Local papers exel at MDDA / Sanlam Local Media Awards Last week Friday the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) and Sanlam joined forces again to celebrate excellence in the local media industry of South Africa. The MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards 2012 included the inaugural Rantho/Letsebe Community Media Achievement Award and was presented at a gala dinner at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel in Durban. The Awards Gala Dinner was attended by the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Obed Bapela, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications, Skhumbuzo Eric Kholwane, captains of the industry and over 300 editors, journalists, photographers and broadcasters from all provinces. The MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards bring together the more than 22 years of Sanlam Community Newspaper Awards and four years of SABC News/MDDA Community Media Awards) into one big event - the MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards in the best interest of developing grassroots/local media talent, celebrating and promoting excellence. The Awards are based on the acknowledgement of the different types of local media operating at grassroots: Community Media - in terms of the MDDA Act means any media project that is owned and controlled by a community where any financial surplus generated is reinvested in the media project; and “community” means a geographically founded community or any group of persons or sector of the public having a specific ascertainable common interest; Small Commercial Media (SMME) - in terms of the MDDA Act means independent media enterprises or initiatives that are run for personal gain as micro, very small or small businesses as classified in the National Small Business Act, 1996 (Act No. 102 of 1996). And Corporate owned local newspapers and magazines - which is locally distributed media by corporate media owners like Caxton, Media 24, Independent Newspapers, etc.

This partnership between the MDDA, Sanlam and industry associations is a milestone in the pursuit of developing and promoting media diversity, and the celebration of excellence in the local media sector. This year, some 509 community and small commercial newspapers, corporate owned local newspapers and community radio stations from across the country as well as one from Namibia participated. No fewer than 921 individual entries in the typography, writing, photography and 79 entries for the radio categories (Best Community Radio Station, Broadcasting in Indigenous Languages, In-depth News Coverage and Current Affairs, and in Investigative Journalism) were judged. More than 213 photographs and over 79 radio programmes were also assessed individually. This makes the competition the largest of the many community/grassroots competitions held in South Africa annually. Platinum Gazette also entered the competition and exelled in the photogrpahy contest where editor William Zwart scooped the first place in the category for portrait (faces) photography. Rival newspaper, Steelburger / Lydenburg News, scooped the prize for the best front page in the free newspapers category (our congratulations to them - Editor). “Local newspapers in the Mashishing, Burgersfort and Steelpoort areas are not lightweights and face in many instances much more complicated challenges than other newspapers. Nevertheless we have been measured by the industry and found worthy of our readers” commented Mr Zwart after the awards.

Foreign students visit Dwarsrivier Mine On 21 May, 25 students from 14 different countries around the world studying MSc Metals & Energy at the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College, London, and 3 professors visited Dwarsrivier Mine. The visit was hosted by Dwarsrivier Geologist, Christopher Letsoele, and the students spent the day underground after which they returned to Johannesburg and the UK. Professor Dennis Buchanan, who arranged this excursion, was thrilled that Mr Mthi Mtshengu, acting Senior General Manager, gave his approval for an underground visit because he had not been able to secure this with their other hosts. Professor Buchanan brought a previous MSc group shortly after Dwarsrivier Mine started up and said for him personally it would be of real professional interest to see how the operation had evolved since his last visit. Everyone was very impressed with the way Dwarsrivier Mine had progressed.

‘The Spear’: What do you think about it? A painting depicting President Jacob Zuma with his private parts exposed caused lots of controversy over the last week. The painting, titled The Spear, was painted by Cape Town artist Brett Murray and was displayed at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg. During the week three people were arrested after they painted over the painting with red and black paint as well as painting a wall outside the gallery. By the time of going to press court proceedings in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg were in motion to decide whether the painting must be removed from the gallery and whether City Press newspaper should remove a photograph of the painting from its website. We asked readers what they thought about the issue. Mr Chama Mwila and Mr Aaron Siwale said: “It is wrong to do art like that. If it was his parent, would he have done the same? Would you be happy to see your father portrayed like that? He should have drawn Zuma with a suit. Why not draw Nelson Mandela or Thabo Mbeki like that? He is really abusing freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is a good thing, but it also need some discretion in the manner it is expressed. It is good, but at times it can be deadly”.

Mr Montoane Kgwete said: “It is really disgraceful. Because Jacob Zuma, besides being the President is a human being. How can the artist do something like that to the president? Will he paint his own mother or father in that fashion? I really doubt that. It is abuse of freedom of expression. It has gone too far”.

Mr Silas Maebana said: “I think they must not do this. It is not right to show someone’s private parts. They must respect the President. Zuma should sue that artist to show people they should not do it again. Young children will now disrespect him when they see him”.

? Ms Mahlatse Mashile said: “It is insulting. It is a big insult for the President”.

Left: One reader (his name is known to Platinum Gazette) who says he is a paid-up member of the ANC and cannot openly express what he feels without being victimized said: “I don’t think it is disrespectful. It is art. If you judge the President by his conduct he deserves it”.

Me. Jackie Pretorius en Mnr. Gideon Els sê: “Dit is ‘n mens se eie privaatheid en dit behoort nie so geskend te word nie. As mense hul net by hul eie dinge kan bepaal sal dit baie beter gaan”.

Ms Mmabatho Moela said: “It is fine to express our feelings but at the same time we need to know when to respect someone else’s feelings. What has been painted has been said before, why bring it up again? From a religious point for me it is wrong. We may not always feel Zuma is doing things right, but think of his families - wifes, children and grandchildren. It is invading his privacy. It is not like we are happy that he acted like he did in the past, but why bring it up again? It is also not only South Africans that are affected. Imagine what is going on about this in the press in other countries? South Africa will be tainted. Imagine if you one day want to go to a country like Sweden and you get there and they say: ‘Oh, you are from that country with that president that was painted with his private parts outside his pants”.

Mnr.

Mr Donald Selala and Mr Phineas Mashabela said: “We think it is a public gallery and there should be freedom of expression for the artist. It is someone’s choice to go and see the painting. From the other side it is bad for the President because he is politically connected. Personally we think it is wrong to display it”.

Left: Mr Thomas Mabaso said: “I’m a man. I don’t want to see a naked man - and I say it not just because it is the President in the painting. It should not be part of art or anything. Even in the garden of Eden it became a disgrace for Adam and Eve to be naked after they ate of the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge”. Right: Mr Justice Mohale said: “I think it is disrespectful. Drawing the private parts of someone. It does not show respect, despite his character Zuma is still the leader of the country”.

Above: Mr Jonas Strike said: “It is not our culture. It is just embrarrasing. You can’t be a leader if you are just a snakehead. It is disgusting”.

SPORT Chrome Open champion crowned The Chrome Golf Club hosted the Chrome Open on 20 May. Justice Mashego from Pilgrims Rest was crowned the champion after a very grueling 36 hole competition. Players from various clubs, including Lydenburg, came to compete in the competition. They were welcomed to a very well groomed course that was found

very challenging by some players. The play started very early Sunday morning and the last four ball ended just as the darkness fell, almost preventing the players from finishing the course. This would have been sad as the winner for the day came from this group of players. The competition will be granted ranking status in 2013. Players on the amateur golfing tour in South Africa will then be able to get points if they compete in this open. Chrome Golf Club would like to thank all the players that competed in this great day. Results: Open Champion Gross: 1 - Justice Mashego 155; 2 - Obet Mashego 156; Gerald Joubert 162. Winners - Nett: 1 - Tim Marobane 141; 2 - Ben smit 147; 3 - David Digoro 149.
