Still reeling after brutal murder

Gazette Strike update SAMWU requests minister to dissolve Council

People are still reeling from shock after Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Council Ward 5 councillor, Thabang Maupa (42) was killed around 19:30 on Monday in front of his shop at Riba Cross near Burgersfort next to the R37 road to Polokwane. The Police have launched a massive manhunt for an unknown assailant, who allegedly moved on foot, following the fatal shooting of the councillor. The deceased aged 42, allegedly arrived at his liquor shop after a meeting to assist his wife to close-up the shop. After closing, the couple was still in the car when an unknown suspect on foot, suddenly started firing shots at their vehicle. During this fatal attack, the deceased was hit several times and died on the scene. His wife aged 40, sustained injuries after she was also hit by stray bullets. The motive for the killing is unknown, although it is wildly speculated in the national media that there may be linkage between the murder and Councillor Maupa’s criticism of the involvement of the municipality in the VBS Mutual Bank saga. The Fekatkgomo Tubatse Municipality is reported to have lost about R230 million because of unlawful investment is this mutual bank. At this stage but police have opened cases of murder and attempted murder afterter the killing of Councillor Maupa and investigations are under way. The Police are offering a reward of up to R50 000 for any valuable information that can lead to the successful arrest and subsequent conviction of the suspect(s) responsible for these crimes. Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) is requested to contact Colonel Makhathini Ngele at 082 573 3645, Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line 32211 or the nearest police station.

The South African Municipal Workers Union in Burgersfort says the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality is dysfunctional and formally requested the national minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Zweli Mkhize, to dissolve the council. Dr Mkhize’s office acknowledged SAMWU’s communication with a pledge to give attention to the matter as soon as possible. Meanwhile residents are still struggling because of a lack of services while the strike by municipal employees continues. SAMWU says a decision that was taken on Wednesday to precautionary suspend the Director of Corporate Services is not good enough. They will only go back to work once the full suspension of the senior official has been effected because, according to the union, the appointment had been irregular in the first place. The dust in this crippling skirmish has not settled yet ...

Be warned Water is life and for some selling water is also putting the bread on their tables. The means how some of them are acquiring the water is however driving paying residents through the roof with frustration. “They simply come and open the fire hydrant next to Swallow’s Crest in Aloe Ridge

West. The moment they do that there is no water pressure or supply in our homes. They don’t pay for the water they collect to go and sell” one resident who forwarded the photograph to Platinum Gazette said. She added, “We have to pay for our water, but now our supply is hampered by these water vendors. We’ve complained with the municipality numerous times, but nothing is being done”. The Sekhukhune District Municipality responsible for water supply in the area responded to enquiries by Platinum Gazette. Mr Willy Mosoma said: “SDM regrets the illegal sourcing of water by water traders in Burgersfort town. In 2018 alone, two meetings were held with some of this illegal water users to notify them of the wrongfulness of their actions. During the two meetings SDM staff agreed with these people that they will stop their actions. It is unfortunate to learn that after our efforts, some are still continuing with the unauthorized action. The district municipality is now left with no choice but to involve the SAPS to assist in stopping this illegal action. We want to reiterate our point that water provision is a service that is paid for in town and we won’t tolerate illegal use of it. The Spekboom river is still dry and we are using boreholes and the Mooihoek scheme to supply the town. We have reached a critical point in as far as water source is concerned and illegal water use can not be tolerated. This is the last warning to perpetrators and failure to stop fetching water illegally in town will be punished“. The photograph (left) of the Spekboom River was taken on Tuesday this week. It is barely flowing in the prevailing drought conditions and smells more like a sewage plant than a fresh water river - a major concern for many residents.

Land use discussed with Magoši The investment of money in townships and rural communities and ensuring the building of post-apartheid cities in rural areas with vibrant businesses to generate jobs are of the key challenges facing government today. Much of this looks like an impossibility as far as the state of land use in a rural district like Sekhukhune is concerned. These are some of the sharply voiced inputs by traditional leaders representing 75 royal kraals of Sekhukhuneland who gathered at Moses Mabotha Civic Hall, Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality on Thursday 15 November 2018. The robust inputs made form part of consultative roadshows of the Limpopo Spatial Planning and Landuse Management Bill, 2018 (LSPLMB). Key among the issues raised is the neglect of spatial planning by government in particular municipalities after the 1994 democratic breakthrough when Bantustan structures were dismantled. Magoshi agreed that more

funding must be channelled to planning departments in local and district municipalities to resolve challenges of understaffing, and address the backlog in terms of the planning needs of traditional communities under Magoshi. Kgoshigadi Riba made an input on the Land Use Tribunal and how it’s going to be constituted and also concerns about some of the traditional leaders who might be affected by critical issues raised in the workshop. The workshop was concluded on a highly spirited note as Executive Mayor of Sekhukhune District Municipality, Cllr Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila assured Magoshi that more forums will be established to ensure the issues raised during the event are tackled and an accumulative progress report will be shared with traditional leaders throughout the process.
