Dwarsrivier Mine and Community’s Olive Tree Project on track The Kalkfontein community is still set to benefit from an Olive Tree Project initiated by Dwarsrivier Mine in 2009. On Monday this week a Farmers Information Day was held at Kalkfontein to assist the Olive Tree farmers in their efforts. The Department of Agriculture and other stakeholders attended the session. The presentation focused on the various aspects of olive tree farming such as
cultivars, temperature requirements, soil ph, watering and fertilising, as well as the possibilities with the harvest from olive trees. The Kalkfontein community received the land after a successful land claim. A company was established to farm on the land and with the assistance of Dwarsrivier Mine 15 000 olive trees were planted. The first harvest is expected within the next two years. Mr Pius Monyela (right) from Dwarsrivier Mine told the group that the Mine believes that this project could still means millions to the community. He encouraged them to keep looking after the project and eventually reap the rewards. After the presentation and other formalities a visit was paid to the trees. During a question and answering session challenges were addressed and advice given.
