Last Saturday saw a festive atmosphere taking hold of Monsterlus when people in Sekhukhune District Municipality converged in the Hlogotlou Stadium to witness the joint inauguration of the Sekhukhune District’s mayors. The large crowd was entertained by various cultural groups as well as other artists and entertainers, such as King Monada and all time gospel favourite Winnie Mashaba. The fierce sun did not dampen enthusiasm in the stadium and even a motorcycleclub roared in after doing some charity work at nearby Bosele School for the Blind and Deaf.

Multiple vehicle accident on R555 On Tuesday this week a SASSA truck hit a bakkie when trying to avoid a vehicle waiting to turn into Die Watergat from the R555. It appeared as if the driver of the truck did not see the car there, and avoided it by swerving past it - and hitting a bakkie. The accident happened around 11:00 in the morning. A bakkie travelling behind the vehicle hit by the truck also swerved to avoid the accident. This saw him leaving the road and crashing right through Die Watergat signage next to the road. The signage prevented his vehicle from going further down the slope next to the road. Traffic on the R555 between Burgersfort and Steelpoort slowed down a little while the accident scene was being cleared. One person was injured and taken to hospital by ambulance. Local farmers struggle without water At Makgalane Village near Leboeng a project estimated at R380 000 which was intended to assist farmers in the drought is not operational. A stand with a water tank on top and a trough were constructed, but no water is being pumped to either. Animals are collapsing and farmers had been making plans to try and the get the animals back on their feet or transported to where they can be assisted. In some cases scaffolding had to be constructed around the animals to try and hoist them up. It is estimated that in this village alone approximately 25 cows had died from the drought already. The farmers are hoping for speedy assistance from authorities to prevent any further animals from dying in the drought. Information & photographs: Robert Mahubedu.
Calling all local musicians If you are a local music artist you need to attend the gathering of local artists on 30 October 2016 at the Old Municipal Building in Burgersfort at 10:00 in the morning. Artists from Fetakgomo-Greater Tubatse Municipality from all genres are welcome. The objective of the meeting is to identify the artists and those who need assistance. The idea is to team-up and seek assistance from businesses with the development of these artists. A single with all the artists will also be recorded in 2017. The initiative is led by Mr. Douglas Mabok-
wane (member of Respa Voice music band), in conjuction with Mr Jeff Mashaba (reggae musician and producer), Mr Patrick Riba (also a reggae musician and producer) and DJ Sammy (producer and music conductor). The organisers are also in search of sponsors who can assist with developing the local artists. For more information contact: Douglas Mabokwane (076 095 2086); Mr Jeff Mashaba (071 170 9899); Mr Samuel Molobela (082 750 5670) or Mr Patrick Riba (079 024 7539).

Annual Samancor ECM Golf Day The Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines golf day is a big event on the social calendar of the Lydenburg/Steelpoort communities. This event is hosted annually to raise funds for community projects of which beneficiaries are identified from different communities. These projects includes the hand out of back packs filled with stationary to approximately 400 learners,
food hampers for the less privilege, etc. It always remains an incredible feeling to see the joy on the faces of little children when they receive these gifts. This year we had an exceptional response from businesses/companies in the area that participated and made generous donations. We would like to thank the following companies for making this day ‘n huge success: Lydenburg Toyota, Atlas Copco, Tyre Corporation, Remax, Zizwe, Gogola, Minprotech, AQS, Nomakanjani, Sylvania, SHS, Macdonalds Transport, Ngululu Bulk Carriers, Cranbrook, Tim Marobane. What made this event even more prestigious was the presence of past and current South African sport stars. Fanie de Villiers (AKA Vinnige Fanie - Ex Protea opening bowler), Danie Gerber (Ex Springbok centre) and Kwagga Smith (Current Springbok 7’s star). The evening was concluded with a question and answer session where fans were entertained. Congratulations to the following winners: Steve Piek and William Smart (1st); Lohann vd Merwe and Arthur Steynfaart (second) and Kobus Rademeyer & Desmond Clayton (third). (Photographs & Information: Mariska Stickling, Samancor ECM) Photographs left from top to bottom: Steve Piek, Fanie de Villiers and William Smart – the day’s winners.

Platinum Gazette celebrated the newspaper’s birthday this week, and the years past do not really matter, except that we are immensely grateful for all the support received from readers and advertisers through difficult and less difficult times. The newspaper had it’s beginnings in a recession and a difficult economic climate is in full swing again. We are thankful for all the grace we receive and take particular note of the verse above when we look at the future - Platinum Gazette team (both of us).
