should have live in shacks and there are no prop- manned up and taken responsibility, but now he er roads. The hospitals are not good. can’t do that any more. He gave them ammuniEverything that is ok was established tion”. during Mandela’s time”. With him is Tshiamo.

Ms Kgothatso Morokong and Ms Patricia Mohlala said: “Yes, we trust him 100%. He is a good leader. We trust the ANC and they will not appoint him as president if he was not good”.

Mr MJ Moime said: “Yes, I trust the president. The president is not working alone. He has ministers. They are working as a collective. They are all accountable”.

Mnr. Sello Mopane sê: “Nee, hoekom moet ons hom trust? Hy doen niks vir niemand nie. Hy trou baie vroue terwyl hy ander kon gehelp het om goed soos skole te kry. Sy regering werk nie.

Mr Solly Nkhoma said: “People don’t trust him like before. They should change the top leaders to fix this. I think corruption and Nkandla is causing people to not trust him. Students are also protesting – that has never happened before to this scale. People are tired of empty promise while they build Nkandla and buy planes. Look at Burgersfort. Sometimes we don’t have water for a whole week – like this week!”

Ms Carol Lingwati and Mr Vusi Lingwati said: “We don’t associate with politics. We only trust God”. With them is Busi.

LInks: Mnr.

Mr Simon Masinga said: “Ja, I must trust him. The problem is that he makes false promises. They said they will deliver free education but they’ve failed. If they constantly fail Zuma should resign with immediate effect”.

Solid Isuzu

9

Isuzu can trace its heritage back to 1972 with the launch of its first one-tonner albeit badged as a Chevrolet LUV. Local production began in Port Elizabeth in 1972 and in 1977 the automaker’s first diesel model made its debut. In 1979 the range was expanded to include the brand’s 4x4 variants which coincided with the adoption of Isuzu KB branding. The first model change for KB took place in 1989 (third generation). From then the brand upgraded it offerings at regular intervals up to where we are today with Isuzu, the most diesel of bakkie brands. They don’t do much else: trucks and bakkies and they are also the world’s biggest diesel engine builders. You’d expect much, and yes the new Isuzu KB fulfills these expectations. Platinum Gazette drove the KB 250 double cab 4 x 2 high rider in fleetside trim from Westvaal Steelpoort this week. Mechanically variable geometry boosting for this 2.5-litre D-TEQ makes for outputs of 100kW/320Nm. More than enough for leisurely cruising at the speed limit on tar, where the bakkie lives surprisingly quiet on a rough surface with subdued noise levels, an excellent manual air conditioner and a radio/cd player. And then we hit the dirt. Surprise hit us. This is the most solid and comfortable bakkie we encountered so far (even between other Isuzus, which is famous for their car like ride on gravel). Not a squeak, rattle, groan or bump. Quiet, comfortable, very, very solid. You can work with this one. Not the grandest offering from Isuzu, but hugely competent as a bakkie that can work very hard without breaking the driver and double as as a family vehicle if needed. The back seat passengers will have enough space with the bonus of a folding back seat to create a carnivorous luggage area if you need it. While we don’t think the bakkie manages to fit into the lifestyle vehicle segment as easily as some of it’s competitors, that is not what this bakkie is about. The Isuzu carries on its rugged nation-building reputation with a model that is solid, bold and ready to be put to work. Westvaal Steelpoort says you can have one for R328 000 (enquire about the R20 000 cash-back option). The telephone number is 013 230 9519.
