Mines’ offices burn
© Platinum Gazette
30 November 2012
Wednesday morning saw quite a chaotic traffic situation on the tarred road between Kalkfontein and the Dwarsrivier Pass on the so-called Sekhukhune Road as the Police, mine security and mine management proceeded to get the situation under control at Mototolo Platinum Mine. Platinum Gazette accidently stumbled on the huge traffic jam at the T-junction to Mototolo next to Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine. The newspaper’s reporter was on his way to attend an Aids Day celebration in the vicinity when it became clear that he was going nowhere. Quick questions to a number of people next to the road made it clear that something happened at Mototolo Platinum Mine, but no details were available. A company spokesman made it clear that a formal statement about what happened would not be issued, but it transpired from various other sources that the centralised management offices for the Xstrata managed chrome and platinum mines were apparently petrol bombed at about 04:00 on Wednesday morning. This happened from the veldt where the bombers could not be seen by security personnel. A Toyota Quantum bus was also burned at the entrance to Helena Mine. The traffic jam at the T-junction happened at about 07:00 when employees at various mines in the vicinity could not reach their respective workplaces as the situation at Mototolo was not fully cleared up. As far as could be determined, community members of Moletsi village in the vicinity of the mine have certain grievances against the mines and they allegedly also protested at the scene. Apparently no employees took part in the fracas. It proved to be difficult to gelt hold of the Moletsi group before going to press as more than a hundred individuals have been arrested for what happened at the mine. The details of their grievances was not known when the newspaper went to press, but the situation in the vicinity of the mine seemed to be peaceful and production was resumed.

Fun in the sun, but remember safety this season Samancor Eastern Chrome employees celebrated the end of the year in style with a braai and music bash in November. Everyone received drinks and food and local DJ’s and artists such as the Professor entertained them. The event was opened with prayer and afterwards ECM general manager, Mr Emile Brits wished the employees a safe Christmas time. He thanked them for their hard work during the year and the valued relationship that exist between the employer
and employees. He encouraged them to keep up the good work during the last few weeks before the festive season. This was the first year that ECM’s employees all celebrated their year end function together and the idea is to make this a tradition. The day’s heat did not influence the party mood and soon everyone was dancing, having a drink or preparing their braai. ECM’s management wishes all employees a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
ECM makes training history Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines made training history when the new Mines Rescue Services Steelpoort Station opened on land owned by ECM. This station will be able to conduct training sessions with emergency response teams in a true mine environment as part of the station includes an old mine shaft that goes deep into the mountain. It is the first training station in South Africa that will make use of a real mine. This will not only ensure realistic training of a high stan-
dard, but it will also provide it close to home. Previously teams going for training had to travel far. ECM general manager, Mr Emile Brits said that this is part of ECM’s commitment towards safety and development. The station opened at the end of July this year.

An investment in skills upliftment The Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines Engineering Training Centre was officially opened by the General Manager Mr Emile Britz on 18 October 2012 by the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the occasion. The opening of the training centre has been necessitated by the accreditation requirements set by the Mining industries SETA namely the Mine Qualifications Authority (MQA). Eastern Chrome Mines has achieved full accreditation status for engineering “On the Job” training phases on 12 November 2010 for egineering disciplines namely Electrical, Boilermaking, Fitting and Diesel Mechanic. The training centre has been equipped with up to date and modern equipment to deal with the challenges of on the job training for Operatives and Learnerships. It will also be used to develop portable skills of mine employees. The facility has now embarked on training members of the community within the Samancor Socio Economic area on practical novice Engineering Skills and short courses consisting of basic Electricity, Fitting and Boilermaking. These courses will assist to identify learners for future Learnerships and possible employment with Samancor. This is a landmark achievement for ECM and will assist in developing a more skilled person who is better equipped to find employment.

Platinum job losses looming in 2013? Profits had fell in the face of soaring costs and a weak demand for platinum used to build emissions-capping catalytic converters in cars
2013 is not looking as bright as most people would like it to be with possible job losses on the horizon. Especially the mining sector was hit hard with wildcat strikes during 2012. This week Anglo American Platimum (Amplats), a unit of the mining giant Anglo American said they’ve lost at least 191 000oz, worth over 300 million dollars at the current spot prices due to the strikes. They also said that their business review will be published early in the New Year. It is widely expected that this will lead to shaft closures and job cuts. The review could lead to further social tensions in the platinum sector’s areas of operation. Amplats spokesperson, Mpumi Sithole confirmed to the media that the review will be presented to the Amplats’ board in January and will be made public shortly after that. The strikes were not the only contributing factor towards possible job cuts. Before the wave of violent strikes, the company started reviewing its platinum operations. Profits had fell in the face of soaring costs and a weak demand for platinum used to build emissions-capping catalytic converters in cars. South Africa is home to about 80% of the world’s known platinum reserves. Due to the strikes reduced supplies of South African produced platinum lifted the metal’s price slightly. This could have a positive impact on profits and share prices of producers. The spot platinum price gained about 15% this year. Just before going to press the platinum price stood at $1604/oz.
